Well done. Overlapping seasons is a sports fan's dream come true. In October, we've got college football and basketball, NFL, NHL, and NBA. And, by the way, the MLB playoffs and world series take place in October. And people on the West Coast, like me, can literally watch games from morning until night. When the narrator said that the March Madness games start at 12:00 noon. That's Eastern Time. I can start watching March Madness at 9:00 a.m.

The early rounds of March Madness are pure chaos. There are like 6 games going on at any given time and there are always insane upsets that you could never predict. There is nothing like watching some small school beat a highly ranked team and then flipping the channel to see an overtime thriller and then flipping the channel again to catch a dramatic buzzer beater. It’s just an awesome time. Since games are played during the day on weekdays you usually see people watching games during school/work and it’s amazing “water cooler talk”.

There are so many sports that it’s inevitable parts of seasons coincide in time. Not enough time in the college year (which is generally 9 months of school year) to completely separate the sport seasons. But basketball starts late enough that football has ended by the time the meaty part of the basketball season gets serious in January to March.

There is actually a channel on KZread dedicated to March Madness. It is officially sanctioned by the NCAA so there is no chance of any game highlights being pulled for copyright. The channel is called March Madness of course, and last year I believe that they put every single game in its entirety on the channel over the weeks and months following the tournament. And most if not all the games also had a 10-to-15-minute video showing the highlights of every game. They also cover the Women's basketball tournament and during the regular season they have videos discussing top teams and their rankings.

The reason the selections and brackets are announced on a Sunday is that some of the power conferences like the ACC and Big Ten have their tournament championship game on Saturday. You can honestly fill out as many brackets as you want! Lots of people will build a few "sensible" brackets where they make realistic picks, and then they'll just do some funny ones. Like maybe they choose the winners strictly based on the mascots, or they build a bracket full of unlikely upsets. I've never been a big fan of college basketball but those first few days where there are literally 50 games, the atmosphere around the whole country is really quite cool. If there's an unexpected upset or crazy ending, you're gonna hear about it.

Another great video. Not boring at all. In fact, it's gotten me even more hyped for MM, and I hope you do check it out. Like he said, that first Thursday and Friday of the tournament is unlike any other in sports. At any given time you have 4 games going on at once, and you're constantly flipping between them to keep up with the momentum changes. BTW, did you know that Basketball is the only sport that originated in the US as a completely original game? (Football evolved from soccer and rugby, baseball evolved from cricket, hockey originated in Canada) It was created by James Naismith in 1891. While an instructor at the YMCA, he wanted to create another activity for the guys, so he took two bushel baskets, cut out the bottoms, and mounted them at either end of the gym. He made a few rudimentary rules, and the game was born!

Traditionally Friday is for high school games, Saturday for college games, and Sunday for pro games, as for football. The NFL also plays a few games on Monday and Thursday nights. Football teams only play one game each week. Usually basketball teams play two to three games a week, and baseball teams play up to 6 games a week. The reason they wait to Sunday to make the college basketball brackets is for all the conferences to have a winner conference playoff winner.

Overlapping sports seasons is just a thing here because Americans follow so many different major sports. I remember at least one November weekend in college where I went to a hockey game Friday night, football Saturday afternoon, hockey Saturday night, and basketball Sunday afternoon. My voice was absolutely gone by Monday. Regarding the seeding: 12 seeds are usually good enough to at least give the 5s a scare, and at least one of them wins most years. Anyone further down than that advancing is a pretty major upset. Typical is about one 13 or 14 advancing every year, and a 15 every five years or so. Only one 16 seed has ever made it past the first round.

Typical college year runs from September to early June, so 3 full sport seasons have to be crammed into 9 months rather than 12. College Football ends in time to focus on NCAA Basketball Conference play, and NCAA baseball (and other spring sports) is/are just getting started. You still have some time to get acquainted with some teams with the time left and the Conference tournaments that precede the big bracket. This year's Selection Sunday is *March 12th*

Games are 20 minute halves College football is early September to November with Bowl games around the holidays and New Years. No one really pays attention to college basketball until January or February. November and December is pretty much to pad the resume out of conference and go to challenges. The FA Cup and Europe is during the regular season during league play, this is post season. A lot of the magic comes from 4-13, 3-14, and even 2-15 games where a good team goes down to a school most haven't heard of. We're not at ping pong randomness.

