What is Uncanny Valley and why Human Look-Alikes Put Us on Edge

Ғылым және технология

Have you ever been to Uncanny Valley? …
Oh, wait a second, you don’t know where that is? …
No, it’s not in Japan. And no, not Canada either. …
Well, we’re messing with you a bit here. It’s actually not a place at all, in fact the uncanny valley phenomenon relates to a feeling. Have you ever felt strangely unsettled or disturbed when confronted with a poor CGI animation or a human-like robot?
You’re not alone, this feeling is exactly what the Uncanny Valley theory is all about. In this video we discuss not only examples which invoke the Uncanny Valley effect but also try to understand exactly why we feel this way when faced by humanoids, digital or animatronic.

    Hello Sumsub command! Thank you for another awesome video about digital threads) But I have a question about another digital thread that is going right now. Have you already seen the last video from Business Casula? They expose the violation of KZread rules by KZread itself, in favor of a channel that violates copyright policies. I believe that this case deserves to be known rather by your auditory specifically, because it's about threat to all of us on the platform, creators and viewers.

    for me its just the thought of something moving almost human int he distance where you cant quite see it or talk to it but its not moving right. its moving a little too fast and jerky for a human but not so jerky it looks like a robot. its definately flesh being not metal but its not human. it is capable of anything and has no empathy. it would not hesiatate to rip your organs out of yoru body and eat them in front of you

    Uncanny Valley and "Je ne sais quoi" are 2 sides of the same coin. One is just a positive feeling of attraction, and the other is a negative feeling of possible danger. Uncanny Valley only happens with people and "human like things". Especially with faces, and sometimes also with voices. So things like wax fruit, fake plants and flowers, counterfeit and knock off goods, fake tasting artificial flavors, and fake smelling scents don't give the uncanny valley response. The exception is if these things move in a strange way. The less something is like an "average human" or "ideal human", the more uncanny it is. It can be explained by several responses that male someone feel like someone might be dangerous. 1) Death and disease reminder sensitivity 2) Animal reminder sensitivity, especially of dangerous animals. The most important being yellow eyes, glowing eyes, or animal-like eyes. 3) Paranormal and supernatural reminder sensitivity (for people who are superstitious) 4) Fear of the unknown and strange and unusual, which includes odd movement 5) Ugliness 6) Mixed messages and things that seem deceptive or fake 7) Personal reminder sensitivity 1 - 5 are self explanatory 6) Fake smiles and smiles that are off and facial features that seem out of place are especially uncanny. Botox makes people uncanny because their faces don't move naturally. Some people also look like cartoons, or like they are "wearing a mask" just because they are born different or they have a medical condition. 7) If someone reminds you of someone who you just personally do not like such as a family member who you don't like, this will also give an uncanny valley response. Uncanny Valley associations perpetuates in culture. For example, uncanny valley is used for characters in horror movies, and then people who vaguely remind you of these characters in horror movies can give the uncanny valley response. So even if someone just reminds you of Jack Nicholson in the Shining just because of how they look, that can give an uncanny valley response.

    13:22 Is it just me who noticed 3/4 of the "untrustworthy" faces on the bottom were POC whereas 3/4 of the "trustworthy" faces on the top were white? Also the top row are all obviously young women (two for sure obviously being little girls). I'm sure there is more variety in the middle but I definitely think there is some human bias going into this. They should trying doing all black AI generated faces vs all white real faces or all adult AI faces vs all children real faces to see if the Ai-generated faces are still considered most trustworthy.

  • @RadRicardo446

    @RadRicardo446

    Жыл бұрын

    I thought the exact same and was surprised so few people pointed it out. One other thing I noticed is that everyone on the top row is smiling. But it is interesting to see what the AI defines as a trustworthy face.

