What It Means to Be a Moral Leader

Remember when leaders could sidestep taking a stand on sensitive political or societal issues by saying, “The business of business is business”? That aloof neutrality no longer works, says Dov Seidman, founder and chairman of The HOW Institute for Society. “I think the business of business is society,” he says. “It's community, and how we relate to whatever comes our way and how thoughtfully and principled we are.” A leader standing up for what’s right is the new expectation of employees, customers, and other stakeholders. Not to mention relatives at the Thanksgiving dinner table.
As AI ramps up and challenges humans’ monopoly on intelligence, purely human skills like moral judgment and empathy become even more crucial for leaders. While machines can be taught to do things right, Seidman says, only people can lead others to do the right things.
For this episode of our video series “The New World of Work”, HBR editor in chief Adi Ignatius sat down with Seidman, who’s also the author of How: Why How We Do Anything Means Everything, to discuss:
• How to let your principles guide you as a leader
• The importance of taking a pause in order to reflect on, reconnect with, rethink, and reimagine your mission
• Which human traits and abilities will grow in value as AI grows in raw intelligence
This interview part of a series called “The New World of Work,” which explores how top-tier executives see the future and how their companies are trying to set themselves up for success. Each week, Adi will interview a leader on LinkedIn Live - and then share an inside look at those conversations and solicit questions for future discussions in a newsletter just for HBR subscribers. I couldn't agree more on many of the things that has been said , but here i would like to point out the How?! as a contribution in this very important discussion if not the most important in our present era , It all begins in schools and educational institutes especially the early learning stages and even nurseries or day care centers. That alone should make it much easier to overcome humanitarian dilemmas along the way to live a meaningful life. As for the leadership role in the society or driving cultural changes for the better , i would like to point out that people holds a great power and a great responsibility towards that , we all know that politics is manipulative in a way or another even if its called "diplomacy" however, its the people who gives the power to those type of manipulative leaders then end up complaining about the outcome, therefore the public must be educated enough to chose the right leaders who will serve the common good based on humanitarian measures not based on a political ideology that serves only who's in favor to it. In my personal prediction i believe that the world will see that essential change within the next five years from now simply because people now are more politically sophisticated but it's just the beginning. As for the stick and the carrot strategy , leaders and followers should ask a very important question which is (What are the earnings or the profits for?) only then leaders can make wise decisions on whether that extra profit is truly needed or not! and that would be In order to improve or at least preserve good quality and deliver value to the society in general. I also believe that HBR and HBS would agree with me on that since wellbeing and personal growth has always been a subject in many discussions. By saying that , there are many live examples around the world that indicates the true successful and meaningful journeys some entrepreneurs had that led to their happiness and made everyone around them happy as well. Yet if it doesn't start at school and households humanity is going nowhere. Some people might criticize conservatives in the name or liberalism but the truth is those conservatives holds the highest values, and to those critics i say please stop confusing the public by making them think conservatism is equivalent to extremism. Because the truth is , moderate conservatives respects non-toxic liberty , i'm pretty sure you know what i mean. "Building a human being is the hardest construction but it's the true wealth" Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Finally i would like to thank you HBR as usual and i won't forget to mention HBS. Much Respect.

Stand and belief is subjective. This seems like you're saying that there should be more clashes between left and right resulting in a greater division in the society. Politics in past some yrs have created enough division. Society may fall apart if every segment jumps into politics.

Keep politics and religion (Leftist religion too) out of your business. Do whatever you want (legally) outside of work, but dont bring your beliefs into the business unless you want to deal with the fallout
