What is the best car wax? We test sealants, waxes, hybrid spray waxes, and ceramic products!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome back to a wax comparison test in Round #2 of the wax forensics. As in the first round we will test car waxes, car sealants, polymer sealants, spray waxes, spray sealants, hybrid waxes, silica sealants, and more! I expect to do several additional rounds of forensic detailing to determine the best car wax of 2019.
I've created a page to track the progress. On this page I will leave a matrix of results for each round and cumulative 2019 results. I also added breakdowns with notes for each product in each round.

The clumps in the Colonite 845 is totally fine. I have been using that stuff for 25+ years along with Colonite Super Double Coat wax which is without a doubt one of the longest lasting traditional type waxes. The one-two punch is the Colonite Super Double Coat topped with their 845. Very good durability and gloss. Brilliant Shine Detailer from SONAX is another very good one. It says "Detailer" but it's a spray sealant with long durability and beading like crazy. Also a good value. You can't go wrong with anything from Sonax (Made in Germany). BSD is not super slick, but it is the most durable probably of the ones you tested. That stuff is crazy durable. I do love Opti-Seal too. It's so easy to apply and remove. Absolutely no haze. 1 spritz per panel, can also be a drying aide. It's a very good product. I would say about 3 months durability but really it could be infinite if you just use it after every wash as your drying aide. Never tried Poxy or Cure yet but have tried the others. Just throw the silver can of Klasse in the trash. It's far far far far past it's prime. The secret to that one is to apply it so thin that you literally can BARELY see it. Then remove it quickly. It is a little easier that way. The Klasse RED bottle is the star of those two. It's a good glaze and chemically removes oxidation and will fill in light swirls as well. It's great if you use it and then top with a good sealant or wax and you'll have a great looking vehicle.

@ 5:44 "oh no, what have I done?!" Dimitri, love the video. I have had the same bottle of Opti-Seal since around 2015 or 2016. I could never get the water behavior I was expecting out of it. I tried spray and wipe, I tried applying with thr foam applicator heavy, and thin, then wipe, etc, etc. The last summer I polished my car with Optimum Hyper Polish, and the stuff beaded like crazy.... WTH? I got even better results when I applied and let flash off, and only wiping away any excess after the majority of it flashed away. I also kept it dry for at least an hour. I've also come to realize that not all products are designed to bead, and that it's not necessary for for the paint. I am still testing Opti-Seal in real work conditions. I have on my car and my mom's car. Currently going through the winter months where she uses the touchless wash, and we have salt and brine on the roads. So far so good. I did test Optimum Car Wax over the summer. Compared to CarPro Gliss, it might not have thr longevity of beading, bit it sure as heck didn't get water spot etching like the Gliss did! Once I exited the cult of beads I'm a lot less anxious about maintaining my vehicle.

  • @DmitrysGarage

    @DmitrysGarage

    2 жыл бұрын

Haha yea I definitely felt that way at that moment. Was very confused why it wasn't coming off. I may have to give Optimum Hyper Polish a shot, that sounds pretty good! I am testing the Optimum Car Wax very soon. As far as beading vs. sheeting, in an ideal world you'd pick sheeting because it leave less droplets to leave water spots. In the real world the problem is that sheeting is a result of using water's cohesion to pool it together in one big puddle. This means that sheeting doesn't have the same self cleaning and lubricity effect as hydrophobic surfaces that cause beading. In practice hydrophobic products that push water off (cause beading) will do more for self cleaning and lubricity when washing to prevent scratches. Though the downside is the water etching and spots. I don't know of a way to make a truly sheeting product that has the same positive and protective properties of beading products.

    1. You used tooooo much collinite 845. All you need, especially for that size of panel you did, is about 3-4 dabs on to the pad. Just hold the pad at the mouth of the bottle and flip the bottle over quickly so that the product just touches the pad. 2. You need to wait anywhere between 10-15mts for it to haze. Do the finger swipe test to see if it is ready and THEN remove and buff to a shine. 3. Keep the videos coming. You are doing a good job with your reviews. Especially when you compare products.

