"What is Nichiren Shu?" - With Kanjin Cederman Shonin (SUB: SPA.)

To learn more about the documentary film "Carving the Divine - Buddhist Sculptors of Japan" : www.carvingthedivine.com/
Hosted by filmmaker Yujiro Seki, Carving the Divine TV is a series of Q&A sessions with Buddhist scholars and practitioners. These Q&A sessions explore the basic concepts of Buddhism and the history of Buddhism so that when viewers finally watch Carving the Divine they will get the maximum value of the documentary.
In this special episode, we have a rare opportunity to dive into the heart of Nichiren Shu. Nichiren Buddhism has many variations and because of its diversity, it can be a difficult tradition to understand. Out of all the variations, we are talking about Nichren Shu today as we believe it’s the best way to open up a discussion for this amazingly profound tradition. We have a seriously incredible Nichiren Shu practitioner who will take us up on this challenge. Please let me introduce you to Kanjin Lederman Shonin! Together, let’s learn Nichiren Shu, one of the most important Buddhist sects of Japan!
We will be asking important questions such as:
What is Nichiren shu? What is the core teaching?
What is Lotus Sutra?
What is nam myoho renge kyo?
Who was Rev. Nichiren? What was his contribution to Japanese Buddhism?
In Nichiren Shu, what is Gohonzon?
How does Nichiren Shu view Butsuzo (Japanese Buddhist statuary)? Is it okay to worship Butsuzo?

Kanjin Cederman Shonin was born in Wheatfield, NY. When he was 18, he became a Buddhist monk in the Chinese Tien Tai tradition. At the age of 23 he moved to Toronto where he met Tsukamoto Shonin, head minister of the Toronto Nichiren Shu temple. Tsukamoto Shonin gave Cederman Shonin a copy of the Lotus Sutra. Then Shami Cederman became convinced that the Lotus Sutra was the highest teaching of the Buddha. One week before he was scheduled to move to Taiwan for the rest of his life, Shami Cederman left the Tien Tai temple and began to study with Kanto Tsukamoto Shonin. Kanjin Shonin studied with Rev Tsukamoto for 13 years. In 2007 Rev Cederman attended Shingyo Dojo at Mount Minobu in Japan where he completed his studies and became a Nichiren Shu priest. In June 2010 he attended Reidan training in Tokyo, and in November 2010 he attended Aragyo at Onjuin in Chiba, Japan. Kanjin Shonin is Abbot and head priest of 長栄山円教寺 Choeizan Enkyoji Temple of Seattle and 祥栄山円教寺 Shoeizan Enkyoji Buddhist Temple of Rochester and the 円教寺 Enkyoji Network of Nichiren Shu Buddhist Temples and Sangha World Wide.

This explanation of Nichiren Diashonen's life reminds me of the historical Jesus. He was the son of a poor laborer who quarreled with the aristocratic religious class of his day and taught that spirituality was for the regular person (ie "the kingdom of god is within you"), and was persecuted by the religious government of his day.

I was 5 years ago le when my mom became a Buddhist via NSA in San Francisco. I have had a complicated relationship with SGI my entire life. I am now 51 years old. I chant and do gongyo. I have always loved and wanted to study nichiren Buddhism and his teachings but always had issue with everything being ikeda centric. I would love to talk to former SGI members who feel this same way. I hold nothing against SGI members….my mom and aunt I love dearly, I just feel very drawn to Shu and would like to hear from like minded people. I am considering looking into Shu in San Francisco. I believe reverend McCormick is the person in San Francisco. It is inspiring to hear of other SGI or former who love the teachings and practice of Nichiren but struggle with the organization of SGI.

Hello.I am from Japan and practice Nichiren Shonin's buddishm from so long long ago.Namu Myoho Renge Kyo has the power to elevate the good energy of people and erase their bad energy. However, What is important is Namu Myoho Renge Kyo cannot be to understood through LOGIC.It is ONLY by earnestly CHANTING that the power of Namyohorengekyo can be really EXPERIENCED.Just believe in Nichiren Shonin's heart to understand his teachings taught.🤗

Many chant the Daimoku but have forgotten the Master's heart. Very few practice shakubuku because they want to be liked and admired. Shoju is an easy to practice way and not appropriate in Mappo (except towards like minded individuals)... “‘The monks [whom you are speaking of] preach various teachings, but still they are not able to utter “the lion’s roar.”... Nor are they able to refute and convert evil persons who go against the correct teaching. Monks of this kind can bring no benefit either to themselves or to the populace. You should realize that they are in fact shirkers and idlers. Though they are careful in observing the precepts and maintain spotless conduct, you should realize that they cannot achieve anything. [Then a monk raises “the lion’s roar.”...] Those who break the precepts, upon listening to his preaching, are all enraged to the point where they attack him. This preacher of the Law, though he may in the end lose his life, is still worthy of being called a person who observes the precepts and brings benefits to both himself and others.’” -- The Opening of the Eyes

