I do find my esl kids switch up on you. They too speak English to me as the teacher and Spanish among themselves. But they are very helpful to me as the teacher. If they realize I know Spanish and don’t have to do the heavy lifting they are very enthusiastic. To help myself I pull out google translate or draw as esl learning is very visual and you gotta be very resourceful. Outside of English, for math I also use the app that lets you take a picture of it and solve it and shows you the steps. Then I copy it into google translate. It’s called like photomath

I was set up to sub here in Texas and then they shut it down due to recent events. I’m on hold. And This would have been my first week. I am an adult esl teacher as my hobby. I too am like you with my Spanish skills but I am Central American and wouldn’t call myself Afro Latina per se. so when I get around my student I too listen out for words which I discovered I know a lot more than I thought as we spoke Spanish at home when I was little but when I came to the states permanently I kept English outside the house. Funny thing is, I speak viet which I hope is an asset.
