Hosted by filmmaker Yujiro Seki, Carving the Divine TV is a series of Q&A sessions with Buddhist scholars and practitioners. These Q&A sessions explore the basic concepts of Buddhism and the history of Buddhism so that when viewers finally watch Carving the Divine they will get the maximum value of the documentary. Today, we will be talking about Tendai Buddhism with a special guest Rev. Monshin Paul B. N. Naamon. That’s right! We have another practitioner’s episode! Tendai Buddhism is one of the earliest Buddhism sects in Japan that went beyond the Buddhism of novelty and aristocracy. Out of Tendai, many subsequent sects of Japanese Buddhism emerged! Yes, without doubt, it’s one of the important Buddhist sects in Japan… Even today!
We will be asking important questions such as:
What is Tendai Buddhism? What is the brief history of Tendai Buddhism?
Why is Tendai Buddhism called syncretic Buddhism?
Who is Rev. Saicho (Dengyo Daishi)?
What is the difference between Shingon and Tendai?
What is lotus sutra and why is it important?
What is the most important Buddhist deity in Tendai Buddhism?
What is the Tendai view of Butsuzo (Buddhist statuary)?

I have really enjoyed your videos. I have watched your videos about Shingon and this one so far. I think it's great that you're doing videos in Spanish. I practice Tibetan Buddhism in Memphis, Tennessee - in the middle of America's Bible Belt!

This is so informative and eye-opening (though for both of you, it may be very basic). Can you make this as a series? Rev. Monshin, you are so impressive. Thank you!

It's interesting how in English Wikipedia Tendai and Tiantai are treated as different but related schools while on Japanese and Chinese Wikipedia they are treated as the same. The Japanese Wikipedia clearly states that Tendai Buddhism originates in China.

thanks for this video. would love to hear more about Tendai. Just one thing - doesn't Shodaigyo practice in Nichiren Shu include silent meditation as well as odaimoku? So it technically is not a "single practice school"?

Thank you so much for an intelligent question. I cannot speak for Rev. Naamon. But, what I can say is as much as this is a very comprehensive introduction video about Tendai, it is still an introduction video. In other words, he simplified the complex subject so that it would be easier for anyone to get a big idea. In other words, if you throw the details at people, in the beginning, they will get lost and miss the big picture. While I agree with you that I do not think Nichiren Shu only does Odaimoku, but I do believe their main practice is Odaimoku. The lotus sutra and Odaimoku are the most important things. I think it was a great introduction video that would like to learn about Tendai in relation to other Japanese Buddhist sects. In my view, it is more important to get the orientation first before going into the details. Thank you so much again. www.carvingthedivine.com

@@CarvingTheDivine I understand. From the big picture perspective, it is true that Tendai has many many practices.
