What is Monkeypox? Doctor Explains What You Need to Know
What is Monkeypox and Should we be worried? Monkeypox is a virus similar to smallpox, and can look like chickenpox. Monkeypox news: There is an outbreak across several countries as of May 2022. Monkey pox has been detected in the UK, Europe, USA, Australia and other countries - even though it is usually found in West and Central Africa only.
In this video, I talk about the history of monkeypox, monkeypox symptoms, including what monkeypox rash looks like, monkeypox prevention, monkeypox treatment including smallpox vaccine and antiviral treatment, and whether we should be worried.

If the smallpox vaccine can prevent monkeypox, do we not use it anymore because smallpox is eradicated and chicken pox is only a mild disease?

Very good question! 1. Smallpox and monkeypox are both orthopoxviruses - because they belong in the same family of viruses, it makes sense that the smallpox vaccine is somewhat effective 2. Yes we don't really need to use smallpox vaccine because smallpox itself is eradicated, and monkeypox is rare 3. Chickenpox (Varicella zoster virus) is not closely related to monkeypox or smallpox, but presents with similar looking rash and symptoms. There is a dedicated chickenpox vaccine to prevent it. Chickenpox should NOT be considered a mild disease because it can have life-threatening complications!
