Do people get how crazy it is the Dolly Parton wrote I will always love you and Jolene in the same day? It’s like it da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa and wrote Jolene on the same day

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. Also, when Prince died, there were a number of Purple Rain tributes, which in itself, is a pretty good break-up song.

In Malcom Gladwell's podcast Revisionist History, there is an episode about the saddest song. He makes a convincing case that the saddest song is "He stopped loving her today" by George Jones. That is a pretty sad song.

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton is very sad-at the funeral of a guitar-playing friend some of his friends sang this and a lot of people openly cried. However, someone here commented “Strange Fruit” has to be the saddest song. I agree since it deals with lynching African Americans in the Jim Crow South.

60’s song, “Tell Laura I Love Her”. Racecar driver is in a wreck and as they pull his dying body out of the car, he says, “tell Laura…”. There’s actually even more to it that makes it even sadder as if that’s not enough.
