What It's Like To Be In Solitary Confinement

Prison is far from pleasant, but things sink to an extra nasty level when prisoners are taken out of the yard and put into solitary confinement. Solitary confinement was originally a form of punishment practiced by Quakers and Calvinists who wanted to afford prisoners the quiet space to evaluate their actions, presumably while praying. Some religious sects, such as the Amish, still use forms of social isolation to punish offending members of their community, and it can wreck the psyche of those ostracized. Still, these practices don't hold a candle to the United States prison system, which takes solitary confinement to an inhumane level.

I’m not proud of it, but I’ve been to jail a few times (county jail no extended periods of time) and I’ve come to find that day rooms in pop actually create an outlet that’s necessary. I‘m fine being alone at home, but solitary for a week almost made me lose my mind. There’s only so much reading, so much thinking, so much sleeping, so many pushups you can do. It’s extremely humbling to be in that tiny box alone with no rec or interaction outside of guards who don’t talk to you, only talk at you

It’s not that bad at all. Most prisoners prefer it because the alternative is sharing a cell with a stranger who can be smelly, rude, noisy, weird, violent, crazy etc. THAT is what drives prisoners mad and leads to conflict, not “boo hoo I’m alone”. Prisoners are out of their cells everyday unless they don’t want to go. They’re socialising with other prisoners and staff everyday. Videos like these are just fabricated nonsense

Funnily enough though, prisoners have more camaraderie, social life, daily exercise, and structure than many people out in society who spend their days alone, miserable, working a job they hate (if they’re lucky) so they can buy stuff they don’t need.

I felt like I was in a nightmare lab experiment set up by a psychopathic graduate student intent on showing the most effective means of fucking with the natural circadian rhythm of a human being. They say they are there to "reform" your behavior, but even a fifth grader could see how the facilities are designed to disrupt and sabotage the health of inmates. Anyone who comes out the other side of these experiences as a "better man" did so very much only because he resisted every obstacle that was purposefully put in his way to hurdle him.

Solitary confinement would not affect me the same way that it would affect other people. I think that’s unfortunately because when I was a kid… My grandparents put me by myself in my room all the time so I was essentially in solitary confinement a lot. Before I was adopted by them, I was home by myself a lot as a very little kid. I think I have a greater threshold for it. It’s interesting seeing how much people hate solitary confinement. I’ve never been in an institution where I had solitary confinement so… who knows but I just don’t think it would affect me the same way.

You’re clueless because you’re probably a law abiding citizen more concerned with appearing nice than any real concerns. What purpose does “solitary” have to begin with? Prison is a punishment because a prisoner’s liberty is taken away by the judge/sheriff. I work in a prison (no, not in America) and most prisoners prefer to be alone. Prisoners get more time interacting, socialising and having fun with their friends than most law abiding citizens. Not to mention free food, free accommodation, no taxes, sweets, treats, visits, education (if they want it).

Hard to feel bad for people who have been convicted of killing in cold blood ( obviously not counting the unfortunately wrongly convicted- that's entirely different and horrific issue). Solitary confinment is a punishment too soft for them. Boo hoo. Speaking of wrongfully convicted people, Graves' story is horrifying. The justice system utterly failed him. The guy who testified was actually the killer?? No one suspected him? Then Graves wasnt let out another four years after being exonerated?? Good grief. Poor man. All that aside, yet another great video from you guys!