12:23 Despite those two teams being considered "the worst" based on their 16th seeds, the Wright State-Bryant game was one of the most anticipated First Four match-ups in NCAA history because Wright State University was playing 12 miles away from their home and played at the University of Dayton Arena, which hosts the First Four. It was a big deal for Dayton citizens and fans of Wright State and the Dayton Flyers in particular because that was the first time that Wright State had played in the UD Arena since December 13th, 1997. There used to be a crosstown rivalry between the Wright State Raiders and the Dayton Flyers known as the Gem City Jam. It was a big deal in the 90's. However, due to policy changes at UD, the Gem City Jam has not occurred since 1997, and fans from both sides hope to see the rivalry game return, especially Wright State fans.

A typical American university's academic calendar runs from late August to the first week of May. Sports seasons are condensed to try to coincide with the three calendar seasons of the academic year, thus sports tend to be lumped together under seasonal categories like "fall sports" (e.g. football & soccer), "winter sports" (like basketball & hockey), and "spring sports" (among them baseball, softball, and outdoor track & field). If a player is on two sports whose seasons overlap, the coaches of each sport typically try to reach an agreement on when the player is due to prioritize which; for example, a football player who also plays basketball would likely miss the first month of basketball season as that's the final month of the football regular season, but be allowed to participate in December workouts and games for basketball as long as they don't coincide with any postseason obligations for football. Some things not noted in this video: the "March Madness" branding is now used across all four television networks presenting the men's tournament as well as all four presenting the women's tournament. In order to accommodate that much televised basketball at once, each game is scheduled to start roughly 15 minutes following the start of another, so fans at home can feasibly catch moments of each active game. Additionally, the same committee that selects teams for the March Madness tournament also determines who the remaining 32 best teams are and puts them in a secondary "National Invitational Tournament"; the winner of that tournament isn't considered any kind of national champion, but it gives those teams more exposure and a few extra games to play. Also, I recommend reacting to highlights from the UMBC vs Virginia game from 2018. It's the only time in March Madness history that a 16-seed beat a 1-seed. Virginia was the top team in the country and expected to win the entire tournament, only to lose its first game.

The conferences with numbers in their names, to put it simply, originally had that number teams . For example, the Big Ten, who now have 13 teams, didn't have Rutgers, Maryland, or Nebraska until fairly recently. Over the past couple decades, teams have been leaving smaller conferences to join more prestigious ones. Basically, to chase dollars. It's going to get even more crazy now, with the NIL rules which allows players to get paid for their popularity. The bigger leagues will attract the better players, so all the schools will want to move into the "power leagues".

  • @koldonn1111
    @koldonn1111 Жыл бұрын

So with College Football, we have a few different leagues in CFB, and which the top league is kind of broken up in to two leagues at the same time. You have the following leagues. Division 1 FBS of 133 teams (This is where your Georgia's and Ohio State's are.) Division 1 FCS of 125 teams (This is like a sub league for the FBS. Often times good players in FCS, or even FBS schools will transfer schools to a usually better school. They also occasionally play FBS teams, as most FBS teams will play one FCS team per year.) Division 2 of 169 teams (I know little about this tbf, I don't know if they ever play DIII or DI schools at all.) Division 3 of 250 teams (This is damn near the bottom.) Sometimes schools will move levels, most notably when they go up from one level to the next. There are two FCS teams that are doing it this offseason (Jacksonville State and Sam Houston.) Division 1 is split up in to two sub leagues which do in fact compete against each other. These are called the Power 5 and the Group of 5. The 5 in both of them indicate how many conferences they have. Power 5 conferences are: The Big 10 (14 schools, soon to be 16 with the addition of USC and UCLA) The Big 12 (10 schools, soon to be 14 with the addition of Cincinnati, Houston, BYU, and UCF, however the following year will be back down to 12 with the departure of Texas and Oklahoma) The SEC (14 schools, soon to be 16 with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma) The Pac 12 (12 schools, soon to be 10 with the departure of USC and UCLA. There are rumors of them bringing up Fresno State and San Diego State from the Mountain West conference.) The ACC (14 schools, and there are no changes incoming. They have a deal with the only Power 5 Independent school, which is Notre Dame, saying that Notre Dame can not join any conference other than the ACC until 2032.) 1 Independent, the previously noted Notre Dame. Group of 5 conferences are: The AAC (11 schools, soon to be 14 with the departure of UCF, Cinci, and Houston to the Big 12, and addition of 6 schools from CUSA.) The Mountain West (12 schools) The Sun Belt Conference: (14 schools) The MAC: (12 schools) Conference USA: (9 schools with the departure of 6 schools to the AAC, and addition of 2 Independent schools and 2 former FCS schools) 3 Independents, which are Army, UMass, and UConn.

