Here's one thing to remember, if you're going to carry a knife. Check your local laws regarding the carrying of bladed weapons. In some places you can carry something as big as a machete or even a sword, while in others (LA city and county for example) knives with blades no longer than three inches. In Texas, blade length varies on the age of the person and activities and locations. In the US, butterfly/balisong and ballistic/switch blade knives are illegal according to federal law, from what I've read. However, I've also read that the latter are legal in Texas, which causes a problem because federal law trumps state law. So, if you're gonna carry it might be best to contact your local SO or PD or an attorney, because if you ever get stopped and they find one on you and depending on the cop you could get off scot-free or face some serious time, even if you never use it in an altercation.

This is great stuff. Many struggle with these concepts and what habits to engrain, myself included. Between traditionalists who seem to believe that no modern "MMA" training or techniques work in real life. Just the techniques the traditionalists have that can't be practiced with live sparring. Or, many newer Ju-Jitsu/MMA guys also limit themselves by just training to a sport and being more of an athlete at times than a Martial Artist.

Very nice video and very useful techniques. It is also very important that you mentioned that people must have some basic knowledge of "sport" principles in order to make the dirty techniques work. Otherwise, people would start the usual "self defence" crap arguments, that is, insisting that no matter how good you are in striking/grappling, one or two dirty techniques can completly nullify a whole proven fighting system like thai, bjj or wrestling. Truth is, that if people have no experience in fighting against resistance, they would not even have the time (or instinct) to think that they can bite/gouge/or pull out a knife. The moment the fight will start, they would just feel a guy on their legs and next think they know they will be on the ground and then mounted. So, first you must get physical attributes and principles by PLAYING combat sports and THEN take into consideration the dirty tactics. This is proved by the fact that you need some years to become good in fighting against resistance in combat sports but only few lessons to learn what to look out for in a possible street fight.

Pit Master, could you do a video specifically on ways to carry and access your knife in a fight ( and why you might) as well as different ways to stop the other guy from doing so? I've seen sleeve carry discussed in classes before, and the draw was shown from a body lock or double leg, with the reasoning being that a trained grappler can be really good at keeping your hands away from your waist

I think it was the late Frank Trejo who said this, but he said that back in the day in the advanced classes Ed Parker would conceal a training knife in his uniform jacket. He said that when students would ask him about doing grappling in the street he would let the them demonstrate a move (either standing and on the ground) and as they were trying it on him would "stab" and "slash" at their vital organs to let them know that was always a possibility. By the way, Parker was a judo black belt as well and Trejo said would teach him and select group of others throws so he wasn't completely anti grappling.

1:this is sort of misleading in that it seems to suggest that grappling is the "wrong" answer to a knife attack when the truth is there is no RIGHT answer to knives... escape and/or deploy a firearm are the recommended methods (yes i know about the blablabla rule, shooting a knifeman as he comes at you is still better than knife fighting with him or trying to disarm him once he gets there) but when you dont have those options, clinching IS the defense. Your (unarmed) options are A) go for an instant KO B) establish some kind of control over him C) put space between you. Thats it. The danger of instant KO is simple: do you want to get into a boxing match with a guy who has a knife in his hand? That may be the right answer in some specific situation but its not better as a general option than going for some type of control. Id guess control is probably better, generally. So yes, you adapt your grapplig to the knife scenario...but no, you do not regard grappling as the "wrong" way to defend against a knife. 2: Trap and Roll is the first mount escape we learned in my BJJ class. Maybe there are other classes that first teach shrimping alone but i mean "trap and roll" is universal BJJ. So is controlling hands and arms. Does that sometimes collapse in actual fights? Yea but so does everything else. Might as well say you cant throw a punch in a fight because it leaves you open to counter punches while youre punching...its true in its own way but only partly true. 2: Bite his chest? Lol...sorry but ithink that is just ridiculous. Unless youre goddam Vlad Tepes, the ONLY thing thats gonna do is piss him off, lol. Youve proven why people should train grappling withthis one because if biting his chest is all you have left then youre gonna die. Should have trained in jiujitsu instead of being contemptuous of it; if you knew some grappling then youd have way more effective options than biting. 3: from side control, if he doesnt do the correct defense with his arms then its an easy keylock (americana or kimura) Ok, he bites you... you rotate his humerous out of its socket... you POP his shoulder. Now that he has got only one arm, you can do whatever you want to him. 4: knife from side control is a legit threat. Got to really drill the "expect them to reach for their weapon" view into your brain. Knife in general is serious threat. I do appreciate this video for driving that point home ;-) 5: while youre biting his calf muscle off (which youre not actually going to do) he will poke out your eyes, because hes got dominant position. Then he will break your arm and again, once your arm is broken youll be pretty much helpless. You still lose, lol 6: using a knife against his arms will, or can work. Thats legit choke defense for the street but id mention that unless you know how to defend the choke (without a knife) youre probably going to sleep anyway. Its literally only a few seconds. But maybe not. If you catch a guy in RNC you better watch out for the knife. I do give you that one. 7: yes, you need to learn grappling. I agree. 8: bite vs keylocks from guard is essentially the same argument as the bite vs keylocks from side control. Biting is not an effective kimura defense and youll pay for it with the connective tissue in your shoulder. And what if hes wearing a thick shirt, btw? 9: great video, thank you. Many things to think about, thank you for that. -Grappling- fighting in self defense has a lot more things to worry about than -grappling- fighting in a competition. Knives being at the top of the list. TRAIN TO EXPECT THE KNIFE!

