What is product management? - Agile Coach

Ғылым және технология

www.atlassian.com/agile/produ... The craft of product management is all about creating a shared understanding with your team about what you're building, for whom, and, most importantly, why. Distinguished Product Manager Sherif Mansour walks us through the product mangement craft as he's seen it grow and change over his ten years of experience doing PM at Atlassian. His main takeaway is that while you might be tempted to focus on writing amazing product requirements or managing the perfect backlog, likely the best thing you can do is create a shared understanding, and then get out of your teams way.

I have learned a lot. The product manager is the representative of the customer and has an important position in the software development life cycle. Our product manager, project manager, and R&D team work together in the ZenTao system.

Interesting that they view the Roadmap as the parent of a PRD. Most teams I see use a Roadmaps to put a timeline to the features articulated in the PRD. In this more common scenario, I find Roadmaps not just useless, but harmful as they perpetuate the view that there are “full features”, which contradicts the approach of emergent products where teams experiment with functionality to discover how to better and better meet customer needs over time. Use of PRD’s risk this as well, but typically the sections of a PRD are so fungible company to company that PRD’s can be structured in such a way that they align well with emergent product design.

My development coordinator position is feeling much more like a product owner position. The waters are very murky with the Product Manager. He does the Roadmap and reviews / sets all the requirements but the backlog doesn't get done. At one point I was the slave making the road map based on their input. I guess I need to take full control of the backlog and set the priorities of the issues clearly for the team to complete. Maybe when I do and get criticised for some of the backlog management I take offence and throw it back to the Product Manger to handle but then the Product Manger doesn't have time to go through all the JIRA issues one by one. So the conclusion to my rant is that the Product Owner (me) needs empowerment to be able to manage the bugs and improvements while the Product Owner is off doing the talking and political aspect of the product's development. As a technical person I don't want to talk to people I want to get shit done and learn about new technologies and methods along the way.
