What it Actually Takes to Race a $500 Car for 24 Hours!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

At last year's endurance race, we failed badly blowing up our engine in only 15 laps... This year, the ChrisFix Soapy Wooder Racers are ready for their comeback! We spent a year rebuilding and swapping a junkyard motor into the car and fixing tons of small broken parts to make our endurance lemon BMW ready to race for 14hrs. Will we last more than 15 laps? Will the engine blow up again? Can we make it to the finish line after 14hrs of racing? Find out!

At a guess, the lightweight Miata believed they could outbreak the BMW and get onto the inside line, forcing you to the outside. Having said that, from the rear footage it looks as though the BMW had already started turning meaning the Miata had to leave space rather than crossing your racing line.

Advices for the pit stops: The driver that is going to step in should be already prepared before the car even enters the pit lane. As for the fuel, try fitting a transparent fuel tank with a bigger refill hole and use more powerful pumps. Every 3 hours check the brakes, especially the pads, brake fluid check is also advised. During repairs (like the throttle thing) check tire's pressure and adjust it. Advices in general: Try to not rev the car at its maximum, keep it 2k rpm lower than red line. Do some lift and coast to preserve fuel and in medium - high speed corners try to stay lower on rmps to use less fuel as possible

I disagree, I think the Miata is just able to brake much later being so light, so even though it seems the BMW is ahead at the start of the turn the Miata is alongside in the corner. Not blaming the BMW driver, but these two cars have vastly different performance.

If he had been alongside (at least front wheel to front door) before turn in, that would have been fine, BMW would/should have given him space. But in this case BMW should have gotten right of way, BMW was faster, the pass was going to happen anyways. Don't get me wrong I like so aggressive racing but I don't think it was appropriate for this kind of race.

Agree - the MX5 (sorry, Brit here 😁) was in the wrong, you had the corner by a mile. Ultimately, though, just a racing accident. I do feel it was deeply unfair that you had to take a "4 wheels off the track + collision" penalty for something that a) wasn't your fault, and b) the driver at the time was doing the sensible thing & checking the car was still driveable before returning to the track. IMHO Lemons should look at a rule change there.

i am not sure by that - i understand both. The BMW lifted way too early with having a car this close behind them. I know it's an endurance race, but still, you've got to expect that if you lift off that early in a corner with someone not that far back, they might send it. But yeah, the miata was a lot slower anyway and they would probably get passed on the first opportunity, so it was very unnecessary by them.

@Chrisfix I am a local driving instructor for people trying to learn proper racing etiquette, racing line, and car control. You guys did well, and the red Miata incident was due to that car braking too late and missing the racing line. He went inside and had about 5 mph too much speed. Once he missed the braking point he couldn't do anything about it. The car couldn't hold that inside line with the available grip, so as soon as he hit the rumble strip it unloaded that side of the suspension slightly. That put to much stress on the outer front tire and he understeered into you guys.

Came here to make this comment. He unfortunately got startled by them passing and just completely lost his braking point... I thought he had dove in but for that kind of race diving in shouldn't be an issue since everybody wants to make it to the end. Great advice Stigg!

If you would like to change for a better oil for the engine, go with LIQUI MOLY. There’s a specific one that is gray and has like specific inhibitors in them that not only will it very well coat the cylinder walls, it’ll help with preventing unnecessary wear from rod bearings as well. A buddy of mine ran the same oil in his E36 M3 when he was running laps at the fairgrounds that day and when he did a full tune up on it, along with changing a few gaskets here and there including the valve cover gasket, the inside of the motor was bright silver. Not a single speck of brown tarnish on it.

It was the Miatas fault.. in the racing world, when" being over taking " (you), the car in front holds their racing line. It's the job of the passer (Matia) to drive a different race line around you. It looked like he hit his brakes too late. Probably hoped to dive past you before you turned in for the curve, BUT he was unsuccessful. Excellent video, by the way. I run Amsoil signature series in my race cars, with a Wix XP OR K&N oil filter. I know that BMW uses a cartridge, so your filter options are limited. I would go with Wix or Mann

Track Addict has a feature where you can set pit speeds, and it will flash/yell at you when you are exceeding it - a good reminder for when you pit while being too excited :) Awesome video, awesome time, thanks for posting! Oh, regarding the rear contact with the red Miata, IMO, it was his fault, not your guys. It's always the responsibility of the overtaking car to ensure a safe and clean pass. Your guy did that in the straight, just before corner entry, with a good gap. The Miata essentially tried to late-brake you guys, but you were already cutting in toward the apex. Typically, if the other car was alongside your guy BEFORE the corner entry, then you would have had to give him the inside or else make contact. He tried to get alongside you by late-braking too close to comer entry IMO. At that point, he was attempting a pass, and failed to ensure it happened safely and cleanly. He either went in a little too hot, wasn't paying attention, or was pissed at getting passed.

Miata either braked late or tried to lunge in for the pass on turn entry, with a car so close behind you, there is something known as the vortex of danger/death. essentially, taking the normal racing line, you appear to be leaving a space to the driver behind, it's tempting to fill the gap and attempt the overtake, but it rarely works. if you have a car that is close enough to rear end you entering the turn, you should take the defensive line (inside line) entering.

Can you link to where I said we sold the wheels? And the "interior trim" part of that rule must be new since that didn't exist when we started racing so we've probably been grandfathered in now. We've raced this car 3 times so if anything the value of this car keeps dropping and they know what were bringing each time. And at the end of the day if you don't believe any of that, all the non safety rules are up to interpretation and judging, if they judge things a certain way then that's how it is even if it's against the rules ;)

Oh man, that looked like so much fun! I was meant to race with a team several years back, but couldn't swing it financially at the time. I really wish I could've now. Congrats to the Chris fix, b is for build, and rich rebuild teams!

Hey Chris. Great storytelling! I guess you could also include more highlights & struggles from the other teams for next year's race, and I would still be hooked watching!!
