  • @ProjectManagementVideos

    Hi...I am away from my laptop now, but usually I would mean duplicate, copy or do the same. It is my opinion that managers should not do what the team is doing, but instead complement it by doing the tasks that the team doesn’t do as part of their role.

    @@ProjectManagementVideos I agree with your opinion. In my country Kenya, managers usually spend a lot of time either replicating roles of team members (usually by cherry picking the best tasks) or dishing out orders in the name of delagating. They leave very little time to enlighten team members on team/department objectives and how each member contributes to it. They definitely don't take the heat for colleagues even if its them who made unileteral decision. They single out someone to be the scapegoat. They don't monitor and evaluate progress and so training if its there its not by manager's recomendation. They are poor runners if they do it. They mostly try to go for meetings with senior management and do reports. They rarely communicate what was disccussed in the SMT meetings unless it was a bad report.

    As far as I'm concerned, my old manager failed her role and responsibility. She once asked *_me,_* not my fellow present coworkers, if the verbally announced instructions for the night made sense (after the task giver asked if there were any questions). I think it was because I was always a slow learner, who often struggled at work or needed clarification. I'm pretty sure her question to *_me_* wasn't random. Well, I don't care for her underestimation; it's cruel! One day, she asked if I knew where a certain item was. I said I didn’t know. She replied “you don’t know?” I said “I never know,” to passive-aggressively indicate how unknowledgeable I was. I think her response was a friendly “come on, John, you’re smart.” I said I wasn’t, to show how doubtful I was about my intellect. I might have added that I “never get it” or something? Either way, I showed her I felt unintelligent. She said she thought I was highly intelligent and very smart, and when I asked her why, she said I was a very hard worker. But that’s just it-I’m a banquet server. It’s not particularly academic or brainy. So...I think she was patronizing me. Being a hard worker doesn’t necessarily make you smart, if you want my opinion...especially if the job is casual, not scholarly or creative. That's why her smart comment really hurts my feelings. Do you think she looks down on my intellect, especially the night she asked if the instructions made sense?

  • @ProjectManagementVideos

    @ProjectManagementVideos

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi John...I don't know more than what you just explained to me. So, I'll share my 2 cents based on just this. When I visit restaurants or businesses where I need to engage with the servers, I always feel that the server makes all the difference in whether I have a good or bad experience. A smart person knows what to so or say in certain situations because they make better judgments about what's happening around them. We appreciate their actions. However, on the other hand, there is always a chance that your manager might be mixing up the terms and using "smart" instead of "effective" or whatever he/she meant. Either way, I wouldn't think too much of it. This is just work and a manager is a manager only while we are at work and their comments don't define us. Managers have their own inner doubts and insecurities and can sometimes project those onto others. I personally always try to look at the positive angle in every situation, I pat myself on the back instead of waiting for others to do it, and I let any negative comments I hear just roll off of me like I have Turtle Wax on. I avoid dwelling on anything that gives me negative energy and, instead, I will give higher priority to things that make me happier and more positive. Not sure if I helped. Would love to hear back from you.

    @@ProjectManagementVideos Well...the _truth_ is, I don't 100% believe in that whole "it doesn't matter what people think of you, only your own opinion matters" thing. Why? Well, let's say Joe Biden thought he was a wonderful and incredibly thoughtful president who is fit to lead (and think). There you go. Why would that matter? There are way more people, with greater minds than Grandpa Joe, who _don't_ think what he potentially does about himself. What you think about yourself can be just as wrong as what other people think of you; it could be the same boat. In some circumstances, you _are_ the flawed person everyone sees, and you just don't realize it. Politicians and celebrities are great examples. The more opinions about something could define its quality. Like, several people love the Harry Potter books, so maybe you can "factually" say it's a great series, even if that's technically an opinion. A person might say they don't like the books, but that doesn't change how many people love them. That's why it does matter to me what people think of my intellect. I admit it...I have a learning disability. But I don't want people to know, unless I fully trust them to respect it. Let's face it...it is _SO_ easy to look down on someone once you learn they have a LD. I don't want my old manager to know; I feel it in my guts she would think less of me, even if not intentionally or cruelly. Unknowingly could be problematic enough. I mean, I can't imagine her thinking--at least not consciously--that I'm stupid. BUT...let's say there was a word that pretty much means "stupid," but in a nicer, more realistic way, so that it's not necessarily an insult. A word that describes someone who often "doesn't get it" and is a slow learner, especially compared to many other people. I don't want my old manager to see me like that, because I don't want her to increasingly underestimate me: Mr. "Gee, I don't get it." It's cruel how imbeciles are portrayed as my type on TV, like Patrick Star and Homer Simpson. My brain just works differently and has comprehension limits.

    @@christinabarrett Well, thanks, but my boss has hurt me and things have gotten worse at work. See, I forgave the previous manager because she offered her help with an application (I'm in a long career process I'm afraid). But the higher-ranking manager--i.e., my boss--has belittled my skills worse than the other woman did. My boss doesn't seem to believe in my skills. She was upset I had signed up for a one-person shift. She scolded the manager below her rank (then 25) for not noticing I had signed up to go solo. When she asked him if she thought I could do the shift, I answered for him with a firm "yes," because I felt belittled by her. She said she didn't think so, was like, "I've told you not to sign up for shifts by yourself, I've been very clear about that, I don't know how much clearer I can get for you to listen," and she told me I need someone there to give me instructions and guide me. What's funny is my newer coworkers, who only started a year ago (same time my boss scolded me), are allowed to work shifts alone. Four years prior to that confrontation, and she had no faith in me. And it's my fault for two things: one, for not reporting it to the said previous manager (who is head of the dining department), and two, for not saying during the confrontation "But then we won't know what I'm capable of. You never know until you give it a try." It was a year ago at this point, but I still feel it matters. I'm leaving the job because my boss undermined my skills and confidence.
