my father past away a week ago. he diagnosed with pd since he was 40. the most heartbreaking thing i saw in life is to see him deteriorating so badly that he couldn't walk without falling every few minutes and could not talk properly until no one could understand him And he could not control his jaw and would drool endlessly.even though he became a shell of his former self he never complained. he fought through everything. He fought to live another day.he was so strong but the combination of pd and covid 19 that he got in nursing home was too much.. he even overcame covid after 2 weeks which he was sedated and ventilated.He recovered but got pneumonia and a hole in his lung.and he couldn't fight anymore.he was a true hero.i'm so sad. he suffered so much.he didn't saw anything good in his life just fought to survive.r.i.p. father. i will carry on your legacy to hold on to life and fight everything and never surrender

I had PD symptoms when I got COVID that thankfully went away several months afterwards. Very scary. Sending love and healing to your husband.

I know someone who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's. It changed him so much, he used to love going outside and spent his time with his garden just outside his house but now he rarely goes out and just stays in their home all day. That saddens me that disorder could really change a lively person to someone aloof. So, thank you for this informative video! I also liked that you mentioned that the treatment for PD isn't really a cure and doesn't stop the disorder from progressing but is something that will help the patient ease the symptoms.

Thank you SO much. I’m almost 60 and was diagnosed a little over 2 years ago and already had arthritis that had taken me out of work in 2004, several allergies so am high mileage classic determined to stay alive as long as God permits. A bad gallbladder almost took me on out last winter as docs though my PD was killing my appetite and making my food come back up until it showed on an ultrasound when I was down to 73 pounds. Was literally starving to death here in the land of milk and honey LoL. Hospice came in bc I became too weak to shower and live alone & Medicare doesn’t cover an Aid unless we working class are dying, but at this point I was. Once surgery was scheduled, hospice left the day before my surgery and my only child and his family stayed with the night after. Surgeon said I should be fine after that. Weighed 71 without the gallbladder haha! Figured my weight would be back by Christmas bc my appetite sure was! Malnutrition sure does damage everywhere, even emotionally. Next month makes a year and I now weigh 83. Learned it is as difficult to gain weight as it is to lose weight. Likely losing each calorie as soon as I gain it due to doing laundry, self maintenance, although not as good at any of these things as I’m use to, in a catch 22. Was VERY happy to find this place for info! 😀👍 Tried APDA, gave them my info, and started getting solicited for funds for research! Duh. Unless they want a lab rat I can’t help them haha! Medical bills take my money so yes, I definitely called them to stop automated calls and sending me their flyers. My thumb and eyes are done for. Just wanted to introduce myself and thank you all for this informative place. GBU all, providers of information and fellow Parkinson’s sufferers. I’d like to share a line I made up to keep repeating to myself as a reminder, to stay positive, to hopefully help someone else: I have Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s does not have me. There is a difference and I’m not allowing that to change. Have a great weekend ahead. ✨♥️✨

I'm glad he's an advocate for research and he's a great spokesperson. I was a kid in the '80s so I grew up on Growing Pains, Teenwolf and Back to The Future. I always liked Michael because he's always been down to earth and came off as someone that would be a great friend. Movies like Back to The Future made me feel like anything was possible.

@Andrew Greif I’m a grandmother who has this too, and appreciate your concern for your grandmother. I’m sure my grandson is worried too bc he’s not coming over much anymore. Rest assured that we are fighting this thing as hard as we can. It has changed my appearance, as my face doesn’t look the same, but in my heart my grandson is still the light of my life. I don’t laugh and play as I did, but I still love him more every day and enjoy every minute with him. I’ve heard it affects us all different so I can tell you, it made me lose weight, a lot of weight, and I look older bc it did change my face, giving me what I’ve heard called the Parkinson’s mask. I look serious even when I’m joking LoL, so I don’t like that. Don’t know if you’ve been able to talk about this with your grandmother, as my grandson and I haven’t discussed it. That’s why I’m hoping you see this and that it will help you anyway. I’m going to sleep soon so will say a prayer for you and your grandmother. I hope that you and she will get to talk soon and have a good visit if she is still up to that. Don’t just assume she isn’t without asking her please. She might be missing hanging out with you if you and she have been close. Im sorry this thing got to her and me. But we have it; it doesn’t have us dear. We are still here and still love our families. Thank you for caring about her. :)

TRACKING improvement FIRST STEP: a UPDRS test, a push test with video, a walking and turning test with video, a talking test with video and possibly a writing test with video, standing from seated on hard back chair video with your arms crossed. These videos are kept on file to be used for comparison with future videos. This is a fairly accurate means of documenting improvements over time as it is actually fairly easy for some people to not realize how much they have improved over time.

I think this is a nicely done video. If I could give one piece of feedback, in future updates I think it would be useful when describing common symptoms (depression, constipation, cognitive decline, etc.) to also include mention of the voice, speech, and swallowing changes to help prepare people for these common symptoms. I understand that you can't list every possible manifestation, but given that 90% of patients experience the voice and speech symptoms, I think it would be helpful. (I'm a speech-language pathologist.)

@Pamela thank you and I agree. I’m having trouble swallowing at this time so time to find some video helps on here since I live alone and am on Medicare in a small town. KZread is my specialist LoL. That’s my choice of course, not wanting to arrange out of town travel. Did the first year and eventually may again, but not seeing well being another of my symptoms, I drive as little as possible. I thought I was keeping a sore swollen throat due to my allergies that never improved. Thank you for helping people in your occupation.

Many thanks for this. As you mentioned, Parkinson's disease is comprised of upper body dyskinesia (slowness of movement, poverty of movement and difficulty initiating movement), postural instability which is a late feature of the disease, and tremor- the tremor is actually only present in two thirds of patients when they are diagnosed, it's a resting tremor and intermittent.

