Speaking as someone who actively tried to read opinions from the full breadth of the political spectrum, and could only ever find sources that The Machine Gods *thought* that I wanted, I think I'm gonna go ahead and say that it's the robot's fault. Yes, the AI is responding to human behavior, but that doesn't mean that it's responding *well*, and the fact that we often can't even SEE what the opposition is saying creates a lot of division that isn't really necessary.

  • @prachi8771

  • @Alkaris

It's certainly interesting to say the least, but all this filtering and catering to ones political beliefs, social standings, etc... it is pretty harmful to be exposed to such things that only reaffirm our current beliefs and opinions, I do believe search results should be more organic and show us a broader spectrum from all sides instead of one-sided. If I want to find something very specific I should be able to find it with ease, without having to wade through a sea of digital garbage thats been handpicked by an algorithm that uses past searches to give me results I'm looking for. More than often it's really hard to find a specific issue or something you want to look up. Say for example you're looking for technical help or information on something in particular, but all you get is dead-end posts with no solution to what you're looking for, it makes it really annoying, because you're being shown irrelevant information that isn't relevant to your searches. Say for example I'm looking up a technical issue with a computer and it's an issue so rare, so obscure that very few people have had issues with, you're most likely to hit dead-ends with old posts from several years ago, or no responses to their issue or some other cases zero results.

ya,we should have toggle/drop down option on every app to searching by what we like, to whats more accurate objectively.more ppl will have to suggest it to youtube/sns/google etc apps. 🔹just like how we can search stuff by popularity/new content/high priority etc in some places. 🔸but if you're aware confirmation bias & tailored social media feed exists, we can still use it to change our mindset for better (or worse sadly). 🔹eg.if you see your feed slightly important but always negative/entertaining but not as useful & affecting your mental health & productivity? 🔹unsubscribe those channels, start searching for, clicking on better stuff & following better channels & you can change that terrain. 🔹I list my unsubbed channels in an unsubbed channels playlist incase i do need em & list the videos that arent high priority in the playlists topicwise & keep a high priority playlist for things i want info on & achieve rn & it keeps me from clicking low priority but entertaining videos due to fomo. 🔹if i want an objective view, i can also search in discursive ways. 🔹avoid only one sided questions & search for both pros/cons/good/bad etc & type what you dont want to know but could be right. 🔹Eg. If you search whether somethings good/correct/has pros, also search if same things bad/incorrect/has cons even if you're afraid of the results, balance your confirmation bias & optimism with pessimism. 🔹thats helped me steer the internet into giving me diverse opinions. 🔹i look for comments & youtube videos with diverse opinions too, you wouldn't be able to tell by my entire search history as to why i searched what i searched sometimes because one search/video i search, click, playlist is opposite of the other,i search due to something i saw someone mentioning on-offline on comments, post, blogs, entertainment works etc & I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. 🔹its like searching for pro-mlmers explanations vs searching for anti-mlm content the next to find a middle ground. 🔹it does feel pretty annoying if the videos are inflammatory, toxic & you disagree with em tho, so i just save em in the playlist to know their channel & unsub. 🔹so they don't clog my feed & i can balance different opinions butones that are semi-/constructive than completely toxic (which i take in account but leave asap). 🔹& if thats still feels not a complete picture, then when you want an objective view you can use incognito mode. 🔹i got incognito mode idea from here, but i use rest of the things & its raised my tolerance to diverse opinions & reduce misinformation due to echo chambers & think critically more even if i haven't thought of it before due to different ppl pushing me to think about things i havent thought of. 🔹same thing happens in real life too, if ppl only meet certain group of ppl & dont diversify ppl they meet on/offline, search about different places etc & dont listen to their opinions they only get one sided information with either echo chambers/just unbalanced information. 🔹& they end up thinking whats default norm in their city/circle is the only norm & default all around the world. 🔹ppl may be able to tell what we really thought by cour comments (for that time being as our opinions change too)/what we think if its recent opinion, unless we couldn't express what i really think. 🔹Which is where i feel like tho internet knows a lot about us superficially like a documentation. 🔹unless it tracks our comments & tries to use the information to figure out our reason for searching a health related video & issue we may have (which d be creepy if it does, tho it d still wont be as accurate if ppl are self diagnosing). 🔹it doesn't really know us deeply enough except for knowing us just enough to get us addicted to itself which is still powerful.

