it's been a minute bc ya girl accidentally shipped her memory card and lost a buncha footage for what was supposed to be the next video *_*
tysm for the immense support when i shared my latest career move. i learned a heck ton to negotiate what i want in my next role & this is my brain dump of the precise tactics i used. there's definitely a lot of nuance i couldn't cover, but i hope this is a good start for those of you who need an extra boost to figure out how to tactfully get the things you deserve. the next video is probably gonna be a vlog on my first week at discord as a pm or it may be about everything you need to know about pm interviews.
oh yes if you're seeing this on the first publish date, it's my birthday woo! come thru for a birthday happy hour on twitch this week (i'll put the details in an event in the discord server).

    Your strong sense of justice is admirable Chloe! I've seen your other video (re Tiktok) and I can relate with having values I don't want to be compromised. I've been through a lot of stress during my grad school days because of conflicting values, priorities, and expectations. Your story gives me hope that it'll also be possible for me to find a more fulfilling career (and progression) and be treated as someone who matters and brings value. Thank you! So glad you made this, Chloe! I find I have to convince my own PMs to negotiate their salaries because they are so. hesitant and I know it will negatively affect them later in their careers if they don't. There is such a strong confidence and knowledge gap between high and lower earners on the same team and that is not why people should have pay disparity. It should be based on their market value, skills and impact.

  • @chloeshih

    Ahh yeah it’s always such a trap. :( I’ve had recruiters hustle me hard and I honestly just say “I haven’t had a chance to think through the compensation piece, but I’m definitely looking for something very competitive.” Then boomerang the question back. If pushed again, I say “I don’t think sharing a number right now is a productive use of our time.” And then boomerang again. It’s okay if you have a lower number in the first call. During the offer stage, you should have a chance to push it back up!!

    These are some solid tactical tips! I've often heard or read about negotiating from a strategic angle, like what identifying what you're trying to achieve. But this is the first time I've heard the actual tactics of negotiating, which is very eye-opening. One thing I do wonder for myself, though, if these negotiation tactics also work at a traditional non-tech company. They may not be as familiar with these hardball tactics that tech candidates are used to at FAANG companies and just think that you're being rude. (But that might also be my internalizing of the stigma that Asians should just put our heads down and not make waves.)

  • @chloeshih

    @chloeshih

    I actually got most of the tactics from Never Split the Difference (Chris Voss)! His real-world examples were used to negotiate your rent, your salary (in law, consulting, or finance), and hostage situations (which I hope none of us have to experience). Unfortunately, I don't know anything about traditional companies, but nationwide numbers do say that 70% of managers do expect a negotiation conversation when talking about salary. More often than not, negotiating is expected, but we just didn't know. :/ Re: stigma that Asians should put our heads down - UGH I know. I felt horrible in my first few attempts to negotiate years ago. I felt so out of character and misaligned, but I had to have a bunch of people knock it in me that only I can own my compensation. It's truly a tough paradigm shift!

    Thanks for your great videos Chloe! I am a Product Manager in Germany and it is super interesting to know about your experience in the US! It would also be great if you could share with us your experience with the following topics: - How to build a Product Manager CV that reflects your achievents? Maybe you could share your CV with us? - How to tackle Product Manager position home tasks/challenges that companies share during the recruiting proces? Maybe some good resources and approaches you could share?

    Hi Chloe, amazing video! Can you make more videos about your career progression, like college onwards? Including any internships you did, the first job hunt, etc. Have you ever had to make the decision between worse role and big company vs. amazing role and smaller company? Currently facing that problem so would love to hear your opinions

    Hey Chloe! Thanks so much for your video, it was really insightful! I'm a fresh grad who just got a PM full-time offer (have done 1/2 PM internships prior). I did not negotiate because I felt that at my experience level it may not have been appropriate. Yet, I know the starting salary does lay the ground for the future. Curious to hear your thoughts on this!

    Hi Chloe!! Aww, I'm glad this has been really helpful for you. Also - congrats on getting the PM full-time offer!! So pumpppeeddd! It's all right if you didn't get a chance to negotiate. I think the next step is having a career conversation wtih your manager to talk about salary adjustment, equity refreshers, bonuses, and promotions. I'm gonna work on a video around this topic - it's been highly requested!! Stay tuned! :)

I have always wanted to negotiate but never had the confidence to and some of that has to stem because Im a person of color and never really had somebody that look like me to tell me "Ask!". I feel at my age and career level I need to be having these conversations.

    How do you get mentors? I find it so difficult to ask for help, and try and do things alone so as not to “bother anyone” but I realize that it isn’t serving me in life at all. This video is so helpful to me. I started my first tech role last year and was grossly underpaid, denied a signing bonus, brought in 4 levels below where people of similar experience and education were. I had no one in my life that worked in tech to ask what to expect. This video will help a lot of people transitioning into tech to advocate for themselves.

    Hey Chloe! Great video. I'm a big fan! I actually have a friend who knows you IRL from CKI in Socal. I was wondering if you had any tips on when you already gave them a number in the first interview? Also I think I would prefer negotiating over email, but I am afraid they'll take the offer away if I give such a high anchor number.

  • @chloeshih

    Ah this is complicated, but: 1. I normally find them organically (through work or friends of friends) 2. I chat with them with I have a very clear objective and I need their tactical advice on it 3. Once I go through the challenge, I execute on their advice immediately and let them know how it was for me and what the result was. Mentors really want to know if the time they invested in me has meant anything. 4. I try to keep strong values for the long-term game in my life and show gratitude to them even when they weren't there to directly coach me through a process. I think I keep my mentors and the advice they give me in a place where it has compounding effects that I can apply in other areas of my life. 5. I also randomly send them messages of things that remind me of them - like a podcast, a video, or meme, etc. These are just light-weight ways to engage with them without always asking for help.
