How CI, Kaizen, Lean, 6 Sigma and TPM are linked | Are CI and Kaizen the same?

Ғылым және технология

A viewer asked me to explain the differences and the links between Continuous Improvement, Kaizen and Lean. So in this video, let's take a look at them. And we'll add in Six Sigma and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) into the overview.
They are very much linked, and there are good reasons to think about implementing all of the systems, but not at the same time. That's why it's good to understand the strengths/focuses of each system and how they're linked.

A comment to your comment about when you have unreliable process but have not been doing process improvement for a while, start with PDCA. That's really where the healthcare industry is. Macro problems without having done process improvement for a while, so starting with basic PDCA is where the industry is at as a whole. I also want to add that PDCA can start really small (N=1) and you can use it to ramp up a change idea (N=100). Thanks for the video - well done!

Great addition! Basic PDCA is indeed a very good way to start the improvement culture in your organisation, get some much needed early wins and while doing those first projects you'll have plenty of time to set up a more cohesive program to steer the resources and strategy of future improvement teams. I do like it when organisations coordinate their improvement and problem solving teams, and PDCA by itself doesn't give that structure - but the great thing is that it fits with any CI philosophy.

Thank you Tom! I was expecting this video and thank you for not making this wait too long. I like the way you explained the concepts. Most training material only emphsize where these concepts came from, but you made it very clear what are they and what they focus on. This is the first time I feel I get a clear picture of these concepts. Great video!

Thanks you for sharing that - it’s great to hear people take value from my videos. In fact, this insistent focus on the history of a tool or just the name dropping of what somebody could explain to you (in their course or consulting) was one of the reasons I started this channel. So it’s doubly great that you recognize that same need for explainers and practical knowledge videos 😃