A bit of detail spray in a Micro fiber towel would remove the Klasse easily. Klasse also sheets more than it beads, if you apply Klasse next to bare paint you will see the difference. @@DmitrysGarage I've tried many products over the last 25 years some are really good some are hype. For all out durability obviously ceramic coatings can't be beat, For a good ballance of durability and look Klasse produces the the best of both worlds for me, nice depth and it's good for at least 6 months. However it's really not a product for everyone, you have to know how to use it to get the best results. Klasse was also designed to sheet not bead to prevent water spots, because of this most think the sealant has failed when it hasn't, it's a different animal than the super hydrophobic stuff people are used to. If you let Klasse set up detail spray has no negative effect, I will often top it with a paste wax, liquid wax products will always break down sealants because of the higher solvent content. Klasse SG is best applied over the AIO product, it was designed to be a two step product, it helps durability, plus it makes removal easier. Have you ever tried Zaino products? You can layer it indefinitely if you know what you're doing. it's optically clear so it creates a candy coated look, but won't create depth because it's clear, so the paint needs to be perfect, it's also full of UV inhibitors. Zaino has the best wash I've ever used and the detail spray is second to none. When I was mobile detailing I liked Poor Boys products as you could used the compounds and polishes in direct sunlight if need be. Have a good one! I do like your content.

@@dc9mm2 Right now the bottle instructions for AIO say that you could optionally top off with the glaze to add durability. Inversely the bottle of Glaze says it can be applied without the AIO. The glaze similarly says you can use it on its own and get up to 12 months of durability. I'm sure a lot of users do it the way you're describing, it definitely makes sense for a practical application to a car. It's similar to how people stack Collinite products. I have been using Klasse twins for over a decade and I'm sure some others have as well. The true test of durability for the Klasse twins is SG after AIO. I know you're testing per individual products and combinations of things could be endless but have you did a durability test of the Klasse aio + SG in combination when they're married as they were originally intended? I'm very curious to results, being a lot older now and with less time I want highest durability first and foremost with my driver oriented cars I am considering getting into ceramic/graphene paste on and all these other new products. Thank

Thanks for watching and commenting. I do think sprays are a bit part of the future market as well due to the ease of application and performance they're able to yield these days. For Klasse SG/AIO combination, I have not tried it as the products do indicate they can be used separately, but I will probably test it out in the future when I expand to combinations/toppers. Ceramic products seem to vary widely, some are really good, while others aren't any better than traditional polymers. I would suggest testing out a few or looking at the results I've posted. Graphene similarly seems to vary. I did one test with an Adams spray that hit >100 washes on the durability test, then another that did like 1/3 of that from a different company.

Did you read the instructions with any of these in regards to application? Because you used about 5X more than needed on the Car guys product, or was it purposely or a specific reason?

  • @DmitrysGarage

Thanks for watching. My goal was to follow the instructions as written on each bottle. However, for this kind of testing I really can't spend enough time with each product to learn the best way to do it. I did publish a table on my site (link in description) and you can just sort the columns and work out your own scoring if you don't like some of the testing parameters. If this was over applied it should have only affected ease of application score wise. Also keep in mind since I'm working with tight areas, I can't do a wide full throttle spray or it will go everywhere.

Nice video. I think there’s a lot of fake hype and even misguided fan boys out there for paint care products so it’s good to share some relative objective test results. The fact some old school products scored fairly well says a lot about all the hybrid this and ceramic that often being just fake marketing hype. As for the Turtle Wax scratch remover you should thoroughly wash that panel section with some dish soap and recheck the results. A lot of swirl and scratch remover products are also fillers. They’re not removing scratches so much as temporarily hiding them. The scratches largely come back after a few washes. It’s like putting Armor All on scratched plastic. To really remove them you usually need a time consuming process of progressively finer abrasives and that assumes you don’t accidentally go through the clear coat on modern finishes.

Thanks for watching! I try to be as objective as possible, but of course we all have some biases. I found a few products I really liked weren't that good. As for the Turtle Wax, it is a pretty heavy abrasive. I wouldn't recommend dish soap as they tend to mask, there are decontamination/strip soaps specific for this purpose. I understand how to remove scratches, as I was comparing the Turtle product to compound/polishes specifically made for multi-step paint correction. They do indeed cut the paint when used with a polisher like the Flex which i was demonstrating in the video.

