    Hi everyone, thanks for watching! I hope this video wasn't too fast-paced - I tried to cut down on the time between each country, since the video would have been much longer. Hopefully it was still enjoyable :)

    Thanks for mentioning Mount Teide. As a spaniard I appreciate the gesture. Btw, It's a fascinating mountain. From the base It's the third tallest mountain on earth after mauna loa and mauna kea in Hawaii. Even though, there used to be a significantly taller mountain there. Mount Teide Is a new cone grown on the site of a larger collapsed volcano. It's the site of several world renowned telescopes (along the nearby caldera de Taburiente), given It's high altitude and low moisture. It houses one of the largest volcanic Tubes in the world, and the largest outside Hawaii. Because of Its isolation and huge altitude gradient the canary islands (along the rest of the macaronesian isles) are one of the richest regions of the world in endemisms. In fact, Darwin allegedly wanted to study Evolution in the canary isles and the Galapagos were his second option.

    I've been there! It's very easy to reach and explore the caldera by car and the landscape is otherworldly. Crazy to think that many people only see Tenerife as a cheap beach destination.

    Wow, Africa really has some beautiful landscapes! These remote lands are gems compared to where I live (Germany), where everything has been bulldozed at least once, it seems. Especially Mount Richard-Molard looks absolutely spectacular, with all the green foliage on its steep flanks. (6:40) Also the picture of Mount Catherine in Egypt looks absolutely breathtaking. (10:50) On the Pico del Teide I already stood myself - an otherworldly landscape and spectacular view in all directions. When there are clouds, you feel like you float above the sea. On the way there it looks like a moonscape with some fascinating plants and animals. (14:30) Mount Karisimbi looks increadibly luscious for a height of 4500m. In other parts of the world, it would be a big rock with glaciers. (15:35). Finally, both Mount Kenya and Kilimandjaro look like something a painter made up. (16:26)

    That was super intersting! I'm not sure why but I never realized just how steep the central western areas of africa were, and how massive the cameroon peaks are. Also curious what the hardest to reach out of these points is? I guess the hardest would probably be Kilimanjaro, but you can't ignore how tough it would be to get to some of the saharan ones. Or countries like CAR and DRC which are just so remote.

    Definitely not Kilimanjaro. The plains around are hospitable and ordinary people climb the volcano due to its quite easy going terrain (altitude is the hardest part). I would say My Kenya is more technically challenging. I'm not knowledgeable but Libya's desert volcano looks incredibly harsh.

    Fun fact: Mount Mawenzi on the slopes of Kili is actually the 3rd highest mountain in Africa, so Margarita Peak on the DRC/Uganda border is actually 4th. The Tanzanian government doesn't recognise Mawenzi as a mountain as this would discredit the claim that Kili is the highest free standing mountain on earth, but with 849m prominence and 5149m height (more prominence than even Lhotse, 4th highest mountain on earth), it is unquestionably a mountain by any logical definition. Also, there is no logical definition of a free standing mountain that would classify Kili as free-standing without a higher mountain also counting as free standing.

    Not 100% sure, but I'd guess that since lots of borders in Africa were drawn along geographic boundaries by colonial powers, they used tall mountain ranges for lots of borders

  • @oliviapg

    @oliviapg

    2 жыл бұрын

    Tall mountain ranges and ridges are commonly used as borders because they're easily recognized from a distance and make it easy to tell which country you are in, as opposed to arbitrary straight lines which require more surveying.

  • @AlexMoreno-zj7po

    @AlexMoreno-zj7po

    2 жыл бұрын

    This will actually be expected to be true fairly commonly, and it was also seen a lot on the state high points vid. The reason is that if a border is drawn on a slope, then the highest point on that slope within the lower country will be on the border. So that trend is more of a result of geometry than of politics, history or any tendency to draw borders along natural boundaries. To make the reason for this more clear, imagine a continent that is single giant perfectly smooth cone, like a big symmetrical gently sloping volcano. Then no matter where you draw the country borders, every country other than the one containing the peak will have it's highest point on a border!
