What is the Difference Between CNC Swiss, Multispindle, and Screw Machining?

Modern screw machines are as varied as the parts they produce. The range of precision machined components is nearly endless, and each type of screw machine has been developed to meet the needs of this constantly expanding range of products.
Some components must be made in such large quantities that the multi-spindle cam automatic screw machine was developed, allowing the work to be distributed among each spindle and reducing the machine time required to produce each workpiece, maintaining tolerances as small as ¼ the width of a human hair.
Swiss CNC-controlled sliding headstock machines efficiently and accurately provide tight tolerances and excellent cosmetics on long, slender, or miniature parts with complex features for any number of applications, including medical, aerospace, defense, and automotive.
In contrast, due to their larger size and rigidity, components of larger diameter are better machined on a CNC Mill/Turn center. The latest designs are capable of turning and milling a component in a single setup, with some machines holding entire magazines of cutting tools that can be utilized completely automatically.
As manufacturing moves fully into the next industrial revolution, the addition of automation coupled with large scale data collection and analysis offers even more potential for advancement. Cox Manufacturing has sought after the most modern and advanced machining technologies for over 60 years and will continue to do so to deliver premier production machined parts.

First time I've actually heard (and seen) in detail the difference between these machines. Also now I know why it's called a screw machine! Thanks!

I intend to use this video next time my customer (internal) asks why I can't do a bazillion turned parts with milled features at a competitive cost on my Hardinge HLV-H toolroom lathe. Thank you!

It was not just US and Swiss that devised this machinery, the British and Germans did a lot too.

Is there an online community for Cnc swiss programmers? Where we can discuss tools, components, troubleshooting, etc..

Spent many years cutting my teeth on Acme-Gridley automatic screw machines... Things have come a long way since those days. I recently purchased monolithic copper bullets for handloading that were turned on a Swiss style CNC machine... Amazing precision and consistency.

I love it when customer ask me why I can't make cheap simple parts on a modern CNC swiss. I can, but the older style davenports ans cam machines will always make them faster and cheaper when doing volume.

Were you able to follow the distinction of these three classes of machines? We produce well over a million components every sIngle week. I know this high volume production environment is different from most CNC shops but this is the technology we need to employ to bring manufacturing back to the US.