The Big Ten hasn’t had ten members since 1990 when Penn State joined as the 11th member of the conference. It is now 14 universities with the additions of Nebraska, Rutgers and Maryland in the 2010s, and will further expand to 16 universities in 2024 when UCLA and USC join the Big Ten. The numbers for the variety of conferences represent the ORIGINAL number of members before they moved around and joined other conferences, usually for better shares of TV revenue and other financial incentives, which is the reason why UCLA and USC are leaving the PAC 12 and going to the Big Ten. It’s pretty insane how the game behind the game is played. That’s why even at the university level, sports entertainment is a BUSINESS. This is why men’s basketball coaches are paid so much…they’re banking on the coach to recruit the talent to make it (and hopefully win) the NCAA tournament, which earns them more money from the TV deals that the networks have with the NCAA, which is the governing body for university sports in the US. Also wanted to provide the reason why college football and college basketball seasons overlap. That is because they need to make sure they fit in three seasons of sports within a 9 month period, which is the school year. Therefore, the fall, winter and spring seasons have to overlap a bit. As far as teams to follow, my childhood team is the University of Illinois, which is always more of an underdog choice. One of my alma maters, the University of Connecticut (UConn) historically has done well, but they’re more known for their women’s team than their men’s team. So there ya go! Hope that helps!

the conference tournaments *do not* shorten the games -- the ACC champion will have won between three and five games in as many days. The higher seeds get a bye or two, however, so it's usually just three. I only know of one case where a team won five games in five days to win their conference tournament, although I don't remember which team it was. Sometimes the games even go to overtime. Or multiple overtimes -- famously, in 2009, a Big East quarterfinal between Syracuse and UConn (Connecticut) went to *six* overtimes. This is quite a strain on the players, however, you're right about that. Even the NBA doesn't allow teams to play on more than two days in a row. It helps if you have a deep bench, or if you can win a game in a blowout and take out your starters for a while -- since teams typically have at least 10 players on the roster and only 5 play at a time, and also substitutions are unlimited, you can actually have the entire starting lineup sit down once the game is in hand. The reason seasons overlap is that you can't avoid it with all the sports in the US. The NFL has a four-month regular season, the NBA has a four-month regular season, MLB has a six-month regular season, and I'm not sure how long hockey's is but I"m guessing 4 like the NBA. I'd add that the NCAA basketball selection process is generally less controversial than the football one, because with so many teams getting in, the chance that a team with any chance to actually win the championship gets left out is pretty small, whereas in football there's only a four-team playoff (though there's plans to expand to 12 soon.)

Conference "restructuring" still goes on, some Conferences gain membership, some lose members, i think when you fall below six teams, the NCAA won't give the Conference tournament an automatic qualifier bid.The Conferences used to be comprised of regional teams, they are getting more scattered all the time. Travel expenses are no problem for the bigger p-5's who have much more money with TV contracts and selling subscriptions to their games they have on their own Conference networks, etc.

To give yourself some information before making out your bracket, you can go to ESPN , they have many articles coming out about March Madness. The very first thing that occurs for MM will be starting very soon , that's the 32 conference tournaments crowning their Champions and giving to them their AQ , technically, it's the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association ) that awards each Conference Champion their AQ (Automatic qualifier) also known as getting your "ticket punched" for the NCAA Tournament AKA "March Maddness" , or " The Big Dance " , or " going dancing". For example, right now you can start to see the various conference tournaments schedules beginning Mar 1 and ending by March 12 when all 32 conference champions are decided, then the NCAA selection committee can start their task to pick the 36 at-large teams on selection Sunday, It's all very close to starting, the process that is, for 2023's NCAA Tournament to begin on March 14th.