@@illarraza Hello. So how about you? Who said i went to a temple? You said to : You dont deserve to be a priets.Did Nichiren Shonin Said so? I know Nichiren Shonin said any one is free to become a buddha. Well "Rely upon the True Law; do not rely upon persons" This is the basis of Buddhism.Nichiren Shonin continues to preach and show us the Law of NamuMyohoRengeKyo. Therefore, based on the concept of a Law-centered faith rather than a charismatic-centered faith, such as those beliefs based on Shakyamuni Buddha, God or other people or deities,we revere Nichiren Dai Shonin as the true bodhisattva for the latter Day.He is one who transmitted the true Law; His life is a living example of living according to the Lotus Sutra. Yet,it must be said, he is not a Charismatic prophet to be idolized or woreship. Although Shakyamuni Buddha preached the teachings of the Lotus Sutra, he did not practice or conduct himself accordingly. He was not a person who practiced the Lotus Sutra. He preached the doctrine, but could not prove it by means of practice and enlightenment. Consequently, those people who believe in Buddishm came to think that nothing would change in the Latter Day, so They continue to woreship Buddha as the object of woreship. What people have not realized, or have ignored, is the conversion to a new system of Thought in the spiritual world. Which is precisely what Buddha wanted to convey to us. Consequently, people have forgotten and repudiated the meaning of the Latter Day of the Law.

@@illarrazaAnd WHY THE LOTUS SUTRA IS SUPERIOR. The Lotus Sutra preaches the Following; All living things are equal. All living things (all existence, not just human beings) posses a life equal to that of the Buddha's life. Everyone can attain enlightenment by believing in the Lotus Sutra, including evil persons, women and those whose lives manifest the worlds of Learning and Realization, as well as the world of Animality.

More and more I'm beginning to think that Nichiren Buddhism is not just a Mahayana school, but it is a Vajrayana school that has "reformed" or reconstituted itself on the basis of Mahayana principles and teachings.

  • @Yabyummy2000

Nichiren was a Tendai Buddhist. Tendai Buddhism was the Japanese version of the Tiantai school. The Tiantai school was one of the preeminent forms of Chinese Mahayana Buddhism founded in the 6th century. The Tendai school was founded in Japan in the beginning of the 9th century and from the very beginning it had incorporated esoteric forms of Buddhism that had been transmitted into East Asia in the 8th century. So basically Nichiren Buddhism IS the offspring of an esotericized form of East Asian Mahayana Buddhism. What Nichiren did was to create a streamlined form of Tendai practice that was directly rooted in and expressive of faith in the Lotus Sutra.

Absolute Wonderfulness (Myo) and Comparative Wonderfulness (Myo) Tientai the Great of China classified the teachings of the Buddha as follows:* The Five Periods are as follows: Flower Ornament Period (華嚴時) Āgamas Period (阿含時) Vaipūlya (方等時) Prajñā (般若時) Lotus-Nirvāṇa Period (法華涅槃時). The Eight Teachings are subdivided into two groups: The Fourfold Methods of Conversion (化儀四教) Sudden Teaching (頓教) Gradual Teaching (漸教) Secret Teaching (秘密教) Variable Teaching (不定教) The Fourfold Doctrines of Conversion (化法四教) Tripitaka Teaching (三藏教) Shared Teaching (通教) Distinctive Teaching (別教) Complete Teaching (圓教)[11] "The word “wonderful” in the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Law has two meanings. One is comparative myō, or wonderful, which indicates refuting the rough teachings and revealing the wonderful teaching. The other is absolute myō, which indicates opening up the rough teachings and merging them in the wonderful teaching." - Nichiren We can find literally find all the teachings of the Buddha from the Flower Ornament teachings ("The mind is a skillful painter", Yogacara or mind only) to the Theravada (Four Noble Truths, Eight Fold Path, Precepts Impermanence, Dependent Origination etc) to the Prajna Paramita or Heart Sutra teachings (The Two Truths, Temporary Existence and non-substantiality) and others of the Five Periods and Eight Teachings. For example, the Theravada precepts are taught in Chapter 14 and Dependent Origination is taught in Chapter 7. Non-substantiality is taught principally in Chapter 2. Here we see the the absolute myō, which indicates opening up the rough teachings and merging them in the wonderful teaching. Chapters 11 and 23 for example, we see the comparative myo which indicates refuting the rough teachings and revealing the wonderful teaching. These are the two aspects of the Lotus Sutra. Thus you can see how we can incorporate all the teachings of the Buddha in the faith and practice of the Lotus Sutra. This is the absolute wonderfulness. A child who in the 5th grade thinks that he knows all there is to know about mathematics is gently (or forcefully) scolded by his learned PhD teacher for the sake of the child's development. This is an example of comparative wonderfulness (Myo). *From wikipedia, the Five Periods and Eight Teachings.
