Ordered the Beta Starlink about 4 weeks ago and will be testing as soon as it arrives.

I have a fire stick on all 4 TV’s and just pair to hotspot on my phone or iPad, which both have unlimited plans

I download to a 128GB card in my phone from wifi when available and then cast to a larger screen when on the boat.

Good one. Did the same and downloaded "The Office" on my phone and stream to Apple TV onboard even when there is no data available.

Thanks, Jeff for information. I have a 12 volt tv aboard and a mast top the antennae, but not tv license here. So I stream net Felix, google movies, and KZread to my tv via WiFi and a plug in Chromecast.

Thanks Jeff, I use a Chromecast onboard my Albin 30 (and an antenna for the open channels here in Sweden). Using a mobilerouter with "data SIM card" for WiFi connectivity. Works perfect.

I have a HD over the air antenna behind my TV the same size as the TV that gets me all my local channels including news for free and I usually download Netflix movies on my phone before I leave for a trip that way I don't need any data to watch movies or using up my mobile data

I have a pretty nice setup on my 47ft sailboat, combining both livestreaming via cellular and a media server with lots of movies from my collection of DVDs, but without having to keep all the DVDs on the boat. For my cellular connection I use a Mofi 4500 cellular router, that provides a WiFi connection for any device on my boat, in this case a Fire TV Stick plugged into a 32" TV. This allows me to stream from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, or any other Internet based streaming service. For other content I store all the files on a 4Tb hard drive (I keep two identical copies), and plug that drive into a Raspberry Pi running free media server software called "Plex". I can access Plex from the Fire TV Stick over my boat's WiFi (so no wires to run) and have a nice interface from which to choose what to watch. I used to have a TV antenna up the mast, but I got rid of it, and really don't miss broadcast TV at all.

Also a tip: some cell plans like Verizon have unlimited plans but cap your hotspot. If you mirror phone using hdmi adapter you can use the unlimited on phone plan.

What about 12 volt TV’s would that be better then a regular plug in the wall type? 110v?

Generally around the gulf islands cell service is fine. Either for for netflix or a lot of what I could see at home on shaw is available on their apps. Even after my son dowmloading games exceeds the fast data on my phone. You need some way of getting the content to the TV from the cell service. We watch on a laptop so I can just "hot-spot" my phone to create a wi-fi network inside the boat and connect the laptop that way. To a TV you could connect the laptop or get a chrome cast device or use a a Roku TV, all of which could connect to the wi-fi nwetwork. One place you are not going to get much service is Montague Harbour. That place is a bowl. It has seemed to improve a little over the years and I know of a few spots where I can seem to get a signal from the towers on the north end of Saltsring but it is not terribly reliable. Shaw now has relatively affordable unlimited cell plans. Mine is only $25 a month because I have a fairly robust Fibre+ internet service at home. I don't work for Shaw but have upgraded because we are all working from home these days.

I just switched to You tube tv. Can stream using your data plan. Live channels. Unlimited dvr. Cheaper than cable. Might be a fit.

I don't think You Tube TV is available in Canada yet. The US has a number of online service options but in Canada we are somewhat limited for live TV coverage to what the major cable service providers offer.

Thanks Jeff, is another option a WIFI booster to improve connectivity to a local WiFi network?

Hi Dean, yep if there is a good Wi-Fi signal with good bandwidth (big if), then a Wi-Fi extender is a good idea.

How about something on internet access when you're out in blue water? I know KVH has one that will do data and voice over satellite in a fairly small footprint.

Hmmm, doable but the hardware and usage costs are quite high for most of us.

Got a quote for kymeta flat panel sat antenna... usd 30k plus usd 5335 per month for 80 GB of data. Guess I’m going to be at the marina .

Jeff, if I may ask a question on a different topic. I currently have 2x175W and 2x100W flexible solar panels on my boat. The 2x175W panels are wired in parallel to 1 MPPT controller and the 100W panel is wired to another controller. I'd like to add another hard panel to my davits ~300-350W, do I need to add a third MPPT? or is there a way or a product that would allow them all to be on a single controller?

Hi Tom, each controller is sized exactly for max watts, max amperage, and battery voltage. MAke sure you controller can handle an extra 300 watts... doubt it though. My suggestion is to get a dedicated controller, gives you redundancy too.

@@PacificYachtSystems is there any issue with a 100W panel in parallel with a 300W panel assuming the controller can handle it? Also I may switch to lithium in the future would a DC to DC converter with a built in MPPT be a good choice. Battery will be about 380AH, alternator is 60A.

This will be the future. Combined with remote working, my working requires the use of large files so to be able to be in the middle of the ocean with high speed internet will not only make working remote feasible, but offer the ability to have a better income / maintain a full time job.

This video did NOT answer either the title question "What Is the Best Way to Watch TV on My Boat?" nor the question sent in to you by the viewer which is the same as title. The question posed to you literally acknowledged the two options (internet/satellite) and asked which one is best. Instead of answering that question, or giving information about the best conditions for each, you simply gave a very brief overview of the fact you can chose from internet or satellite... O.o Can you make a video that actually answers the question posed, &/or change the title of this video because it is currently misleading.

One suggestion is to get a hotspot for your boat, meaning get a device that converts a cell signal to Wi-Fi so that you can get connectivity on your boat. Many cellular providers offer these hotspot devices. In turn you could also get a cell booster to provided a better cell signal to your hotspot.

In terms of cellular data connection, one assumes an inland position or at very least close to shore is required? In such a case what is the benefit of cellular data over terrestrial OTA broadcast? What effects will the move from 4G to 5G nano-wave have on your solution? If data is essential, what real world benefits are seen on the water from cellular over modern satellite internet?
