The Transition from Saturn to Dreamcast feat. Saturn Dave & Tom Charnock.

Ойындар

In this episode, we welcome two legends of the SEGA podcast & content creation scene.
First, it’s our good friend and SEGA brother from another mother, Saturn Dave - co-founder of Sega Saturn, Shiro!
Joining Dave, is another close friend, it’s the founder of the Dreamcast Junkyard, the Atari Jaguar connoisseur himself, Tom Charnock.
We discuss the rising popularity of the Saroo ODE on Saturn, Dan’s recent trip to Japan, show our latest pick ups, and delve into our main topic; the transition from Saturn to Dreamcast, and how we filled that SEGA-less void.
Enjoy, and we’ll see YOU on the SEGA side!

Great chat as always chaps. The Transformers 40th anniversary is definitely in full swing. No issues from this Sega fan segueing into some Transformers for a bit! Dan talking about Soul Calibur with the fishing rod reminded me of a year or two ago where I played Virtua Fighter 2 with the Saturn wheel for a laugh 😂 Dreamcast definitely felt like an enormous jump in quality to me. I knew it was coming but then saw nothing until I went to my cousin's (as usual 😂) and they had one. I got to play so many games over the next few years and I loved them all. PSO was definitely a lasting love as a mate of mine played it so whilst I didn't own it, it spurred me to find a DC myself finally (as I was still on a PS at the time!) and pick some games up. That was my first console of that gen before I grabbed a GC and then a ps2 a bit later. Brilliant console. Still don't like the pad layout though. Wire is in an awful spot! I remember playing a finished version of Half Life on the DC that a mate sorted for me along with Ikaruga at the time roughly. I really enjoyed it and ended up picking up the PC ports a little after. That would have been awesome to be released properly! Love how James and I both worked at Safeway's 😂 working there got me my DC, GC, DVD player, Wide-screen TV, PS2, Wii, PSP and DS 😂

Everyone had the same experience of the store clerk pushing everyone towards the Playstation. I had a PS first but loved the saturn for its capcom games more and did not feel that is just died, I got mine in 1996 and had loads to play and it felt like the right time to move onto the Dreamcast when it happened.

1:41.12: I do want to note something. While, yes, DVD was generally pricier and more difficult to burn games for some time. That didn't stop bootleggers from taking PS2 DVD games and fitting them into CDs up until I'd say maybe 2003 lol. It's something I've personally experienced a lot of in my country.

It's funny you said that about NFL2k; Me and my friend put it on the TV, and briefly tricked his dad that it was a real game on TV lol

To the comment about playing Guardian Heroes on the Saturn all night and ignoring the N64, I had a similar experience but it was with the Dreamcast. It was Christmas of 2001 with the Dreamcast on it's last legs unfortunately and me having just bought it with Sonic Adventure 2 that prior summer. My pal got a GameCube, and the other an Xbox. We all brought our consoles over and it was the DC that we played all night Dead or Alive 2, Sonic Adventure, Grandia II, and yes even Sonic Shuffle haha while the "new" consoles sat there unused.

Make sure that all-in-one cart has a beveled connector, if not take the time to bevel it yourself. Also compare the thickness of the PCB to a OEM Sega PCB before using in your saturn.

A lot of people that time were saying that the dreamcast should have been done as a $99 addon for Saturn, saving the Saturn games market while saving SEGA millions in development and maintenance costs. They also could've cleared out all of that Saturn inventory, had backward compatibility, and kept 9 million Saturn fans.

That’s one I’ve certainly never heard, Max … and we followed Dreamcast’s rumours and unveiling all the way through various leaks and supposed designs. Interesting. - James.

Also, the 5th gen era was cinematic, easter egg and story driven. Had the saturn never had its suprise launch and give developers every single resource to port games to the saturn. Definitely, the dreamcast will have a DVD drive and a faster and more powerful hardware. Releasing it later and strengthening the 6th gen era which is the best era for 3D gaming. Also, neck and neck as the best time for arcade perfect compilations ports with the 7th gen consoles. At least the Xbox (first gaming console using pc hardware), and even the 360 kept the dreamcast spirit alive. Also, sonic on the gamecube and virtua fighter on the ps2. Plus, Windows CE brought pc games and online/media features which led to the dreamcast. Later on, browser, media and online interface made its way to other brands in the 7th gen consoles era. Which started on the saturn netlink. Which was inspired from sega channel, philips cdi-online, amiga cd32/cdtv, apple pippin and fm towns marty.

I was persuaded by stores and media to go with the PS1 which I got for Christmas 95 but I was lucky enough to get my Saturn around Easter time 96, I did buy the odd Saturn game until they ended support but I do regret not buying more

Stores made $80-100 per PlayStation. Saturn's were just 6% markup. And SEGA lost $100 per Saturn, so they wouldn't restock consoles. Devs saw that and left for SONY or PC.

DVD payed Sony royalties, which is why I think the Gamecube and Xbox did not support it. The Xbox had the peripheral/add on, but that was so Microsoft did not get the cost for DVDs. I was so in to Arcades growing up I stopped watching movies and TV for about ten years around that time. So the idea of having a cheaper DVD player only appealed to me after Sega was forced to cancel the Dreamcast. Also Soul Reaver 2 was ever present on my mind.
