What IS San Francisco Style Pizza?? | Best Pizza in San Francisco

In a foodie city like SF, it's surprisingly hard to find a decent slice of "San Francisco style pizza" -- whatever that is. Fellow San Francisco KZreadr Tom Dehnel joins me this episode to help figure out the San Francisco Pizza scene.

I’m so excited to try Square Pie Guys! My favorite pizza in the world is Prince Street Pizza in New York, closely followed by Lions & Tigers & Squares in New York. Both are also Detroit style pizza. If you ever travel to the South Bay, I highly recommend A Slice of New York. Their pizza is incredible. I’ve tried so many different flavors of their slices and all have been delicious.

Delfina, flour + water, and Pizzahacker are all good examples of SF style. They are Cal-Italian, neo-Neapolitan with high quality, interesting seasonal toppings that define California cuisine. Pizzahacker just a few blocks down from Zante’s in Bernal, also has a sourdough crust with smoked sea salt on the cornicione. I would say that is very unique, creative and represents SF well.

Excellent choices! The first two are very popular and I haven't heard of the third one but will put it on my list to try. Tom and I talked a bit about the sourdough crust being possibly representative of SF but I ended up cutting it from the final :) Funny enough I started noticing international pizza places (like in Asia & the Middle East) actually do represent that as SF style!

I would totally recommend pairing Tom's pizza video with this one; he also covers Square Pie Guys, Gioia, and Tony's (he covers the signature Neopolitan and I cover the California style) but also throws in popular parlors like Little Star, Pizza Delfina, and Flour & Water. We're definitely missing some other really great shops out there but weren't ready to commit to a two hour video :) So, SF locals, share your favorites in the comments!

I brought my team to Tony's to celebrate a couple of work milestones. My team loved the pizzas there, though it's just okay to me. I guess it comes down to preferences. I don't like cracker-like pizzas or having my cheese or toppings burned.

I agree, there's no credible conversation of SF's serious pizza appreciation without Giorgio's inclusion. The results will be diluted and inconclusive, tho this kind of aggregation is not new and while not a waste of time, it only serves the YT Channel host and not the public.

These lists are always controversial as there are usually more places than I can cover in one video :) So for New York style (I didn't want to cover two) I went with Tom's choice as he had done the research - and he's from New York 😂. I agree Giorgio's is definitely up there and perhaps I need to do a second video to round it out! But do try Gioia's - for me it was the best of the 4 in this grouping.

@@ZeeneInRealLife I get your reasoning, and tho I've been to and liked the one in Berkeley, it still seems like the newer joint gets the consideration. That said, it's your channel and your criteria should fit the agenda. The tasty and worthy dim sum places was a good reminder of random not being a factor in choices, and why would it each place had plenty things to be considered before one would decide where and how to spend the dim sum dollar. And again it's all reasonable. I do like that other people get pulled in to your videos, sometimes seemingly unscripted prior. The difference makes it worthy of the option to view.

@@ZeeneInRealLife Intrigued by Tom's inclusion as a pizza enthusiast, at least plenty to have organized his outing, I viewed his video understanding why you'd relied on his choice for NYC styled pizza. One thing to be clear, it has been said that the NYC water contributes to the mystical, can't quite put my finger on it attribute that makes it so special, would that qualify as NYC umami? Square Pie Guys sounds like a good reason to get some, thanks for that. Gioia in Hayes Valley becomes another consideration, having tried and enjoyed the Berkeley locations offerings.

Hi Dee! Tom isn't a pizza expert (hopefully I didn't state that in the video?) -- he's included in the video as a NY pizza fan who just completed a pretty thorough and recent survey of the SF pizza scene. Although I do believe he had a pizza expert in the group that helped him put together the video. It was a way for two people (me & Tom) studying pizza culture here to get together and share our notes/thoughts with others. Hope that helps!

@@ZeeneInRealLife Ive been a GM of a few pizza places, some local and chains. I can sling some good pies if need be. CPK is completely So Cal, Deep dish is a casserole, St Louis is an abomination. The best pizzas are the ones that are Neopolitan, cooked in wood oven. When I used to be a pizza cook, neh, a "pizzaiolo", i would have my oven cranked to about 800'. I would spend ten hours sweating with that oven in front of me, and loving it.. the kids these days have no clue. its all about atmosphere and coolness factors, yet the factor that is the most is the artistry of the pizza. Tonys is running on rep for the last few years, the square pie guys was a pop up till they got their brick and mortar shop. Their offerings look great, I would prob get a piece, but to call that pizza, ya, thats a no for me.. The Indian pizza, thats just toppings on bread, might as well call that Indian Bruchetta.
