Trent's original version is the saddest, mainly for the point where he was at in his life at the time, which was no care and self destruction

In Malcom Gladwell's podcast Revisionist History, there is an episode about the saddest song. He makes a convincing case that the saddest song is "He stopped loving her today" by George Jones. That is a pretty sad song.

Alice in Chains "Nutshell" gets me just with the guitars alone. And Chris Cornell sang "Nothing Compares 2 U" better than Sinead O'Connor ever could.

Totally aligned with your choices. And Chris Cornell did an acoustic version of “I will always love you” days after Whitney Houston died.

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton is very sad-at the funeral of a guitar-playing friend some of his friends sang this and a lot of people openly cried. However, someone here commented “Strange Fruit” has to be the saddest song. I agree since it deals with lynching African Americans in the Jim Crow South.

Listen to radioheads songs. Story behind the song doesnt make a song sad.

Faith's Song by Celtic Woman (Live at Johnstown Castle) is one that I use when someone is remembering a pet (as our heart is broken but still keeps on beating).

Stop This Train by John Mayer. Might not feel like a sad song per se, but letting the lyrics sink in and force you to do some retrospective thinking. That can really pack a punch.

I totally misjudged this guy's face, he's always got the most interesting clips...like when he got Scotty going lol that little smirk cracks me up

You want sad? Try Art Garfunkel’s “Bright Eyes.” 😭😭😭

Man some good songs in here. John Prine's Sam Stone is a good one and also Garth Brooks the Dance. Nothing can really touch Clapton's tears in heaven though, thats tragic.

A lot of quality songs here. Most recent (newer) song that wrecked me as I lost my stepmom was "Visiting Hours" by Ed Sheeran.