  • @AJBlueJay

    @AJBlueJay

    Жыл бұрын

    It's simple. The more a face resembles a normal human baby, the more neotenous and 'innocent" it looks, so less threatening and more trustworthy. So a house cat or a Pomeranian is cute because the eyes are more round and they it remind us of human babies, but a wolf or lion is scary because it doesn't remind us of a hunan baby, and they have predator eyes. The less a face looks like a baby, the less neotenous and "innocent" it looks, so "more dangerous" and less trustworthy. Top 4 faces are very neotenous, generically attractive, and also smiling. All 4 are also females. Women are more neotenous than men. Bottom 4 faces are low neoteny, ugly, and look angry or unfriendly. 3 out of 4 are men. The controversial part to talk about is "race". Babies frequently have lighter finer hair, lighter eyes, and lighter skin, and these darken with age and puberty. Black babies are usually born a shade or two lighter than their eventual skin color. So "lighter" is more like a baby, and seems more innocent. But too light skin, and then it looks unhealthy to people and reminds them of disease, anemia, corpses, and death. While a so called "healthy tan" just hides signs of illness such as anemia or jaundice better. This is why white skin is a trope of evil characters such as ghosts, vampires, zombies. But racial biases of course also depend highly on the individual racial biases of who you ask. Very light eyes are rare, so less like the "average human", unless if you live somewhere where they are very common. Very light eyes only look good on neotenous faces, and look better with tan or brown skin. On adult men without neotenous faces, very light eyes can quickly look like wolf eyes or predator eyes. Especially yellow and amber eyes, which is another movie trope of evil characters. Green depends on how light it is and whether it looks more yellow or more bluish. So Damion Poitier's eyes look "more scary" and less neotenous than Tyra Banks' eyes, which don't "look scary". This is also why makeup looks less uncanny on women than on men, even if the makeup is obvious. Women's faces are just more neotenous on average then men, and women typically use makeup to look younger and more neotenous. And to be clear, how someone's face looks has almost nothing to do with whether they choose to do good or bad things.

    Another topic I would like to see you make a video about is how Google and Co. monopolize the internet / the information on it. Just look at how few of the allegedly millions of search results your search engine really shows you when you search for the word car or pizza, for example. The whole thing is already having a massive impact, with traffic to small and medium-sized websites being almost completely cut off now.

    Very good in-depth discussion of the Uncanny Valley. My belief is the the UV will eventually be filled in. Partially be cause the technologies will improve, and partially because people will become more used to the non-human features. I did not notice anything 'different' about the AI portraits. So it has already begun.

    There are many factual errors in this video. "android" doesnt mean human like. it specifically means male like. this is an understandable conflation as humans are generally assumed male in colonized societies. male is taken for granted as the default. during the talk of mirror neurons, they are said to be responsible for perceptions of empathy. but the description and theory involves sympathy, which is completely different. a cursory internet search will bring up "empathy", but its a misunderstanding of actual research. sympathy is "reading" other people/the room/... empathy is direct understanding of what someone else has experienced from ones own personal experience. ending the talk of mirror neurons with the "theory" of autism spectrum is ableist. its been a thoroughly disproven theory for decades. Its a common ableist stereotype that autists dont have empathy. this goes back even past the "theory" of autistic children being changlings that were switched with the "real" children as babies by trolls or ferlies. one of the common conditions that presents with autism, that is to say, not necessarily an inherent feature of autism itself, is hyposynaptogenesis. that is, its one of the common neurodivergences and disorders that presents with the condition of under generating synapses, not mirror neurons. this leads to not being able to process different types of data in the typical way to adapt and conform to a given societies expectations. the less frequent the neuron patterns fire, the quicker the "burnout" from sensory and social stimulation. that is to say, they not only empathize quite a lot, but they sympathize and empathize too much, because of not being able to suitably classify their readings of others and experiencing things differently, their brains often automatically think of too many possibilities that dont seem to quite fit what they take as the appropriate social context. its too much information that most people simply assume correctly, almost as if by accident. but autists often cant assume in the way we typically think of as making assumptions. long story short -- too late, its not that they have less empathy, but that they present less confabulation. It wasnt very accurate to go with how wax figures arent an example, or AI generated faces as an example of the Uncanny Valley. the uncanny valley relates to how humans develop artificial human likenesses, and not how other AI generate human likenesses. so wax figures absolutely apply and theres been discussion for ages about how so many people find them so disturbing for this very reason, and people also discuss how AI generated images dont promote the unease like the uncanny valley, so even if you personally think it does, it doesnt really apply here. a much more relevant comparison would be something like the AI assisted deep fakes used in media and film, like the newer star wars movies and shows. there was a HLOT of talk about how the Leia face from the end of Rogue One, was not only inappropriate, but incredibly creepy. the Luke face as well, from the mandalorian also spun much discussion. and since you invoked a sense of the the uncanny valley as relating to humans natural classification system as being able to distinguish dead things from the living, and the Leia face was used to animate a womxn known to be DED, that seems like a strangely missed point, instead bringing up movie monsters portrayed by living humans with basic makeup, even including a one of he most celebrated depictions of dracula, an icon not only NOT usually described as disturbing, but as an alluring and hypnotic sex symbol. so, WTAF?