Thanks for making a Idiots guide to Parkinson's, short & to the point. Very helpful for explaining to friends & family.

This is so educational! This will help me a lot! Thank you!

The video was very informative! I like how it explain well on what Parkinson disease is and its causes and treatments. In the video says the PD medications can’t slow or stop the progression of the disease but they can ease symptoms and help you continue doing much of what you have always done. I love that they have foundation for PD and it is really a great help for them and I can see how they want to give hope for the PD. I love their saying that “the latest research is the latest hope’.

I don’t have Parkinson’s diseases nor any symptoms associated with this kind of disorder as well as my family and I thank god for that. I’m already familiar with this kind of diseases but I’m glad that I have stumble upon this very informative and helpful video. I learned new interesting facts about what Parkinson Diseases really are, also the do’s and don’ts associated with it. I knew now that Parkinson’s disease have no specific reason why it exist but genetic and the environmental factors may play a role about it. I love how the speaker mentioned that the treatment for Parkinson’s disease isn’t a cure but rather it will only help to ease and lessen the occurring of symptoms and to avoid the disease to get worse over time.

My mum has had epilepsy since she was 3 years old. she’s been on medication ever since. She’s also has anxiety and depression and although my mum has never been diagnosed with a learning difficulty, she has had problems comprehending and understanding. Over the past couple years her mobility has got worse. Past few weeks she’s had so many falls and is now unable to walk without assistance. She also suffers from tremors, stiff body, takes short steps, is quite unbalanced and has on and off constipation. I took her to the doctors today and they have told me it looks signs of Parkinson’s. Mums been referred to neurology and had some blood tests done. I’m really scared, which is why I’m watching this video. My mum is only 49 years old.

I thought my mom was the only one. It feels so good to hear this. My mom is 47 and has had parksinsons for the last 5 yrs. Recently in Dec she got covid and her symptoms started getting worse. For the past 5 yrs her left hand has been the only thing shaking but now she's having trouble walking and both hands are shaking. Ive also noticed some balance issues lately that i dont want to point out. It all happened so fast and im so worried for her. Im pretty much a child myself and hurts so much to see her go through this

Thank you for your research. My dearest friend,of 71 years, since kindergarten has PD.. She has as of Jan 4th stopped communicating with me on the phone. She seemed confused about email and texting when I talked to her last. Her husband is still with her but does not talk to me unless I go to the house which I did on her birthday the 9th, and then it's very little. I feel I've lost part of my life. Makes me so sad. But at least I know she is a believer so that's all the comfort I have. I haven't visited with her in person since way before Covid-19 started. I just pray comfort for her. What else can I do?

My mother was diagnosed with Parkinson's several years ago. She ended up being allergic, or responded badly to medication. She ended up getting DBS, basically an implant in her brain. She slowly lost function. Getting confused, having a hard time taking care of herself. She had the battery replaced for the DBS, and few weeks later had a massive stroke. She's currently in a foster home, hospice care. She looks terrible. My heart is so broken for her. She's suffering from delusions that make her cry all day. I pray everyday that she can go with some amount of dignity. On eggshells for almost a year now.

I have been suffering from constipation weakness depression throat problems for a long time... Can anyone tell methen how much chances I have to suffer from PD?? Or I'm just overthinking??

My friend was diagnosed with PD(Parkinson’s Disease) in the summer of 2012 and I was diagnosed 5 years ago. Her initial symptoms were quite noticeable so was mine. She first experienced weakness in her right arm and her speech and swallowing abilities were profoundly affected. She did so much to seek help for this disease, as she had been her brother's caregiver a few years earlier for the same disease. One day two yrs ago my mom was standing at the top.of two steps going down I to the family room I asked her what she was doing and she said she was trying g to tell her legs to move...that's when I knew something was wrong...1 month later she was diagnosed. She's 79 and taking dopamine.

I am worrying, because earlier this year I started noticing my bed was shaking. I thought it was weird but then I moved and it does it at this new apartment as well. Even the hotel I stayed at. So it’s me. Although it doesn’t look like a shake but if I am laying down I feel like wherever I am is shaking. Now holding my phone out in front of me, it’s moving slightly as if something is rumbling underneath me, but it’s not.

I know somebody who is clinically diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2022. He is 80 years old. He can hardly walk. His disease progressed until he was bedridden for more than six months. Now he can get up from his bed stand up and walk very slowly towards (somebody of course is assisting him holding his arms) the living room where he can sit on his rocking chair. I did some research and found out that no drug is available yet as of December 2022. How can this be possible?

My father recently got Parkinson's, any advice as to how to look after him is appreciated.

I think my grandma has Parkinson’s, she has most of these symptoms. She’s had them for a long time. She says the tremors are just medication side effects, but they’re getting a lot worse. I want her to ask her Dr but she’s an ex-nurse and I think she’s in denial.

My father is a Parkinson pateint from last 8-9 years. It feels bad as there are not any cure to this. Doctors only advise to take medicines on a proper schedule and do yoga and exercise. I wish I could do something to bring him back to a normal person. As there is no cure our family feels bad. We can only spread loves to all the pateints who are suffering from Parkinson.

Zomadee I wish! My opinion is most GP’s don’t care anymore. They work for the insurance companies so it’s best to have an insurance company that has people who care. Getting the right one once disabled can be the difference in life and death. Sharing my opinion from my experience.

@@hedgehogthesonic3181 I have pd and I'm 29 it can happen young never seen a diagnosis at 15 tho but its called young onset or early onset parkinsons I've had a tremor since 6 and a Dr said it was some kind of parkinsonism but after epilepsy and other issues I was diagnosed and I'm now 29 shit happens
