I don’t understand why the ai optimist think the abundance will be shared equitably when we already have a relative abundance that is hoarded by the ultra wealthy of the global north. When human labor is superfluous we will be expendable and neoliberal oligarchs/plutocrats will use the apparatus of state police powers to implement increasingly harsh control measures. Needing our labor was the only bulwark against total domination.

This is really interesting to watch. I know that when I was in school, just in a low level, tradesmen school, my teacher talked about the 4th industrial revolution in terms of what he knew. It was fully about PLC's, and integration with computers into the industrial process, using controllers in conjunction with robotics to accomplish tasks. Not so much with highly advanced items like are discussed in this video, but purely the marriage of regular industrial processes, with computer control. Of course, this is from the mouth of a man who started his career by installing the first electrical power into factories, well houses, grain towers and the like, in remote post-war agriculutral area's in the US. He saw PLC's as still a developing / growing field that was only just getting more and more integrated, using what he saw as a really 'dumb' system, integrating with the 'smart' system of databses and computer information that the people in office buildings are familiar with. It's really cool, seeing someone with more of an IT, and futurist background talking about the 4th industrial revolution, and its requirements!

This is very interesting! I would have loved if my teachers had thought about and predicted the future I don't think any of my teachers thought very far ahead in terms of technology which most people don't the majority of people i feel like don't even like to think about what impact ai will have on society which is fair it can be kind of anxiety inducing to think about the future. xD

As a 30 year software engineer I am planning for a "near" future where we write almost everything in Rust for both front and back end. None of that Rust will be written by humans however. We need to take declarative programming to the next natural level. Tell the AI what you want done not how to do it. We can then iterate on the 'what' as we search out the best solutions. The idea is like one of a movie producer or director. We yell action and cut while telling the AI players where to stand and how to act until we are satisfied with the output.

I agree. No more humans ever writing code. Programming will become an automated job done by AI. Sure all programmer, Software developers/engineers will lose their jobs, but its what must be done to push technology and humanity forward to better things. Whether Rust is the language the AI uses though i dont know about that.

My worry with that is that in two generations we no longer understand how our own technology works, in four its the work of the Gods. I believe that we have to combine AI & human for us to be able to access vast amounts of information without loss through generations or say goodby to human technological advancement.

Things that facilitate the spread, sharing and curation of human knowledge have given rise to major advances. Exciting times ahead, great coverage! Indeed, I have been pondering about the tremendous implications of an AI with sufficient symbolic cognitive power in science (not there yet and no LLMs, as a computational neuroscientists I am biased towards spiking networks). In a nutshell, I am talking about the ability to model progressively larger computational structures (that is: natural phenomena and their surrounding environments through the lens of computations, eg car traffic, physical systems, chemical processes, medical conditions, ...) with higher accuracy and possibly agency (that is: being able to adequately manipulate and act) will drastically impact the very foundations of our civilization. The capacity of translating any natural phenomena of every domain into valid computational formalisms, such as sufficiently powerful languages (theory of automata) or mathematical spaces (algebraic topology, category theory, ...), will expand the horizons of our understanding to unimaginable regions. Imagine being able to access the rules behind any conceivable system, from politics to economics, from ecology to obscure mathematical conjectures. The danger I feel under-appreciated are here mainly three. 1) our brain is structurally 200'000 years old, same cognitive power as back then, meaning that our understanding of stuff is limited and thus the language through which the AI will deliver the knowledge it has produced will have to be limited as well and information will be lost, the AI will always have an advantage (unless: transhumans). 2) whatever society will emerge (through a lot of blood I presume) will have to deal with our psychological needs bounded to our old brain; this will not be easy to deal with at all in terms of individual political relevance, power structures, familiar dynamics, etc. You covered these aspects quite well though. 3) effectively applying computational understanding to domains like ideology, history and culture (dont ask me how, that's the AI's job) will shake the very bones of society, we will reach frightening levels of collective self-awareness (ego death? type-2 civilization? collective madness?).

4IR also reads like AIR, but fourth industrial revolution makes sense. Will be weird to see what innovations arise from this convergence of technology. Never before has humankind had so much power to shape its own destiny. Maybe we will create simulations first to model their impact before introducing them to society at large.

In the first Industrial Revolution, humans had to learn how to operate machinery to survive. Afterward, in the second industrial revolution, humans had to learn how to manage mass production and distribution systems to stay. In the third one, humans had to learn how to adapt to automation and computerization. In the fourth one,, humans would have to learn how to coexist with intelligent systems, ensuring ethical use while harnessing their potential for societal advancement. Is there any other challenge that you foresee? I think it's an exciting aspect to dive deeper.

When projecting re nuclear fusion (NF), it is important to distinguish between being able to do it at all, and being able to use it as an economical source of grid energy. Wind, solar, wave and geothermal are all practically unlimited sources with zero fuel cost. The problem is that the capital cost of putting in a NF power plant has to beat the capital cost of equivalent output renewables. Even if someone is successful demonstrating NF in the next decade, it will be some time before that capital cost can get lower than renewables that are currently dropping in cost every year. I predict that NF will make great spaceship engines because, there, cost does not matter and fuel mass is critical, but back on Earth, cost is going to set the pace of deployment.

My biggest concern about ai is something I don't see many people talking about. As we get more and more reliant on ai for every aspect of our lives, it's going to become an increasingly big deal if anything should happen to it. Something like a Carrington event (a massive blast of electro radiation from the sun) would cause huge disruption now by knocking out power and internet. He seems to be on track to be right about it. What would humans be able to do if you can mechanically cut out cancerous cells with nanobots, assignment red blood cells with artificial ones so we don't have to breathe very often and could spend hours under water? "In the beginning God created the heaven and earth. And the earth was without form and void. And darkness was upon the face of the deep. And God said let there be light and there was light. And God saw the light that it was good. And God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light day and the darkness he called night. And God saw everything that he made and behold it was good. And God created man and man created machine. And machine created music. And machine saw everything it had made and said: Behold. " Kathy's Song.. VNV Nation. Sound like GPT wrote it. Came out 11 years ago... bit profetic if you ask me.... Goth kids.... 🙄 am I right?

I honestly don't get the insistence on cryptocurrency. Blockchain will certainly have its place, but not in terms of currency. The coming era isn't likely to center around money of any kind. It strikes me as a simple "tech boi" fascination.

Bro..... Telling each other stories was the original purpose of language. When society was small enough that obsessing over exchange value wasn't a thing. University of Nebraska has some good anthropology materials if you are looking for studying it and not just giving us your best guess.

Most contributions to the science was done by Persians. Persia, which is today’s Iran, was invaded by Arabs. Some of the words are Arabic like algebra but the scientists are mainly from Iran and Persian.
