The Pit Online Dojo: Does BJJ Suck?
I learned very early in my martial arts training that neglecting any aspect of martial arts left you open to defeat, And I also realized that every aspect of martial arts is anecessary piece of the puzzle and if you neglected one you would be only strong as your weakest link....

    If you Train bjj you will have a good part of the 3/4 of those items covered. You learn and can use wrestling, judo, muay Thai trips and pummel in bjj to get your opponent to the ground. Most Bjj competitions start standing up. You get points for takedowns but you are not penalized for dropping on the ground to pull guard. You are not penalized to be on your back too. It's almost a complete martial art for mma but it gets even better when you add ground and pound and stand up striking. But, as all grappling sports, some techniques are almost useless when striking is added to the fight. In my opinion it needs less tweaking than other martial arts to become good in mma.

    I'm noticing the forearm and upper arm are in a fixed positional contracted position upon contact with the target mass in the overhand right just like the arm positional contact configuration of the boxing classical hook punch. However, in the overhand right punch once you make contact should you extend your forearm like a straight right during extended follow through or should you leave your arm bent during follow through like the hook punch?

    Hi John, first of all, I want you to know that I love your channel and I´ve watched plenty of videos. Especially on how to improve my striking. Now about Jiu Jitsu, in my opinion, what you said is partially true. BJJ lacks in striking, but has all 3 other aspects you mentioned. A BJJ fight (like a mma, boxe, kickboxing) starts in a standing position and not on the ground, you need wrestling too to either take your opponent to the ground or get in a dominant position. And finally BJJ has conditioning too as all other fighting sports. And of course in modern mma you can´t go in a cage only with your bjj or wrestling. you need to be a complete athlete

    I always wanted to train back in the early 90's but there wasn't any good schools for this (cage fighting) in my town and a lot of it wasn't accepted because it broke some loyalty to the particular martial art that was being trained. I got into many fights growing up and took this to my adult life and I've used it effectively even against trained people because I learned in fights growing up who to take down and who to mix the punching with takedown avoidance. I learned a lot through trial and error and I remember thinking I had the secret by knowing this but it was always known by many and Bruce Lee popularized it. Now as a man at the top of the mountain (age) and on my way down, i now want to train in martial arts just to do something i always wanted to do to add to my knowledge of street fighting and to keep in shape for the rest of my life except it'll be minus the possibility of doing it for money like I wanted. P.S. Oh well, we should all be happy for what we have instead of what we want.

  • @wowantonlavey
    @wowantonlavey8 жыл бұрын

    Definitely agree with it being just 1/4 of the game. Id Say that a few different schools of training could be used in the ground transition / defense phase instead of wrestling. Judo especially, a couple stand up arts have strong sweeps and sprawls. But i think the point here is, bjj is really the only ground game. The set up was every bit as important as the subs in the holmes/mcgregor defeats.

    for me I train in everything for a few reasons. I like BJJ but it isn't my favorite aspect of martial arts but I didn't want to be the guy who if I had a problem with someone and we decided to fight about it that I'd be looking to set up rules that would benefit me. I wanted to instead be the guy who can (if needs be) fight under any ruleset once I understand it. I mean the greatest boxer on earth who wont fight someone under mma rules is hiding from certain aspects that they are untrained in, but even the highest skilled mma fighter is doing the same thing in a way because there are competions like Kudo or Combat Sambo where you have striking and grappling but also have a uniform that the other fighter can grab to use. mma guys are not used to that in most cases.

    BJJ & Jiu jitsu are really well put together, well planed out & so is Algebra well put together but when is the last time you used Algebra on the street? You don't same with BJJ. Real world combat is much different than sparring or a sport match. Real street attacks done by predatory criminals are quick & violent . Most "martial arts" are not realistic in preparing a person for real world violence. Sport is not combat.

    It's funny to read so many comments bad mouthing BJJ that come from people who are pure strikers, saying BJJ is worthless in the street. My issue with that is that someone who doesn't know grappling is extremely likely to be rushed and taken down by an untrained just simply strong opponent - I've seen it happening to trained strikers in street fights since a one punch KO is quite unlikely. So If I wouldn't train both grappling and striking I would be a lot more worried about being taken down by a stronger, heavier guy as a striker than I would be about getting KOed as a pure grappler. In fact I have seen a BJJ white belt (2 stripes) take someone down in a street fight who was trying to hit him with a bottle and achieving mount position quickly and just hit him in the face until the guy was unconscious. He never trained ground and pound but then again it's not that difficult...

