Being a sound guy in my high school theatre, was definitely harder to try to pick up lighting concepts and such. All I really know that it was an ETC ion and it worked okay for what we were using it for. It had the capability of controlling movers and LED’s, but we just never used those.

I hopped right into playing around with a GrandMA2 onPC while using the etc ion 6000 at my school's theatre... Fast forward three years later I'm still learning new things... It's fun to find new tips and tricks but man i didn't know i was jumping right into professional boards...

I kind of jumped in head first, Chamsys MagicQ PC. i started out using the basic board interface then worked up from there with the help of a good friend who has worked with Chamsys for several years. Now I am using a Chamsys Mini Wing and hope to move up to a Chamsys PC Wing Compact. I have gotten to the point that I could use the physical interface to make programming the shows I do easier and quicker. As you said, the bigger the board, the more ways to get to the same end goal, but also more ways to make mistakes. I have been running MagicQ PC for about three years now and I know that there is a LOT still to learn. Taking it slowly but want to go faster. lol

I agree, don’t start on a pro console. I started on a professional console by chance at my church on a Jands Vista S3. recently I ran a show on a GrandMA Full Size and I had never even touched grandMA before and yes it did make that a little easier to learn, but I just ran a show for my schools theatre program on a Jands Stage CL (intermediate/basic, controls up to 24 LED’s) and that was scarier to learn than all of these bigger shows I have recently done lights for. I say start on an lower class Intermediate console so you can master both the software and hardware part.
