    I love seeing you highlight the ladies in PM. It’s really refreshing and makes me feel I’ve found my people. The most difficult part of being a PM for me is leading with influence without authority. I’m responsible for leading the charge on a product but don’t officially manage the day to day tasks of those I work with. Asserting yourself in this way can be so intimidating when you’re new and/or (frankly) female. I’ve had to learn over the years to lean into my ability and right to say no and prepare myself to defend my reasons behind that no often.

    Hey Chloe! Love the transparency in all your content. As someone going into tech / product management out of college, one of the things I thought about a lot (and still grapple with) is ethics in tech. Especially since tech has disproportionately large impact on the rest of the world, I'm curious to know how others navigate the various ethical decisions they have to make throughout their career. Although they don't have control of everything, I feel like PMs have more power and responsibility than most to ensure integrity/ethics when it comes to their work. Do you think you could do a video where you interview some of your friends/mentors to speak on the topic? (e.g. which companies / products would people not want to work on? what do you do when someone suggests something unethical? how would a PM evaluate whether or not a feature, product, company, etc. is good or bad for society?)

  • @chloeshih

    @chloeshih

    2 жыл бұрын

    hiya timothy!! aww glad you enjoy the transparency! ethics is definitely a big question because there are lots of very "predatory" products out there. i know a lot of tech talent don't work at those companies because of a mismatch in values and ethics, but they're definitely hotly debated. those who do have unethical practices are usually those who are talked about and therefore have more visibility, which can be really helpful many times. i think there are a few components to your question: 1. what are your thoughts on joining a company with unethical practices? 2. what are your thoughts on product suggestions that have potentially unethical consequences? the first question is pretty straight-forward - it's mostly a values check. the second question is way more common. i used to work in trust and safety at tiktok, and we would tackle all the ethics questions. we had a digital wellbeing team that made sure we allow tiktok to have great content but not become overly addicted to it, hence why there's the pop up video that tells you to go to take a break when you swipe too long. i think this is a great topic you're bringing up! i may have some of those PMs on my future videos to talk about ethics!

    @@chloeshih Yay thank you so much for the thoughtful response! Definitely looking forward to more conversations out in the open, but of course everyone will have different values and perspectives. I would love to know how others have navigated conversations about ethics in the workplace, because my biggest fear is saying something is potentially unethical and then getting a target on my back for speaking up 💀 Thank you again for all your amazing content and love how you champion BIPOC people in tech!

    I agree with everything that you and your network said. 100%. (Not to mention I've noticed compared to my friends who are SWEs it takes a lot longer for you to get direct reports under you in PM roles so you sometimes feel like you're falling behind.) Generally, PMs have basically all the responsibility to piece everything together for a successful launch but none of the authority to demand results. I probably spend like 40%+ of my day negotiating different elements, arguing what is and is not MVP, when we or another team can deliver something by, etc. The remainder is literally spent looking at decks/documentation, creating documentation, or keeping an eye out to ensure my team doesn't get blindsided by a sudden change in another team's timeline, a sudden drop in prioritization, architecture shifts, etc. My mentor told me the role of a PM is basically you are like oil. You make sure everything runs smoothly and you fit yourself into every nook and cranny that is important.

  • @chloeshih

    @chloeshih

    2 жыл бұрын

    omg yesss!! it's so much harder for PMs to get promoted too and there's far less management positions. from the groups of professionals i've seen, most PMs are pretty qualified to go into management (vs the SWE masses tbh). i've had a lot of swe friends who went into management super early and it made me feel horrrribbbllleee. D: "arguing what is and what is not MVP" - literally story of my life LOL. it's like "is this a now thing or a later thing?" and that decision changes and it sucks xD if you know any mandarin at all, i think it's appropriate to say 加油 (add oil!)

  • @jason4584

    @jason4584

    @@chloeshih lol. No Mandarian for me. Though it's nice to hear about others who have the same struggles and validation. The other most important thing my mentor told me that she said separates really good pms from okay ones was: "There will be days when you will literally know nothing. It's okay to not know everything. Become comfortable not knowing everything (She told me a lot of people are terrified of taking ANY action because they aren't 100% confident and by the time they are the opportunity for action and value has passed). When those moments happen (and they will happen), just breathe, be fluid, and be willing to learn or find out the answer." I've been trucking along now for several years using this as my guide post and professional mantra for my pm career and its somehow works every time. Lol.

    Hi....was wondering which to pick so i did some research on the top most recognised certs. CSPO seems to be quite popular with employers on many job platforms. The Scrum Alliance certs are globally accepted. However you have to renew and upgrade after a couple years. So you might wanna go for others if you do not want this stress. My 2 cents.

    i think this is too hard to generalize - it was actually insanely stressful working at a startup as well. some people say 1 year at a startup is like 5 years at a big tech company. it truly depends on whether you're on a growth team that has high visibility and running on little resources. working on something 0->1 and having to prove impact within the same half is also very stressful. really depends on your project, visibility, manager, and how you've been onboarded or set up for success!

    Maybe fast paced, outsourced, B2B type sector such as software is the source of burnout. Slow paced, in-house, B2C type sector such as appliances aka white goods may offer much better work life balance for PMs. For example people in marketing agencies are complaining 80+ work hours but in-house marketers say that they are working 45 hours or less except product launch times or deadlines. I want to advance through product management. I think I should go for health, appliances or automotive rather than software, defense industry or FMCG in order to maintain better work life balance. What do you think Chloe? 🤔

    Not sure if you'll see this, but I need human, or a hypothetical older sibling figure to help me out haha. I've been researching for a while and its just awesome but stressing on how many careers there is to choose from. I'm 22 and basically took a gap year but only need a few classes left to graduate from community college with a Fine Arts degree. I want to study and be a graphic designer because I love designing and being creative, talking with people and solve problems. I can easily put myself into others shoes as well. But I'm afraid that once I graduate with graphic design, I wont be able to get a job right away or even get paid well enough. So I'm kinda turning towards business, specifically marketing and brand/product marketing or managing. Not sure if it's a good idea and I'm afraid of losing time AND money, with little benefits. I even considered nursing the first year of college, but I just feel like I dont belong there. Any comments are welcomed. I just want to talk or possibly vent to someone who'll understand or give their own strong and honest opinions. Thanks everyone who read! ♡