I think it is a combination of both. The tech companies wanted to come up with algorithms that would keep the users invested in their app. But humans have this natural urge to "belong to something". So when they see divisive opinions, they immediately take a side. The algorithms help reinforce this behaviour to a point that once someone chooses a side, they just won't listen to anything slightly different.

Funnily enough, KZread gives me occasionally a "Show stuff you'd not normally watch" option in my suggestions and goes ahead and shows me stuff I'd probably seen multiplke times (in the past) or related content I already have an idea about.... Last time I got a slightly diverse set of suggestions was when I subbed to an Atheo-tuber whom was being dragged into what seems to be the "alt-veganism" end of the "bread-tube echo-chamber" spectrum. Though for the most part, I must admit, hanging in the "techtuber", "Atheo-tuber" and a few other similar "echo-chambers" is a bit comforting... mainly as I've long given up on "fringe-watching" to find out what/why/how/etc of a broad spectrum of political views etc... (Seems that it's all just as toxic as it were in around the end of 2012 ramping up in 2013, just more concentrated, bitter and polarized than ever when visiting either extreme echo-chambers)

Most of my internet time is spent on KZread, a place with a very pronounced filter bubble. Thankfully it’s all around hobbies like electronics/computing, photography, woodwork, fabrication etc. It’s pretty amazing how many people think conspiracy theories etc are factual. However, offline I'm a disabled person, with a disabled wife and I work at a Disabled Peoples Organisation. Even prior to becoming disabled I worked with adults with learning difficulties, thus I'd say Im fairly grounded in the bubble that’s the world of disabilities. I'm also a recovering alcoholic blessed with 26 years sobriety and especially in my early days I think the echo chamber of the AA saved my life. I needed people to say "I understand you, I'm the same."

I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by your video. I'm here because 2 close friends of many years, one male and one female, seem to have become right-wing radicalized since the start of the covid pandemic. Basically they've come out as neonazis in the past couple of months. I'm appalled; I've known them as compassionate people-first individuals over the years. They are unknown to each other but both seemed to follow an identical progression of social/political positions. First they both became anti-covid, making covid is a hoax type reposts. This developed to anti-vax generally. In the months following came NWO (New World Order) conspiracy reposts, then anti-immigrant, anti-left wing/communist, white supremacy/white genocide, anti-lgbtq, etc type reposts. In the past few months reposts have also become pro-authoritarian (e.g. "we need someone decisive to sort out this clown world", "we need a leader the people can get behind", "at the moment we can't afford to worry too much about snowflakes with hurt feelings"), with a lot of the material I could track back to extreme right wing sites. Attempts to discuss the issues result in both getting very angry, with attacks on my character and my motives and claims that I'm brainwashed by the msm. I don't want to sound academic elitist, but neither of these friends had any tertiary education, and both have said that they trust their feelings ahead of "so-called" experts, or factual analysis, which they claim is anyway produced by "stooges" or "puppets". At the moment I'm at a loss. I want to keep the relationships which I'm afraid one or both might suddenly terminate if I push too hard. Hmm...