I was just locked up for the first time in my entire life. I know it's probably not 'legally advisable' for me to post information about this prior to my trial, but I don't really care. I only spent six days in solitary and here's a list of what I was allowed: Nothing. Not even the own clothes on my back were permitted and access to a toilet was forbidden from me for my "own protection." I wasn't in any kind of supermax facility--it was basic county-level jail. The room depicted in 1:15 is about twice the size of what I was given and I only left it for ten minutes during the entire six days for the purposes of two showers. The only thing contained in the 5x10 room was a hole where I was to relieve myself when necessary. In other words, I was thrown into a literal shithole. I did not see the sun the entire time I was behind "bars" (which may have been infinitely-dense concrete walls). It took less than a week for my waking life and dream life to blend together into indistinguishable blurs. When I closed my eyes, I would "see things" that I knew weren't there and were comparable to closed-eye visuals some may experience while under the influence of psychedelics. The worst part of the whole experience? Knowing that what got me in there (having an autistic meltdown) simultaneously makes tens of millions of other Americans vulnerable. No prior criminal history? Doesn't matter. No documented tendency towards violence? Didn't make a difference. Having a documented disability? Hell, they just used that as ammunition against me. If someone were to treat a dog in the manner I was treated, they would *rightfully* be convicted of animal abuse and thrown into a jail themselves (unless they had a badge, of course). Even prior to these events I had made up my mind to dedicate my life towards helping autistic people and their families. Now, any and every chance I get, I warn the more vulnerable populations of autistic individuals (just being a male, for example) that in the United States, cops are not your friend. They are not there to help you and they sure as fuck don't care about any disability you have. Were they intelligent enough to be able to sit down and understand the nuances of what someone completely different from them might have to deal with in their day-to-day life, they wouldn't have chosen law enforcement as a job. Not all officers are this way, of course. But all it takes is one wrong word said in the wrong way to the wrong officer at the wrong time, and suddenly that "Constitution" we Americans pretend to be so proud of is promptly thrown out the window and replaced with a pair of handcuffs and the barrel of a gun.

I’m a therapist for a prison. I’ve seen perfectly reasonable people get placed in confinement and come out changed for the worst. Some even experience psychosis when they never have before. Even if you’re not sentenced to solitary confinement, inmates can still be placed there for misbehavior while in prison. The messed up part is that correctional officers will put inmates in “the box” or “the hole” for fun even if the inmates weren’t misbehaving. I consider it on par with medieval torture. Senseless with little justification for it.

As an autistic man who found himself locked up in solitary because I said the wrong thing to the wrong cop on one of his "grumpy days," thank YOU for your service. I have no prior criminal history myself so winding up in this situation very much caught me off guard and in my "normal life" I am pursuing a career as a mental health professional. So not only do I have a great amount of respect for your line of work, I have an unfortunately great amount of perspective on just how important what your particular specialty is.

@@dantemoose420 If she is American, there is very little to no authority she is allowed to enact. For the most part, prison psychologists are used solely as a means of providing clearance to the individuals who find themselves in these environments because they are being "punished." Solitary is very often used as a means of having a place where the prison/jail staff can stuff in people with mental illnesses or disabilities into a box without ever having to take on any responsibility to treat them like proper human beings. Although I was prevented from seeing any other faces, the jail where I was housed was obviously constructed in such a way where sound would easily travel. Not a single individual who was put into one of these "soft rooms" didn't eventually break down into incoherent screaming. Some of them, perhaps prior to even being forced into those harsh circumstances, were legitimately suffering from delusional thinking and it was arguably in even their own best interest that they be separated from the general population. Yet categorically in every single case, treating them in this manner only made them worse and exacerbated their already frail state of mind. The "living" conditions were so poor that it was plain and obvious that they weren't harming these inmates out of neglect or stupidity, but out of sheer malice. They *wanted* these individuals to hurt and they had every intention of leaving scars. Nothing about what goes on in these facilities is reformatory and I do wish the video would have focused more on the fact that many, many times non-violent offenders who aren't even in prison will be thrown into these circumstances purely because some cop doesn't feel like "dealing with it."

She can only perceive what my senses do, she has a separate memory and i cannot read her thoughts, nor her mine. Anyway, I think a long solitary confinement would cause my brain to make more friends. I think over time we would all get on each others nerves. And then my mind would become utter chaos with a disassociated self to try to be away from their arguing and fighting. It is hard enough at times to keep the peace with 1 psybling following me around all day.

In general I'd say solitary confinement is cruel and unusual. However, there are some inmates who need to be locked up, away from other prisoners. We can't have them murdering other people while in prison. But I expect it's only a small proportion of prisoners. It sounds like the US sends people to the hole on very shaky grounds.

Now I am not going to say the punishment is not abused at times by the Authorities, but I will say you reap what you sow. When we have someone who is causing havoc in the prison system what do you want us to do with such a person put then on Time out?? The person is already being punished by being in jail. Sometimes these people are put in solitary in order to protect other prisoners. Even though I don't like the concept I do think it is necessary.
