8 Secrets To Being Well Dressed - How To Look Like A Gentleman | Kirby Allison

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In today’s video, I am going to share with you eight secrets to being the best-dressed gentleman the room. It is really not that hard or that expensive to be really well-dressed. There are, in fact, basic hallmarks of a well-dressed gentleman that anyone can follow.

1. Good Hygiene.
Looking really good and being a gentleman always starts with pride in yourself. And that always begins with one’s personal hygiene. The initial hallmark of being a well-dressed gentleman is always good hygiene. Once your personal cleanliness is taken care of, you can focus on your personal ensemble for the day.
2. Clean, unstained, well-mended clothes.
They don't have to be new -- but they can't be ripped, stained, and threadbare. You also don’t have to wear a new, freshly laundered shirt every day, but it does have to be pressed. But if it sinks or has any visible stains, wear a fresh one.
3. Well-Pressed.
Now that your clothes are clean, they also need to well-pressed, with a crisp trouser crease and freshly-pressed dress shirt are essential.
4. Properly-Fitting.
Your dress shirt, jacket, and trousers need to fit properly. And always better a little loose than a little tight. It always looks bad if your clothes are too tight or too small. But clothes that are a little large can have their own look. Just like Anderson & Shepphard -- their jackets are a little large to create drape, and people think they are amazing.
If you are not comfortable in a suit, it doesn't fit. I'm telling you, the most comfortable clothing a man can wear is a dress ensemble. A properly-fitting wool suit where the fabric is matched to the climate, a dress shirt whose collar fits properly, and tie is absolutely the most comfortable clothing a man can wear. If it isn't, it doesn't fit. That is a fact.
5. Well-Polished Dress Shoes
Well-polished shoes with unfrayed fray laces absolutely make difference in being well-dressed. This has been proven study after study. Both men and women notice the condition of a man’s shoes right away. Not only with well-polished shoes make you look better, but they’ll make your shoes last longer. A little bit of effort, some Saphir shoe polish, and our Hanger Project High-Shine Chamois is all you need. Of course, we have an extensive library of shoe care tutorials to help you learn how to properly care for and polish your shoes.
6. Pocket Square
You can never go wrong with a white pocket square; however; matching your pocket square to your ensemble in a neutral or complementary color is always a good idea. However, never exactly match your pockets square to your tie in the same silk.
7. Nice Tie with a Proper Dimple
Most ties look best with a dimple. And most ties look good with their ends relatively close to each other.
8. A nice Fragrance.
It is always nice to top off a beautiful ensemble with a little bit of a nice cologne so that you smell as good as you look. It doesn’t have to be an expensive fragrance, but it does have to smell good. Just be careful to not use too much so that it is not overpowering. The only way you can go wrong with fragrance is if you use way too much. For a large part of the day, people will be put off because you smell way too strong. But, in general, some cologne is a good idea.
If you are preparing for anything important, you start by taking care of yourself. You take a nice hot shower, you shave, you trim your nose and ears, and eyebrows if necessary. You put on a little cologne. Shine your shoes, press any garments that need to be touched up, and then dress well. This doesn’t have to be difficult, time-consuming, or expensive - instead, it can be a ritual you enjoy and to which you look forward.

An additional hint. Create the habit of preparing your outfit before going to bed. This avoids a morning chaos and gives you time to better select your outfit according to the event ahead. Also, a man in a rush looses most benefits of being well dressed.

I've just discovered your channel and it's a joy. I have a friend who did a short apprenticeship at Anderson and Sheppard and made me a suit many years ago. He still makes his own clothes as a hobby and the suit he made me still wears beautifully feels very special when I have an occasion to put it on. As you say when something is bespoke it's truly another level of comfort.

Great video. My wife and I frequently discuss the need for 'charm school' for young men, echoing many of your points in this video. I concur with your observation on other people reacting to nice [not expensive] clothes. Even now in my 60s and plump, I still get second looks from the opposite sex when wearing a button down shirt that fits and decent slacks. In previous jobs, blue collar and near blue collar, I frequently changed shirts two or three times a day. Even in my present white collar job, I never wear the same shirt more than 9 or 10 hours.

I love that he specifically mentions going for slightly fuller cuts, pleats and maybe even slightly fuller pants if you can go for suspenders. And he made that claim 4 years ago... He wasn't falling for the latest fad of suits that are too tight, with pants and sleaves that are cut way too short. I also appreciate how you can do all of the above even on a budget. Whether you paid a little or a lot might have some impact on quality, everything you should be clean, in good condition, pressed where it needs to, and properly fitted to your body.

I live in SW Florida where we get, perhaps, a week or so of cool weather from December through January. Dressing well in a sub-tropical climate presents many challenges and it’s all too easy to default to the shorts and flip flops in the name of comfort. I’d love to see a video channel, blog, forum etc that focuses on the well dressed man in warmer climates that challenges the overdone Tommy Bahama look.

Kirby: Thank you for another great video! I think the most important of these suggestions is personal hygiene, one that seems to fallen off logarithmically in recent years. In addition, I feel fragrances should be used sparingly, especially inexpensive one since they may bother those around you. Investigate the ingredients, but purchase high quality, maybe not the most expensive; softer scents are usually better than sharp.

I was watching the U.S. Senate hearings this past week, and noticed there was not a single pocket square to be seen among the gents. Perhaps they think it's too stylish, not properly focusing on the people's business (the same goes for both houses of Parliament in London). The suits and ties were elegant and understated, to be sure (thank God for charcoal and navy). But something seemed missing. We should send them this video. Show them how it's done, when appearance indicates exactly and immediately how one feels about oneself. Thanks, Kirby, first class as always. Best, Bobby

I am curious about the cloth you use to safely iron trousers. Is it expressly made for that purpose? How can I acquire one? Thank you.

What are your thoughts on after shave lotions vs colognes? I prefer after shaves - a bit less “perfumy”

Kirby, what do you think about having a large cologne collection? Should a man have a ‘signature scent’ or is it better to rotates scents throughout the week?

You don't need a large collection, but definitely a collection. 6 to 8 fragrances are plenty for 90% of men and can cover signature scent, special event, date night and each season.

Kirby, well done with your video, 8 Secrets To Being Well Dressed. I very much enjoyed it. I find fewer and fewer men taking the time to look good, distinguished and, feel good about themselves. If I may make a couple of suggestions: First, wearing a clean properly fitted undershirt will save your valued dress shirt from those unsightly underarm sweat marks and subsequent stains. It also keeps them from sliding out of your pants. Second, completely agree with the use of a fresh scented cologne; but, I never spray it on my clothes as it will eventually stain. A good cologne is formulated to react with your skin and body temperature, not your clothes. A light mist before getting dressed should do.Thank you again. Look forward to more of your great videos. Cheers

This is great info for guys. Can I add something for hygiene? And please correct me if I'm wrong, but I find it offputting to see chest hair sticking up above the tie knot. It's always clean shaven guys too.

Kirby! Mention health too! Your skin & pheromones are so crucial when dealing with partners, both business and pleasure. I’d say feeling great is equal to looking great! And health is wealth ;£

Found my neckties moving too much when trying cases in the courtroom, I don't like tie clips. The solution was simple just slip the short end through the loop on the back of the front tie section. Next take a safety pin and pin the narrow piece to your shirt from the INSIDE thus hiding the pin and anchoring the tie. The tie stays in place w/o looking plastered to your chest...works nice every time.