Yeah, there are those cases, I also have such cases in my environment. But I also do know a lot of cases where relatively normal people in my environment became radical left-wing during the "pandemic". They want a duty to vaccinate ("Unvaccinated are social pest"), they become to think that implementing socialism would be a good idea, they think they would have to save the world from the "climate crisis" and that the would have to abandon private transport, and they also are surprisingly authoritarian ("the government has to rise the taxes to make people not use their cars anymore", "lets blow up a pipeline") and seem to act more and more like the Nazis in 1933. And also I have the impression that there is no chance of having a normal talk with them. So seems the problem exists on both sides, but I made the experience that on the left side the people seem to not see extremism and radicalism as a problem, they seem to only see it as a problem if the opposite side is doing it. Also the left seems to call every normal guy that does not have exact the same oppinion as them a radical/extremist. And because of my experience with all the hypocrisy and the double standards of the people on the political left I met so far I don't give a fuck about radicals and extremists any more. I don't like them, but I'm at the point where my only interest is to keep all this bullshit and conspiracy theories of the extreme lefts and the extreme rights off of me and to stay safe from the problems that are related to it. I'm more into the republicans, but also have some liberal views (liberal in the old definition - not the recent definition that means marxism), but after having met a lot of left-wingers at the university and seeing how similar they are to the Nazis when someone has other oppinions than them I realized that I have to view most of them as my enemies, so I don't talk much with them and don't keep much contact with them. I also do not openly talk to them about political things, especially not when I'm not in the anonymity of the internet. I'm sure you know the term "Cancel Culture"? "This developed to anti-vax generally. In the months following came NWO (New World Order) conspiracy reposts, then anti-immigrant, anti-left wing/communist, white supremacy/white genocide, anti-lgbtq, etc type reposts" Okay, I think I just want to give my 2 cents to this: - anti-vax generally: sure, this is a little bit narrow minded, but after the government did everything to compel people into an experimental vaccination it is understandable that they completly lost the trust into the government and the medical sector - NWO conspiracy reports: I'm not sure if that's a real thing (currently I think it is probably BS), but there are definetly tendencies into the direction of a global totalitarian state. For example, the WHO is currently working on a contract that disables the constitution of all countries in case of a new "pandemic". And you have to know that the changed the definition of a pandemic some years ago. Now for a pandemic, a pathogen does not need to be able to cause heavy damage to the economic or the people for calling out a pandemic... Also the central banks of a lot of countries want to abandon cash. They say it would be agains money laundry and terrorism, but in reality the just want to gain more power and be able to implement more surveilance. - anti-immigrant: Most of them are not "anti-immigrant", that's a strawman argument. Most of them are against uncontrolled illegal mass-migration and the problems that are related to it. And you really ask why no one wants to talk to you? - anti-left wing/communist: You do not need to be a right-wing to be against communism. Just look at the body count of the soviet union, look how the people lived in the DDR, look like the people live in North Korea and what a dystopian country china is. Then you know that communisms is just old dated crap. - white supremacy/white genocide: Okay, the first is really right-wing BS, the latter is a fear that results from all this pro-mass-migration politics of the left wings, combined with all the migrant quotas. Add all this laws that allow "people of color" to legally steal from shops and the BLM demonstration (which was more of a war than a demonstration) and you have good reason to think that the lefties are leading a white genocide. - anti-lgbtq: According to my experience this is mostly the backlash for all this insane gender stuff, the early sexualization of kids and all this massive gay propaganda the lefties try to force on the people. And BTW: I have to come to the conclusion, that there is no pandemic and there was no such, just from my own thoughts to this whole thing and the information I got from the media. So, I'm against mandatory vaccination. I have no problem with someone who wants to get vaccinated, but I will definitely will not get a vaccination and will unleash hell if someone tries to force me to vaccinate. Especially because the freedom of the individual is the most valuable for me, so this include the freedom of choice about vaccinations. And don't you lefties always preach slogans like "My body my choice"? And then suddenly when it's about experimental vaccinations against a virus that is harmless for 99% of the people it is suddenly not "My body my choice" anymore? And if I got you right, you are for mandatory vaccinations. This is one example of the double standards I wrote about before. It is possible that you are an exception, maybe you are not in this double standards like your leftie mates, but you should definetly first blame your mates for their hypocrisy when you want to know why most people of the republican side don't want to talk to you anymore. "Attempts to discuss the issues result in both getting very angry, with attacks on my character and my motives and claims that I'm brainwashed by the msm." Now you know how it is for me - as a republican with some liberal views - to talk to lefts. For example about illegal mass-migration, LGBT-whatsoever, feminism, etc. "but neither of these friends had any tertiary education, and both have said that they trust their feelings ahead of "so-called" experts, or factual analysis, which they claim is anyway produced by "stooges" or "puppets"." I understand your point, but the problem is, that you can buy studies with a predefined result to use them for political propaganda. I'm not sure how big this problem really is, but if I look on how much pressure the big social media put in the last years to censor non-left-wing opponions and this whole Cancel Culture thing at the universities, I would assume that it is a big problem. Oh and you currently speak with a republican that has a university degree. "at the moment we can't afford to worry too much about snowflakes with hurt feelings" I actually don't want to go deep into this whole political stuff, but if you are interested, I could try to explain what they mean with that.

You're in your own bubble, it's an American based bubble, your bubble says right wingers are a certain way. I'm not in an American bubble so I'm confused by all those traits you listed as not every American I've seen on the internet hold those values, nor would they say that's the foundation of right wing beliefs and not everyone calling themselves left have good moral ideas. The American bubble also makes you think in binary, left or right.
