    Nice video. One thing that I would add: S-300/400/550 are integrated with other air defence systems such as buk and pantsir generating a layered defence. Overwhelming is probably the best thing to do, but the question is can the aircraft (that would be dropping those smaller missiles) get close enough without getting shot down. S-300 has a range of up to 250 kms and s-400 up to 380. I'd say that Russian military is well aware of overwhelming strategy and most likely have a counter strategy ready. Also, S-300 saw a very limited action in Syria and was effective there.I hope that there will not be a need to any more action.

    Problem with s300 and s400 for attackers is because they are mobile and they are just a piece of large air defense group. To get to s300 and s400 you fist must pass trough many many more systems that can shoot you down. So yes, West did train against s300 from 80', but didnt train against all components in which s300 function.

    Lol what are you talking about. You don´t have to get through layers and layers of other air defense systems because the S300 is the HIMAD (long range) system. It´s protected by other, shorter range systems (SHORAD) and some VSHORAD systems. Of course you´re not gonna get close enough for any of them to be a threat. They only pose a problem because they can shoot down some of your weapons fired at the S300, but they def won´t shoot you down :) Besides all you really need to do is hit the radar(s) of the S300 or S400 site and you´ve crippled it enough to get through and carry on with your mission - attacking the air defenses is never a mission in itself. It only clears the way to what you really want to hit and what that air defense site was supposed to protect in the first place.

    One new s500 does not really do anything. The thing they probably wouldn't be able to produce them in any substantial numbers under sanctions. Their domestic electronics is lagging behind for decades and their production capabilities are degrading for decades as well. Therefore, even if they have outstanding s500 (information about its real capabilities we don't have available) they actually have almost nothing. Same with T-14 Armata and Su-57 without new engines etc. Nice things on paper, but there are only handful of them IRL - turning out too little difference to see the difference.

    The video is good and informative. The only problem is that the tracking range of the s300 is 250-300km which neutralizes any ew platform or suppression systems the west has. If that is considered the west will be in big trouble. Also, the s300 may be protected by other highly mobile and capable Sam systems like the pantsir, tor, buk, Osa etc. Take into consideration that the launchers can be very far from the radar, which means that there is a high probability that western launch platforms may be easily ambushed. It will be very risky to underestimate this system.

    You are right. Pantsir's (and BuK, Tunguska, Osa, etc) are short ranged systems (well, the BuK is medium range, but you get my meaning) designed to protect critical infrastructure, like airports, power stations, factories, and so on.. and of course, critical military infrastructure like headquarters, and assets like planes, etc. The S-300 system is going to be well defended by these, im sure. I only hope that whatever Syrian troops man them.. that they are well trained, and that they take their job seriously.

    S-300/400 is mobile,so any mission that included taking those systems out would be very risky.By just maybe having S-300 that US bought from Croatia that had it from Ukraine means nothing.4 updated versions do mean a lot,so training on outdated and not used by Russia S-300 means absolute zero in actual combat engagement.Any mission against Russian AA systems would be thwarted by even greater radar stations,yes there are radars that also warn S-300/400 systems of incoming danger,also whats not mentioned here is that S systems are defended by fully mobile small to mid range AA systems like Tor-M3,Pantzir-M2 and Buk-M3.So S system is never alone and never standing target.

    “S-300/400 is mobile,so any mission that included taking those systems out would be very risky” Well this comment hasn’t aged well... Ukraine’s meagre airforce of Cold War era aircraft has proven capable of knocking out S-300s without loss when armed with the right weapons. It really doesn’t matter all that much if it’s ‘mobile’ - A truck can’t outrun an anti-radiation missiles.... Even Azerbaijan (hardly a name that springs to mind when you think of the world’s great military players) has been able to reduce Armenia’s S-300s into piles of smouldering metal from the air with apparent ease. In fact if anything, the general consensus regarding the S-300/400’s performance now seems to be mainly bemusement at how it hasn’t lived up to its massively over-hyped reputation at all.

    S300 Defended by Tor

  • @vNYCblade
    @vNYCblade5 жыл бұрын

    I keep hearing in the video that the range is 150km or 200km... for S-300 with U classification and above, the range is 300km and change... from some sources on Russian military forums, people who are familiar with the technical details say that there is an additional *upper reserve margin* of ~10%... so that means that in general (nominal), the range is 300km but maxes out at 300 + (300*10%) = 330km... and for S-400 its 400km...not sure about the *upper reserve margin*... but in general, Russian military tech always has a bit extra capability than is generally advertised or known... its a funny thing...since with US tech, what you get is always less than what is advertised... Soo if you only apply a back of the envelope calculation/comparison...then comparing US vs Russian military tech would work the following way... Russian tech capability = What is advertised + (10-15%) ... and with US tech its always = What is advertised - (10-20%)... So yea, reliability and capability wise, Russian tech is a LOT more suitable for REAL WAR conditions... PS: S-300, S-400... Range is NOT the only thing that is important... You also have to remember that these systems are designed to deal with Ballistic missiles as well as Anti-Satellite or NEAR SPACE (thats the term used by Russian military to refer to altitudes of between 100-200km, there are nuances to the type of warhead being used) warfare conditions. From Russian military forums, the general rule of thumb for S-300U and better, the Altitude is 100km (NOMINAL) + 10%... I would also add that when dealing with Russian military tech, you have to think very very technically as its all about MATH... and with US tech its all about HYPE and Advertising...