Dmitry's Garage I wasn’t recommending dish soap for regular car washes, just as a way to expedite the removal of the fillers in scratch removal products to see their true result on the finish. One wash with dish soap might be roughly the same as four washes with a car wash solution. Using alcohol or other products also would be helpful. But the main point is regular washings , and even rain water, will often eventually make most of the swirls and scratches re-appear with many products as they don’t remove the problems they mostly just temporarily hide them.

@@sharedknowledge6640 I understood what you meant. You're wrong, dish soap should never be used. They usually contain other ingredients that mask the surface, i.e. shining agents. There are decontamination soaps and even isopropyl alcohol used specifically for this purpose. I understand you think this turtle product is a filler, but it is a heavily abrasive compound. You can feel the grit in your fingers.

Dmitry's Dmitry's Garage well, I don’t remember all of it but an example of one is the Klasse Glaze and sealant . U said u left it a few minutes to cure. It actually takes more time than just a haze. It’s easier if u let it sit for 20-40 mins. Also, u use a quick Detailer and spray it on the towel to remove it if it’s a pain to get off. U also applied way to much. I noticed this of others u used as well. The Klasse all in one also does better under the Klasse glaze n seal(thus Klasse Twins). The Collinite need to be melted and then it’s ready to apply. But it was an interesting video to watch and I thank u for making videos as they are helpful and makes us love detailing.

@@DetailingBreakdown Thank you for the detailed reply, I truly appreciate it and the time it took to reply. One thing I would point out is that my reviews are tailored towards users, not professionals. Personally I have various ways of using products that are not necessarily obvious. For instance you mentioned melting down Collentie, but nothing about Collenite's packaging suggest melting it down when following instructions. My reviews follow the details on the bottle. I've re-tested the Klasse products since, just to get new gloss numbers, and they're still hard to remove. Also cure to me means after removal, curing is the time it takes before you can wash/test. I could have used detail spray, but detail sprays often contain other polymers that will impact the testing. For example Sonax Detail Spray is a sealant in its own right. Klasse also doesn't specify how much time, it just says to a haze. It may help waiting a lot longer, but some waxes are actually harder to remove if you wait more. For the purpose of my reviews I can't keep testing it all different possible ways beyond what the bottle suggests.

Dmitry's Garage I appreciate u follow directions on bottles. But sometimes you have to think outside the box. As I am a tester for many products and in the industry as well. Myself and many others have found other ways or techniques that are far more beneficial when using these products. Even for the DIY person who may not be a pro, easier instructions or better insight on these products would be more helpful. Just a suggestion, use the products a few times and get some tips and tricks under your belt to further help the new people learning. If I wanted to know about a product, it would be more helpful to me if the mentor had already used it and knew a little more about it. Just my opinion. Keep up the good work.

I HATE HATE HATE Klasse Sealant. I used it 10+ years ago a couple of times and every time it was a pain to remove. I still remember the car I was trying to get it off too. If you dare let the sun touch it forget about it, throw the car out. As far as I know the formula hasn't changed since the 80s. Two spritz of turtle wax hybrid is easier to apply and provides better protection.

My focus so far has been on the enthusiast segment, which tends to include products not sold at brick and mortar stores. However, I will be including brick and mortar products in future tests, and some products like Car Guys (also tested in this video) are starting to appear in stores, my local Autozone carries the brand. If there are specific products you want me to test let me know and I'll add them to the queue.

I think it’s best that he doesn’t know everything as most consumers will obviously know a lot less so without doing a technical course on detailing it’s all about how easy the product is to use right off the bat. The professionals will have their own products with their owns standards which will also have much less margin for error.

While I appreciate your hard work, I do think gloss readings are a bit silly. Everyone knows that these products don't actually add gloss, but things we perceive as gloss such as saturation. Often the higher the gloss reading the less the paint has actually been optically improved by the wax or coating.

This is definitely a point I frequently make in my videos. The point of continuing these tests in my current videos is that a big drop in reflected light is not desirable. Ideally a product provides both the greatest optical improvement and minimal loss in light reflection. You do start to notice 5-10GU drops as appearing less mirror like and overall bright/shiney. You can see this with products like the last coat, which lost over 10 gloss units on average, but still had a deep wet look.