College football is slightly different in that CFB is split up more in competitive levels. Men's College Basketball Division 1 has the 350+ teams. All of Division 1 is together. In College Football, "Division 1" is basically split in half. FBS and FCS. They each have their own post-seasons.

regarding the naming of conferences: I think two things are worth noting. 1 those titles are often based off of the conference football standing. there may be 12 football teams, but only 10 basketball and 15 hockey but they are all (mostly) the same schools so they get the same name. 2 some schools have moved conferences in the last few years for financial reason and it isn't worth the rebrand so some number league are off due to that (the big 10 has 13 schools and will move to 15 next year).

Weather plays a part in having basketball as a winter sport, as areas in the north can play the sport inside as you know.

Just to add to that, it would probably be rather confusing if for instance the Big 12 became the Big 10 since they actually have 10 teams. If that happened and people referred to the new Big 10 most people would probably be thinking about the old Big 10. Hope that makes sense. But yeah, branding is the biggest reason.

Also, you need to fill out the WHOLE bracket BEFORE the first games are played. Then you sit and watch games and hope that you have at least 2 of your Final Four make it thru to the Final Four games. The whole March Madness is often called The Big Dance. There is also the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) tournament which is by invitation and teams that don't get in The Big Dance go. There is a bracket for the NIT as well but the NCAa basketball tournament is the big one called March Madness. There are also an NIT and NCAA basketball tournament going on for women's college teams as well.

"Brackets" is kinda being thrown out there without any context. The NCAA and selection committee come out with the original tournament bracket. It's from there, every major and small sports network, newspapers, sports bars, restaurants, KZreadrs with their own websites, etc etc will come out with some form of bracket that's printable or interactive for people/fans. Some of these "brackets" are for fun, some for promotional reasons, some for $50 gift card at your local pub, some for banter amongst coworkers, etc etc, and yes, some for real gambling. So when he said hundreds of millions of brackets, that's what he means. Also why on Sunday. Because conferences tournaments don't all start at the same time. So by that party all night Saturday, there'll be several conferences finals being played. Once all are done, then selection committee goes to work. He also didn't mention the Top 25 rankings. Throughout the season the Top 25 teams are announced each week, or the best 25 teams. College football and almost every major college sports also has a weekly Top 25 ranking. Not all are going to win their conferences championship. Many cases multiple teams from the same conference will make the Top 25. So once the final regular season rankings come out, if you're in the Top 25, you'll have like a 99.9% chance to make the tournament. Then like every team, you'll just need to wait until the selection committee is done to see what tournament region and seeding you'll be in.

There are occasional schools which, despite their size, have amazing basketball teams. Gonzaga University, in Washington state, only has 7200 students, but they always produce a major team. Other small schools with amazing teams include Villanova University, with 9000 some students. For several years, the University of San Francisco, with 10,500 students, dominated college basketball. But then you've gut the huge schools like Duke University, with 16,500, or Indiana University, with 34,000, or, as I type, the number one team in the country is the University of Houston, with 38,000 students. And then, on top of all of this, there is the women's basketball, which all of the schools also compete in. For years, the number one women's team was the University of Connecticut, with 32,500. Right now, the number one women's school is South Carolina, with 32,000 students. In the very beginning of the college basketball season, there are tournaments of teams from several different conferences. There are tournaments in Hawaii, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, or the US Virgin Islands, among others. President Obama was always big at picking his bracket.

Something that’s interesting about SDSU right now is that we’re currently in a mid-major conference (Mountain West) that by all accounts will likely be moving to a major conference (PAC-12) soon. If your interested in rooting for a team that’s in a unique and exciting position in the world of college sports, SDSU is the way to go. In my mind, the closest soccer (football) equivalent to this is the World Cup. The World cup starts with 211 countries competing and qualifying to make the 32 team tournament. After that any team *could* become Champions.

Like if it's the Duke blue devils versus the UMBC retrievers, You're going to go with the devils because a devil would beat a retriever. On a side note, if those 2 teams did meet in real life, Duke would absolutely wipe the floor with them, so pick them regardless 😂 Edit: he ended up literally doing that in the video.
