Thanks for this video - man, I struggle with this so much. I'm a pretty good amateur musician (royal conservatory grade 9 piano, french horn in high school, funk bass guitar all the way along just by feel/ear), cajon on a weekly performance basis, and I have good natural sense for rhythm, etc. HOWEVER, I can't hear the difference between a 4 chord and 5 chord. It drives me so crazy, like my win rate is about 50% in guessing which one I'm hearing, even when I'm just figuring out a simple 1-4-5 song. Color seems identical. Both are a fourth away from a tonic in one direction and a fifth away from a tonic in the other direction. Same with 'instability" - it's quality I don't think I'm perceiving in chords they way others do. They all sound pretty stable. Do some people just have holes in their abilities like that, or do you think after 30 years of playing music I might still get it?

Hi Nathan, Thank you for sharing your in-depth comment. The mix-up between the 4th and 5th chords is a prevalent hurdle for beginners, one I personally encountered and have since overcome to discern them flawlessly. From your observation, 'both being a fourth away from the tonic…', it’s evident that your focus is on distances. However, it is not distance but the implied tonality that influences the chord’s feeling. This concept is a fundamental emphasis in our course and our KZread content, but it can be somewhat elusive for many to initially comprehend, leading to some skepticism regarding our teaching approach. Based on my experience, it's very likely that your struggle stems not from recognizing the feeling of the two chords but from establishing and retaining a clear tonal framework in your mind. To provide a practical example to elucidate what's happening: as the chords play, the implied tonal center that you are perceiving shifts in your mind to the 4th or 5th above. Essentially, when you hear the 4th chord, you interpret it as if it were the 1st or the 5th chord of a new tonality. Similarly, when you hear the 5th chord, you perceive it as the 4th or 1st of a new tonality. This shift in perception makes chord's color fuzzy and it's likely what prevents you from discerning the true color of the chords, leading to the statement, 'I can't hear the difference between a 4 chord and a 5 chord.' This is what happens to the vast majority of the students experiencing the issue you mentioned. So, if you keep practicing ‘chord recognition’ tasks it’s unlikely that you are going to fix the core issue. Addressing this challenge involves refining your 'tonic retention' skills. Here is why ‘practicing smarter always beats practicing harder’, as I say in one of my youtube videos. Anyway, I guess you understand that the complexity of this topic warrants a thorough approach, which is why we have developed a comprehensive course on our ear training method, including a wide range of exercises to guide you from the basics to an advanced level. Our methodology is science-based and works no matter your current level. While it does come with a cost, the effectiveness of our program is unparalleled. For musicians, investing in an ear training method that truly works is one of the most valuable investments you can make. For more information, please visit our website: www.useyourear.com/

Nice video. This is virtually identical to how I’ve been teaching people to connect to the notes in a key as well. So it’s cool to see you are doing this as well! The power of music for us is in the feelings it stimulates, and breaking down the sensation conveyed by each note, in the context of the tonality, helps us to be more aware of these impacts. Thanks for this good work you’re doing!

Great video- I like the way you don't attempt to simplify this very complicated subject. I have a very specific color ascribed to most notes- C is blood red, D is bright red, F is green, G is yellow, etc. That is as far as I've taken this concept- I appreciate your intent to be articulate about these very worthwhile subjects- I'll be looking at other videos- thanks

Hi Norman, thank you for your comment. Just wanted to make sure you understood that the "key's color" is not actually a visual color, is a sonic sensation. So you don't have to actually attach a different "visual color - i.e. blue, red, etc." to the notes. You just have to internalize the sonic sensation (stability, instability, sadness, happiness, etc) they assume within the key. Thanks again for your nice comment!

What do you think of Functional Ear Trainer app? That uses some Alain Benbassat method. It looks like this method uses tonal context.

Hi Felix, thanks for the question. In this video here kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZamNxKlpo9Wteto.html at around min 3, you will find me and one of our students talking about the functional ear trainer app, I strongly suggest you to watch it. That being said, shortly I can say that surely that app is better than interval-based exercises but it still has a lot of limitation and neglects many skills that are indeed important and often under-developed in most students. Just check that video to know a bit more about that. Thanks

Hi Leo, we suggest not to describe key's colors by word as they should be experienced as 'sonic sensations' in order for your ear training skills to develop. Let me know if the concept is clear enough. Thanks

Rather than just telling us the knowledge of the skills, it’s more important to tell us the approach or method to achieve those skills.

Absolutely! That's why we have an entire 8-hour long video course, where we laid out our entire science-based, step by step method. The course also includes all the exercises (audio and pdf). It's an all in one solution to fix ear training problems once and for all. You can check out our course here www.useyourear.com/

@@I-is-me You're right, as for now things are only available through our course. Software development is very expensive, and the ear training market is kinda small. I bet you get that these 2 things don't go well together. So it's not that easy to create an app that works well without a lot of budget.

I think he means he is “color deaf”. And I feel the same. Tension? What tension? Like you say: every new chord sounds as a new start, a new tonic.
