So for me I had one afternoon with the Dreamcast as I bought it brand new full price the day they announced Sega was existing the console market. When my dad came home he tried to make me take it back because he got a bulletin on his pager about it from the stock market feature he had. I didn't care it had the demo of Sonic Adventure 2 and that was literally the only game I cared about that year

Great video lads! Your point about Sega failing to nurture their franchises across generations is spot on I think. Even compared with Nintendo, Sega made the hardest bit look easy - they spat out franchises in every genre that paired distinctive, enduring iconography with great gameplay like it was nothing. But instead of evolving them over years, and carrying them to successor platforms, they would launch a new console with new franchises. It's easy to imagine a world in 2024 where Shinobi is bigger than Devil May Cry, Shining Force is bigger than Fire Emblem, Ecco is synonymous with the underwater sub-genre, Virtua Fighter rules 3D fighting games, and so on. Sega not bringing their games forward with them leaves people with no frame of reference for interpreting their consoles.

I'm 28 and grew up with playing the SNES long after it was obsolete and then the GameCube. It was in 8th grade when my friends started telling me about the Dreamcast and the Saturn, and I was a little shocked as I didn't even know there was a 4th contender for the GC/Xbox/PS2. I went to a used game store and bought a Dreamcast for $50 and Sonic Adventure. I played Sonic Adventure 2 on the GameCube and loved it, and was glad to play the first one. Loved it even more tbh and played it till 100% complete. From there I went offy friends recommendations and one by one, downloaded and burned Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5...bought typing of the dead and a keyboard, and also bought Seaman and the microphone. That was a decent part of my 8th/9th grade experience in 08/09 playing the Dreamcast and learning about these fantastic games that were swept under the rug. I've gone backwards in time since and have come to love the Saturn.

100 best games ever list and not a single SEGA game in there?! That's blasphemy! Or only Sonic and Shenmue? Really?! What about Panzer Dragoon II (for me PDSaga will always be extra magical), Sega Rally, Streets of Rage 2, Shinobi, Virtua Fighter 2 (what? it doesn't have cinematics? I'm here to play), Phantasy Star Online or...Virtua Tennis? Yes, Virtua Tennis, I adore this game and it's so underrated and forgotten by SEGA. And how can someone forget SEGA at the arcades? They were BIG! Sega Lord X said everything about the legacy of SEGA. We, gamers...are their last legacy 😟

I feel like twin trigger buttons on controllers as Sega made mainstream on the Dreamcast controller might be Sega's most tangible legacy on gaming as a whole (if we're ignoring the games themselves). For racing games, if you're like me and don't have the room for a full wheel and pedal set up, triggers for acceleration and braking were a game changer over using face buttons, leaving the thumbs free to steer with the analogue sticks.

We had a GameCube growing up I wanted sonic adventure but it didn’t get the best reviews so I didn’t get it. I played it a few years ago and it blew my mind and I was kicking myself as to why I didn’t play it sooner but I didn’t know any better so from that day on I’ve mostly ignored mainstream reviews because there’s always some kind of bias there or hidden agenda. I don’t know. Absolutely love sonic now. I prefer sonic to Mario now. Hate Mario wonder for example. Currently playing through the sonic advance games which I somehow missed growing up. I did have the rush games for ds though.

My 5 year old loves sonic. We play Sonic Mania regularly and have played some Sonic 1-3 on my phone and PC as well as Sonic Adventure 2 Battle mode and sega and sonic all star racing transformed. It's great that Sega has been releasing a lot of it's old content on PC but a huge disappointment that we don't see quality ports of Virtua Racing, Daytona and Sega Rally or many of their old library on modern systems with the exception of Virtua Racing on the switch. We need to see the outrun games brought to modern systems and Sega would do well to get more of their Arcade, Sega CD, 32X and Saturn games ported properly, possibly their Master System and Game Gear games too.

Agreed about Virtua Fighter on the Saturn , just like Virtua Fighter 2 you actually don’t notice the graphics difference compared to the arcade games when they absolutely nail the mechanics so accurately to the arcade game, you could could get to a high level playing on the Saturn and instantly be great at the arcade game when you play that, that in my mind is what an “arcade perfect” port is

Its so true what Mel says about gaming media just isn't objective now. History is written by the "winners" as they say and Sega only won once in the US and that's where most of these gaming media businesses are from so that's where it seeps in. Dans also right. We planted our flag at the time and even though I had to deviate in the 32bit generation due to not being able to get a new console until the Saturn was dead in the West already, I was still a Sega fan and I wouldn't change my choice of getting a Megadrive, or starting out playing a Master System or enjoying those Dreamcast games when I was able to then getting my DC and Saturn a bit later. Great chat with the 3 of you as always.

Interesting how you talk about graphics cards as i never bought one till i got cod 4 and it wouldn’t work on our new pc that’s when I found out about graphics cards and you had to keep upgrading them. So our old original pc must have had something decent in it when my parents bought it 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’ve been playing a lot of the original Xbox sega games lately. They are awesome but I think the problem with them is sonic. Most people heavily criticise sonic heroes shadow the hedgehog etc so dismiss the sega games of that time. How foolish. Some incredible exclusive games on the Xbox. And like you say outrun 2 does feel like the last real sega game. Only modern game that kinda feels old school sega is maybe super monkey ball. New one out soon.

Those missing ips from the genesis, master system and game gear were badly needed on the sega saturn. Sega kept cancelling games due to ego and not giving developers any resources. Sega need to leave sammy and rejuvenate the company back to its software glory days. So the company can gain respect. Upcoming sega next generation titles need to release. With more sonic mania, streets of rage 4, shenmue, yakuzo, valkerie chronicles, beyonetta like games using past ips (phantasy star abd ect).. Sega pc games were huge improvemrnt over the home ports. We can still play them till this day.

IGN's Top 100 are an utter joke. Not only do they disrespect SEGA, but their top 100's disrespect entire genres too. That Top 100 which SEGA Lord X talks about also has not ONE Beat Em Up, not ONE SHMUP, and very few arcade games on there, yet it's full of slow, overrated beginner games like Chrono Trigger and Earthbound. Like, the 80's were built on SHMUPS, BEUs and Arcade games! I mean, how on earth Afterburner 2 the full arcade cab doesn't get a spot is unreal. I've seen queues of people fighting to get a go on that cab, I've never seen that with bloody Earthbound lol. Seriously tell me that if someone put Donkey Kong (which is on the list) and Afterburner 2 full cab in front of you, you'd play Donkey Kong lol. Because I spent hundreds of hours in the Arcade (and still do), and no-one was fighting to play Donkey Kong. But Afterburner 2? Yep.

KZread is far more automated when it comes to ads these days (you either tick on or off on a checkbox), but when I checked the settings it said it was adding an ad every 3/4 minutes … I was actually quite taken aback, so I’ve disabled the mid-roll ads.