The throws in jujutsu/judo are designed to control the weapon hand and put oneself into side control. Furthermore, side control was preferred because because it allows oneself to do a heavy pin and still use both arms and both legs to dislocate and disarm. you can grab one or two of his fingers when he slaps on rear naked choke and he's done. that's why small joint locks are banned in MMA. as far as biting the calf armbar defense goes, unless you are a part alligator, he will snap your elbow before you tear a chunk out his calf and he lets go. he might even die from an infection later on because the human bite is nasty, but in the meantime your arm will be crippled forever or worse he might jump back up and kick your head in after he snaps your elbow

There is always the debate, which in my mind should not exist: Which is better to train for the streets, Sport MA or Self-Defense MA. Often I see people take sides and make fun of the other side. IMHO this is wrong. I am going to offer this: You should train both if you want to be a complete MA person. The sport MA teaches you balance, cardio, self-control, line familiarization, distance management, and stress under duress control - all valuable skills for a real life encounter. The Self-Defense MA teaches you how to deal with soft targets of your opponent, weapons, multiple attackers, and how to channel all the attributes you learned in sport and adapt to your situation. I myself like to do a 2-to-1 split Sport (Jiu Jitsu/Judo)/Self-Defense (JKD). I realize that my sport skills will develop slower than my peers, but my SD awareness and training will be there if I need them for a real life situation. Comments?

It's not even knives anymore. You have to watch out for a gun. I knew a Bjj guy that tried to grapple a guy in a street fight. He fell on his back and tried to pull the guy into his guard. The guy's friend walked over and shot him while he was on his back. Too many people think they are going to have a UFC match on the street. That is nowhere near reality.

  • @quinngiles7080

I think Bjj is one of the best arts for the streets. But these are great points The reason I think BJj is one of the best if not the best martial for the street is becausw if your main concern is self-defence most situations can be avoided by awareness or diffusing the situation. Usually if somebody is trying to punch you or starts walking towards you it's quite simple to keep the distance and tell him I'm sorry I don't want to fight. Sure there are some situations where mad man wants to kill you but generally it's pretty easy to back away. Now when this crazy guy grabs you or starts punching like crazy and you're stuck I find closing the distance is a really good way to defend yourself. Sure strikings amazing too but the one hitter quitter is easier said than done especially if you don't have a lot of experience like me. And also it's quite easy to fall while taking punches or you could get tackled or head locked and then that's what jujitsu is all about. My opinion the best art for self defence is Bjj with good striking knowledge (knowing when to use it instead of grappling and having some good punches) as well as a lot of awareness of knives and dirty moves. Good video with a lot of good points! Cause your right! You can't ignore the eyes or some bites. As well as knives.

Put a magic marker in the hands of a smaller untrained person then wrestle with them as they try to make as many marks on you as possible. Dots or lines it doesn't matter. And thats when you already know they plan to do that . Hell a knife is unique in that it doesnt even need an operator to cut or stab you. You can fall on it or brush against it and it can still do you . It's the OG of weapons for a reason