    That is a very bold statement you make there. It is true that the Russians have the upper hand regarding the SAM systems but it is hard to quantify by how much. Russia surely will not advertise any flaws. Only a direct contact between American and Russian military would show who would perform better.

    Reading comments below I remember how we in Germany realised that Americans are known as well brainwashed patriots who are blind to reality and live in their media-induced dreamworld. For decades we believed to same dreams but a reunion with East Germany, when we inherited Russian weapons it becomes very clear that thanks to American dream we are far behind Russians. For example, our pilots who take over MiG-29 were in for a shock realising how much more capable are than F-16. That led to major USAF embarrassment because on every joint exercised our pilots in MiG-29 were very, very clear winners. It went so far that our MiG pilots challenged the US Top Gun pilots in the official competition which was every time rejected by the USA High Command. Interesting that whole story has been published in Wikipedia for many years until2014 when it was completely deleted. It was the USA which forced out government to sell 23 aircraft to useless and incapable Polish Airforce for, 1$ a piece, officially as a help to poor Poland. After that, our pilots stopped nagging Americans for competition and Americans all of a sudden was very keen to compete with our pilots in Tornados which we bought instead. That much about American objectivity and honesty. It is nice to be a patriot but not a severely brainwashed because it can lead to a disastrous adventure. Think about in how many wars were the US involved and objectively in how many they won hands down taking in account their power? What, not a single one against any nation with more than 2 million population? What a shame for a superpower. or shall we say superpaperpower?

    You mentioned a raft of counter measures against the S300, but failed to mention that the S300 has counter measures for these. For this video to be taken seriously, you cannot just list off offensive counter measures, but also defensive counter measures and to discuss an attack on an isolated S300 system rather than a more realistic integrated air defense scenario is pure propaganda. The missiles have homing capability to lock onto jammers, an aircraft transmitting a jamming signal is in fact acting like a homing beacon beckoning its own demise. These systems also use multiple radars operating in different frequency bands - all have to be jammed concurrently, including ones that are not collocated, but integrated into the air defense system seriously complicating the task of effectively jamming.The S300 system automatically detects anti radiation missiles and deploys active decoys to draw the missiles off target. GPS will be jammed so those glide bombs from 100km will be very inaccurate. Finally, S300 is not deployed stand alone....it is a long range system intended to take out launch platforms (fighters and bombers), there will be multiple short range Pansir systems to deal with cruise missiles, drones and other such weapons. Don't forget that there will also be aircraft defending the sites. While attacking aircraft are fighting the SAM system, they will also have to be fighting defending aircraft. The attacking aircraft will find it hard to concentrate on the S300. Enemy Aircraft will also face jamming, both of their search and target radars as well as their communications. Any one piece of an air defense system can be overwhelmed, jammed, spoofed, as can a system that has not been properly integrated or is incomplete, that is the current problem that Syrian air defenses are facing. The S300 deployments will fill some of the those gaps; much of the equipment Russia provided is to improve integration. Syria will be better defended, but Syria still has insufficient resources for really robust air defense.

    What about pilot techniques for defeating the missile? Notching and dropping chaf - or does that only work on older systems?

    SAM sites are often layered defense system with multiple, overlapping coverage. A country like Syria will have limited number of these most sophisticated weapons whilst the countries that manufacture them will deploy them in numbers. The point of air defense systems is that while they are more expensive than the bombs that destroy them, the planes they down are more expensive than the SAM's. So its worth investing in them and in the long term they will be economically and strategically more viable. The down side to them is that they are defensive weapons and all they do is sit around waiting to be attacked while air power can be deployed in offensive operations away from the regions with these SAM sites. While Russian investment in SAM sites are waiting to be wrecked, American investment in air power is making profit in support of US forces engaged around the globe. The down side to this strategy is that you will have to be constantly at war for it to be sustainable, as evident with the United States.

    To counter all those decoys and swarn attacks on the S300 and S400s they must be using some smaller and high rate of fire air defences like CIWS, laser weapons or some smaller SAM systems to protect the larger system.

    Could the Israelis use artillery to fire on s300 positions and try to deplete their ammo (or at least the pantsr's) before the send in the cruise missiles? IDK if this'll work coz idk the layouts of the defence systems in Syria (Russian equipments included)
