This video is the eighth in a multi-part series discussing computing and the first discussing non-classical computing. In this video, we’ll be discussing what optical computing is and the impact it will have on the field of computing.
00:00 Intro
[0:27-6:03] What is Optical Computing - Starting off we'll discuss, what optical computing/photonic computing is. More specifically, how this paradigm shift is different from typical classical (electron-based computers) and the benefits it will bring to computational performance and efficiency!
[6:03-10:25] Optical Computing Initiatives - Following that we'll look at, current optical computing initiatives including: optical co-processors, optical RAM, optoelectronic devices, silicon photonics and more!

It's funny how smarts peoples can be so dumb at the same time. Optical computing is worthy research. But it is like putting horses behind the carriage. The choking point of multi-cores is the data buses and this address buses. And both of them could be replaced by optical technology NOW!

@@zijkhal8356 The speed of light is dependend on the medium. It is actually faster in copper than in fiber. The determining factor here is interference. An electrical system will always induce an electromagnetic field (It couldn't work otherwise). This will actually disturb the signals. If it were as simple as switching on and off copper would be faster, but since the datasignal is modulated onto a carrierwave fiber is faster since the smaller interference allows for a higher frequency wave to be modulated onto the carrierwave.

There are many misconceptions in this video please go to wiki and read more : A further misconception is that since light can travel much faster than the drift velocity of electrons, and at frequencies measured in THz, optical transistors should be capable of extremely high frequencies. However, any electromagnetic wave must obey the transform limit, and therefore the rate at which an optical transistor can respond to a signal is still limited by its spectral bandwidth. However, in fiber optic communications, practical limits such as dispersion often constrain channels to bandwidths of 10s of GHz, only slightly better than many silicon transistors. Obtaining dramatically faster operation than electronic transistors would therefore require practical methods of transmitting ultrashort pulses down highly dispersive waveguides.

The main issue here is: are any (or all) of these things artifacts of the absolute limits of physics, *_or_* are they things which can be overcome through better technology? I feel that it's important to at least research possible new tech, as it almost always yields better understanding, breakthrough products, or both. tavi.

I often hear about Moore's Law for transistors, and various ways to tackle that issue, but I seldom hear optical even mentioned as a possibility! In a world where we expect to be a full Solar System species in the not-to-distant future, it's vitally important that we *_do_* discuss and consider optical, as it *_will be_* the way we calculate - and communicate - in such a future. Looking forward to more!; Rikki Tikki.

So in terms of non classical styles, what can give us more potential? Optical or Quantum? I'm in school for Computer Engineering right now, I'm sure I'll have to deal with one of these styles some day.

PauLWaFFleZ that’s the wrong question. Quantum computing won’t replacing classical computers. Quantum computers may be better and some types of operations, but worse at others. Optical computing is the same principle. If/when we finally perfect quantum and optical computing it’ll likely exist along side classical computing. Just like a graphics card can’t really replace a CPU, quantum and optical computing won’t replace classical computing.

Quantum and optical computing have a lot of crossover as you'll see in the next video and to reiterate what Sean said, with all our discussions on computing it goes back to the last video where we discussed heterogenous architecture, in which multiple compute devices/architectures/paradigms will work together.

Ignore what both people replied to you. Yes Quantum computers are only really best Used for Longer term Simulation type calculations. However That also means That Using Quantum Computers to Simulate Classical computers will give you a single device that is the best of both worlds. (the research and understanding still needs to made to advance classical computing in order to have a Quantum Computer Simulate it.) Example since a single Quantum Computer will be able to do more calculations than every atom in the universe within 10years you can Simulate Trillions of Classical computers working together in linked Networks all on a Single CPU sized Quantum Computer chip.

"Speed of light" and "flow of electrons" (0:40) is very misleadnig, since electric signal is faster than optical signal (due to the permeability) and it has nothing to do with the "flow of electrons"! The faster "speed" is due to bandwidth and not due to speed of electrons/photons.

So if you make a matrix multiplier optical ALU, you can shine different couples of matrices at it in different wavelengths each, provided you can then filter the output and seperate the different results.
