The term gent or gentleman has become ubiquitous in magazines, blogs and on TV. Overall it is used for all kinds of men and it’s very hard to tell what the meaning actually is and what it entails.
The Original Gentleman
1. A man of high social status and wealth
2. A polite or formal way to refer to a man.
3. A man of noble birth or someone of a royal household.
4. A man of good social standing or a member of the House of Commons.
5. A man with a general good societal position.
We came up with 11 hallmarks of a gentleman today.
02:23 A gentleman is imperfect.
02:36 A gentleman has high standards.
02:48 A gentleman is well dressed.
03:08 A gentleman has good manners.
03:30 A gentleman is open minded.
03:54 A gentleman is interested and informed.
04:18 A gentleman’s actions match his words.
04:35 A gentleman treats people with respect.
04:56 A gentleman recognizes the difference between arrogance and confidence.
05:16 A gentleman wheels his power purposefully.
05:31 A gentleman gives the benefit of a doubt to other people.
Being a gentleman sets a very high bar and it's not a definitive thing. It’s a lifetime pursuit of self-awareness, motivation, and improvement. Now all of that comes with challenges. Even though we have the best intentions, sometimes if we are stressed or if we get up on the wrong foot or in a bad mood we may treat people in a way that is not gentlemanly. If that happens, own it, apologize and be sincere and people will respect you more for it and understand it.

You might like The True Gentleman by John Walter Wayland (Virginia, 1899): "The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe."

I've been this way my whole life. Even when walking through junior high. I've gotten quite a bit of nonapproval through my years about the way I am. People often say that I "should just be a kid." As you might expect, I've been the lone wolf my whole life.

I loved this subject. I've been called a gentleman throughout my life (I'm 63 now) and I can give the credit to my father. As a young boy and teen I would always observe how he treated my mother and others. Although he and I didn't get into many conversations about character or such I still learned a great deal. I plan on leaving a letter to my 7 year old Grandson with these words of wisdom, to be given to him when I pass away. I consider my son to be one also. I believe he did like I did. He learned and became one through observation. By the way, I certainly don't hit all 11 points on the mark but I do try. Lets spread this to our younger men when ever the opportunity arise.

"A gentleman doesn't argue simply for the sake of being right." I believe this to be one of the most important lessons everyone should learn. If you are correct that's fine, however, if you are wrong, then you need to be able to accept that and rethink your current belief on the subject, keeping the new information you just learned in mind.

I think that the concept of the gentleman is not old-fashioned and backwards but instead a vision of masculinity perfectly suited to today's world and as I said, I really appreciate that you showcase how this vision of the old-school gentleman suits today's ideals.

This kind of thing has been on my mind too. I went to a fantastic barber the other day that was the true, A1 gentlemanly experience. Wood paneled room, fireplace, complimentary alcoholic beverage. I then found myself wondering, "what's the womanly counterpart to this?" There such a cult of personality around the idea of being a "Gentleman" but I struggle to think of the female equivalent. I feel like there's a really good discussion here as to why isn't a thing, or, if there is, what even is it? Everyone deserves to take pride in their gender identity.

Your values and advice are completely correct. I agree and try to do those things. I just find that society and history judge people by broad social class based on wealth. Somebody like Sir Alex Ferguson who is wealthy and knighted will be remembered as an upper class "gentleman" whereas he is pretty much the opposite. And, say, our poor grandfathers as working class "men" even though they may have been the epitome of polite gentlemanliness but happened to be poor.

That is very very close to my definition of a gentleman and I aspire to master the individual parts that make you a valuable person to your environment. Still, I strive for this kind of perfection for the sake of it, not to gather compliments. What makes it quite hard to keep this kind of composure together is an environment that mistakes this for being reserved, a snob or sees a less agressive way of communicating as a weakness, not an unconditioned toll of respect towards the conversation partner. Being respectful in my eyes is one of the most important and at the same time one of the hardest things to master. :) Thank you very much for this video, it was very uplifting and reassuring!

They need to show these videos to high school students. They would be a great teaching aid for HS seniors about to head out into the world, and who have probably never had any lessons like these before.

What an amazing video, it could only have been created by an amazing young gentleman as yourself! I am a mature lady and can say that these guidelines apply to both genders. I wish there were more people like you in our world, maybe you will inspire a new generation of real men. I have already subscribed and will link your videos to my son. Wishing you the very best in all your endeavors.

We need more voices like yours reminding us of these timeless values that are being lost in a post-modern maelstrom of selfish decadence and PC tyranny! Thank you!!!!
