    Thank you! Super thumbs up. Based in what you shared, here's a summary of my understanding: Lean eliminates waste. Six Sigma aims to reduce variation so that the outcome is within the 3 standard deviation from the mean: 3SD x 2 = 6

    Slight correction…six sigma should yield a result where the closest data point to the customer specification is 6 standard deviations away. Thank you for the comment and thumbs up!

    Process improvements....every function has a group of activities that make up processes. Those processes will inherently have wastes and problems. Lean is an approach to reduces the wastes and Six Sigma uses a problem solving methodology to remedy problems. Hope his helps! appreciate the comment and hope you’ve subscribed.

    I was asked to speak in a Job Interview of an example of lean manufacturing which I was a part of. At the end of the interview, the technical interviewer said he was asking about lean in reference to 6 Sigma. I have no 6 Sigma training, yet. I think I still answered his question perfectly. I worked at a facility which could have near zero waste. All reagents must be used, and process could not be interrupted by supply shortages, or a plant shut down would occur. That is about as lean as I can imagine.

    That’s fantastic! Lean and six sigma are different but can be explained with similarities - one is a problem solving methodology and drives variation reduction while the other is focused on reducing wastes. Did you get an offer?

    Hi Chad! Do you think you could speak about the difference between six sigma certification from ASQ and the lean certification from Lean Certification Alliance? Thanks!

    @learnkaizen

    I don’t have experience with the lean certification from alliance but off the top of my head, it sounds like companies are catching on to what I’ve been saying…I’d expect you’d start seeing more lean certifications offered as opposed to six sigma certifications. I have a Black Belt form ASQ so I can tell you that it’s heavy on six sigma and extremely light on lean. I’ll take a look at the alliance cert. you’ve piqued my interest.

    Chad, Just looking for some feedback or guidance. I found your website and KZread channel while looking for information on the Six Sigma ASQ certification. The videos have been really helpful. How do you communicate the benefits of real lean to a company that doesn’t want to hear it? I’ve come across some reluctance to really improve. At times, there are few resources, or the resources don’t have the required experience. Too many lean “buzz” words and not enough actual improvements. I’m just looking for another point of view. Often companies end up with a poor version of lean that fails. Thanks.

  • @learnkaizen

    Thanks for the kind words. Truly appreciate your support; watching my videos and commenting. Unfortunately, convincing leadership to practice lean is tough from the bottom - up...ideally you want leadership engaged and driving lean from the top down. That being said, I've had the best results from implementing small changes that get quick results. Take 5S for example, simple concept and it's difficult for anyone to argue that everyone needs to keep their work areas clean and organized....(don't forget to standardize)...document the before and after with pics and try to tie any improvements to time savings ($$$)....this is how I've "sold" lean in the past...5S is a fundamental. Start simple and build into more complex lean topics like VSM and Kaizen....hope this helps. If lean fails it's because leadership didn't buy into it and therefore drive it........as Lean Practitioners we can sometimes use these simple, quick improvements (like the 5S example) to convince leadership but even then we need to link the improvement to a cost savings in some way.

    I have been blessed to be part of a family that has a significant amount of experience in Industrial Engineering. My father worked for 40 years, my brother has worked for 30 years, and I have just over 20 years of Industrial Engineering experience. That being said, I am part of a team no matter where I go. To be honest, I was not a very good student. I consider myself average and interested in working with others to understand the underlying problems. In general, I serve others and work with others to provide valuable information to help make decisions. Observe, ask questions, gather information, modify, and repeat.I’ve worked with companies that often struggle with Lean or Six Sigma because, at times, there is no discipline. Even knowing all the documented benefits of being lean, there is still reluctance to really change. I often wonder how difficult it was for the early Industrial Engineering pioneers to get their message across. People like Fredrick Taylor, Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, and of course Taiichi Ohno. I’m sure there had to be some frustration in promoting the principles. Obviously, the goal is to stay completely positive, but frustrations do creep in. My theory is to “plant a seed”, move on the best I can, and revisit opportunities when people or managers are more open to change. The only concern is how long it takes to “get it”, and will the competition pass you by.

  • @learnkaizen

    You aren't usually asked about the certification...usually, a resume will reflect results in the form of metrics. Those improved metrics are a result of experience and training. The Green Belt should be a pathway to understand and improve such metrics so they can be reflected on your resume. Not always but the training should help understand these metrics and how to use systematic, proven ways to improve those metrics...(and others) hope this helps. 🙏
