What is the best Paper for my Prints? The Question with no correct answer!

This is a daily question in Printer Forums! Of course there is no real answer as this is entirely an individual choice by you the photographer who prints your own images.
Certain images just scream for certain papers and processing. B&W? COLOR? Again it is all about you and your preferences!
Some images lend themselves to a nice soft super smooth Matte paper. Others to a glossy and others yet, to a rough water color surface. Some love a Baryta coated paper. Others scream for a metallic paper!
Best way to find out what works for you? Get paper sample packs from a few paper makers, print some images on them and then sit back and for the next several days, evaluate them. You will then find what pleases you. If none, then try other papers!!! You will find one combo that works the best for your images and your tastes!

    Hi Jose Quite an interesting subject. Yeas ago (10+ years) when I had a canon 9000 with dye inks that finally died with totally clogged channels, I bought many sheets of Ilford gallery classic gloss paper 13X19 inch. Can I use them on my epson 3880 (pigmented inks) , and recalibrate them with the CMKi Photo ? regards Luc

Ilford has no information on this paper on their website, it must be discontinued. I really want to print images of my grandson. Other than just using the included Photo Matte paper P600 own profile there is no actual profile for that paper. You would need to have a custom profile made specifically for it.

    I enjoy using metallic paper from different brands. But it doesn't work with all the subjects. I found that foliage, mountains, trees and people look weird when printed on it. However photos with a lot of sky or water in them look fantastic! I am still learning how to use matte maper and so far my favorite is Photo Paper Pro Premium Matte.

    Hi Jose, great insight on papers. I have a question though. Do you recommend to do a Color Munki paper to profile match on every paper? (I mean the whole print out of targets/readings etc.). I have done it a few times but truly never made a real comparison. Is it truly worth the ink on 'every' paper, even the least used ones? I realize this is a question much like "What's the best paper" question. Thanks for all your great work.

    If you are truly picky you should if your are not then you can use the canned profiles that CANON / EPSON paper come with or the ones other paper manufacturers provide. But you must be using IEM inks for that to work.

    Just got my sample pack + the heavy weight papers and light weight. I really like to Arctic Polar metallic for my astro shots. I also like the Palo Duro SoftGloss rag. Have you ever used that paper? It feels very nice in the hand. Seems similar to the Baryta. With all the papers that come in the kit I can’t print on every one now but do you have any favorite satin, semigloss, luster, or matte papers. I would really like to know what you like. Very useful info. I ordered the Redriver sample pack and love the polar pearl metallic. One thing though, I notices a few small pinhead size spots flaking off both sample prints. I wish I could say. I do not use too many metallic papers. I would directly contact Red River and just ask them. I remember just recently there being a batch of some RR paper that had a few tiny blemishes and they segregated the bad sheets and sold them as seconds by the pack. I would not think Metallic Paper would suffer from flakes coming off. It might just be a few bad sheets that got into that sample pack. Contact them, they will help you out.

No se que modelo de implresora tienes. Pero para usar el systema de ICC perfiles , la verdad es que ningugo existe para ese papel. Precisioncolors tiene perfiles gratis pero solo usando sus tintas que venden.

Excelente ejercicio.

I recently decided to print on mat paper I switched the black from PK to MK ink and ran a nozzle check I only got 7 color only bar check just 2 blacks all good but I thought, I would get 8 colors one being the mat black. I waited a few hrs and ran the nozzle check test and still only 7colors. Is this right or do I have a clogged nozzle (MK) ? Hope you can help, Gareth

    Hey Jose, been watching a lot of your videos, very useful information and you are some expert on the subject, I wanted to know if you could give me a more concrete opinion when the goal is to print colorful(maybe ocasional B&W) aerial/landscape/panoramic photos, do you have a guess on what paper would work best? Also what is the best budget/quality paper print brand you recommend, I mean cost-benefit?

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    7 жыл бұрын

    AH... the question that simply has no answer. Out of the hundreds of papers available, I can not even begin to tell you what the best would be for any subject. Any good semigloss mid to heavy weight paper will produce great results on the type of images you suggest. Currently Red River has very good papers and a very reasonable price. But remember that printing at home and Cost Effective simply do not go together. Other than using cheap papers and inks, you will be giving up to much in terms of overall print quality. But that's just my opinion.

  • @homerdj0nt

    @homerdj0nt

    7 жыл бұрын

    I should go for mid weight, anything that would help lower the cost of the printing, as I saw you talking with someone on another video of you, when you're trying to make it a business and sell your prints, the client just don't understand quality, so you must go for price, but I want to do that without compromissing a certain level of quality, just build my "quality standard" at a affordable price, that's why I asked you for a more likely budget photo print paper. Do you think I can go for anything more cheaper than Red River?

  • @homerdj0nt

    @homerdj0nt

    7 жыл бұрын

    I get also what you're talking about printing home vs cost effective, but the reality as my calculator says so, with time it will become a good investment. I'm on the road also to buy the printer which should be the P600 or Pixma 100... but as I've been looking into panoramic prints the P600 should be the only way, as it supports paper rolls, also you have an advice on a budget paper roll brand?

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    7 жыл бұрын

    Red River is about the lowest cost there is. If you want to do glossy you can go to COSTCO. They Glossy letter sized paper is like #19 for 150 sheets and it is very good. STAPLES Matte paper is also very good.

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    There is no such thing as budget roll paper. You can try ebay for off brands but really there is not way to cheap out when it comes to this. The biggest hassle with the P600 is finding 13" paper in 2" diameter core. They are almost non existent.

    I had the Canon 9500 Mark II and the first time I printed a canvas, strictly following the directions using the rear tray, etc., it jammed and had to take it in for service. I really want to try it with this one, but I'm SCARED to death to try it again. I saw where you printed an 8 x 10 canvas with the Pro 100 from the "normal" tray with no problem. First of all I don't SHOVE anything at my viewers. I did show MANY other papers. but hey what's really funny is that MANY others actually love RR papers. However I do hope someday you find a good paper that will hopefully please you! But please describe what you mean by Crap!