    RNC is NOT BJJ.... Gracie's did the best marketing job in history, they took almost any move from Japanese JuJitsu and got their fans to believe it is BJJ. Gracie JuJitsu did expand the original art but RNC, arm bar, triangles are all original Japanese JuJitsu that existed in several styles way before the first Gracie was born. Gracie JuJitsu marketed their families expansion of an existing art so much that most people now believe any JuJitsu is from Brazil.

    Are you dumb or what. They never claimed that they invented the choke. What they did was modify the techniques to allow a smaller man to hv a better chance to win a fight using more leverage and better positioning. BTW I agree with what John says.

  • @andrewsora9589

    @andrewsora9589

    8 жыл бұрын

    Not "dumb" at all but I see you are rude. The chokes in jujitsu and other techniques were already geared to allow small man to succeed. The japanese are typically on small side. Gracie modified and made some further evolution and was a great martial arts family. My point was the marketing of BJJ has been done so well that public forgets about japanese version and origins. If the public sees a choke or a arm bar they believe it has to be BJJ.

    I understand you point, but , as a old brazilian martial art fan, I have to desagree. And my point of view backs to 1994 the first UFC as example. Ok, BJJ is more a sport nowdays than a a real effective science of figthing. Ok, the BJJ is a very risk discipline in a street fight - I live in Brazil, believe me, the things here are really caotic, ppl die here for nothing all the time. But in the essence BJJ has the aproach fo all elements you mentioned in a ring situatio, I mean the "old BJJ" from the Gracies. Got to remember you all mantial arts in 90s had a common first enemy: the BJJ, and the concept of MMA just born because of the impredictable BJJ fighters hehe. it depends who the judoka is , im not a fan of rousey ,but i think that she proved that judo can beat wresters and other mma fighters . i ve seen judo guys beat bjj guys in grappling tournements with bjj rules . In judo rules i ve havent see any bjj practitionner passed the the first round in judo grand prix or higher championships . judo has differents rules than bjj , we start a fight standing they just lay down and try to pull you down .sorry no disrespect for bjj , cross training is good but it doesnt help much a judoplayer , in fact bjj came from maeda who was a judoka specialized in newaza and a dicsiple of Jigoro Kano the founder of judo. .In judo we want the ippon ,it can be done in 5 ways , the perfect throw , the pinn during 20 secondes ,the armbar , or the shock .why ippon ..... because it symbolise the opponents death . Kano wanted to preserve the old samurai batlles if with your armour you get thrown you dont have a chance to get upp and its over . its a symbol but in the same time is the quest of perfection . it is more than a sport . its a way of life , when my son competes in a tournement and winns with a perfect technique and gets the ippon you can see an aura of satisfaction and a glow that shows what judo is all about , body , mind , spirit . you speak about real fights ,i grow upp in france during the 70 and 80 and everybody at school was thrill about karate and bruce lee ( whitch i admired ) me and my friends were judo guys , we compete a lot and when we got to fights we were unbeatable , it was so easy they allways try to kick , we just grapp the leg ,sweep them and if the guy wasnt KO, we shock him or pinn him till he gave up ,we didnt even use armbar it would have been to dangerous . i still like your videos ,but someone has to stand for judo , its an olympique sport and the training is one of the hardest you can get . thanks for youre insides and no hard feelings.

    BJJ is not and will never be the be all end all art. no such thing. what you need is to be well rounded. i know easier said than done. but you need to cover ALL of your bases. weapons-kicking-punching-TRAPPING- and then grappling. only if and when you train all 5 ranges will you become a well rounded fighter. ofcourse the PT and everything else included. now your not gonna go to a boxing gym to learn to kick. you learn the best art for each particular range. weapons? filipino martial arts. kicking? muay thai. punching? boxing. trapping? wing chun. and grappling? BJJ. having all those put together with the philosophy of get it done fast and most effectively you have yourself Jeet kune do my friend. you want a be all end all art? JKD is the way to go. your welcome

    This is such a weak point of view. Striking is ineffective on the ground? Sounds like something George Dillman would say.

    Well obviously you don't think that, because you wouldn't of wasted another minute or two commenting TWICE!, so you either have a lot of free time on your hands, or you just like to be rude.... Either way more power to you brother.
