When I was 17 (1979) I decided, rather than school, I would ride from Vegas to Montana to NJ, then back and forth between coasts for the next few years. There were no cell phones, no gps. You just rode until you had to work to get more $$, rinse and repeat. I would run into wonderful people and I would run into not so wonderful people. 5 heart attacks later I still I have a pre packed bag I can throw on 1 of my bikes and go pretty much anywhere. Probably doing Alaska this summer. It doesn't end until the end. What struck me most about your conversation was the amount of people that would help. I NEVER was penniless, I remember going into a truck stop, I had like $3 left and I asked the waiter (an Old Black guy, must have been in his 70's) what can I get for $3, he said that's all you have? I was like yup. He said order anything you want, then he gave me 20 more. It was just like that, I could go on for days but this brings back a lot of great memories. I never did cry though, I'm just one of those people that always know, it's going to be ok... Might be a guy thing.

This is a really nice episode! Just some of your wisdom take-aways for me, were (paraphrased): "The [only] way you learn to be truly alone is to just do it..." and "Two things you'll use for sure are wet wipes and duct tape." Grace's account of her long solo experience reminded me of my first early 1970s long solo m/c trips. Those were my "And Then Came Bronson" days as I rode my Honda CB350 and tried to understand "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." I'm still riding solo trips and re-reading "Zen..." AND still learning - every day, every trip. One thing I do know is people in the motorcycle "brother/sisterhood" are the nicest people!! Thank you for being Excellent.

Back in ‘06, I rode my Honda XR650r (with a HO stator, street legal lighting kit, and six gallon tank), to Santiago, Chile from my home in Kentucky. The initial leg of the trip took over two months of riding 8-12 hours a day with only one day off to fly the bike to Bogota from the Canal Zone. I was promptly robbed at gunpoint about an hour outside of Bogota! Riding at very high elevations in the Andean Mountains was rough, as the Honda was carbureted and I didn’t have small enough jets. Also, the dot 3 brake fluid boiled in the calipers and almost all braking was lost. I switched to dot 5 synthetic, which had a much higher boiling point. I also had 3-4 flat tires. Anyway, I learned lots and lots of fun stuff! Kick start only, no cush drive in the rear hub, 2X4 seat, blah, blah, blah. I stayed in Chile and Argentina for over two years. I did have access to a beach house and also a car for part of the time, but my bike was my main ride. For me, the worst part of living off a bike is sleeping. In a car, you can pull over anywhere, any time, and take a nap. It’s not so easy on a bike. The other issue is exposure to weather and possible threats from predatory folks. It was a tremendous experience, both good and not so good!

Nice! I spent 1 year and about 35.000km riding from most Northern to Southern point of Africa, crossing the Sahara, jungle in the middle and the safari parks in the South. Honda XL500, a bit less than the XR650 but quite reliable.

This one brought back memories of weekly 400 mile commutes between San Diego and Tucson. I called it my Solitary Confinement. I think in that way, I relate to Solo MC road life. I'm a recovering Backpacker, Turned Car Camper, turned RV Camper who is having a mid-life Crisis by picking up an R1250RT and boat load of MC-Camping gear. I call it backpacking for old fat guys .-) Love your works and keep it up. We Are Groot

Nice program! Nicely done. Half of my pleasure in motorcycling is wrenching on my machine and knowing my bike inside and out. So, I'll continue to buy machines that are conducive to self maintenance. This is good because I live hundreds of miles from most dealerships, especially Ducati, KTM, Triumph, Guzzi, BMW, etc.

I found Grace through one of Ben’s camping trip videos. (The one with the steaks…) And I felt that same genuine spirit and sincerity from Grace as well. Thank you both for the invaluable insight and hysterical content! I look forward to every video. Be well and ride safe! You’re the best! Both of you… Record that thirteen hour car ride. I once got stuck in a city where I didn't have access to money to pay for a motel room, so I drove around till I found a hardware store that sold sheds. I was able to get myself and my bike into one of the sheds to spend the night without having to worry about the police or someone trying to rob/harm me. Better that than trying to ride all night when you're already tired.

Just listened to this podcast today! Sorry for being tardy 😂 I am fairly new to moto camping and travel but have fallen for it pretty hard. I have obligations now but use my holidays to gain experience and am seriously considering retiring early and just wandering as much as possible. The world is so big and so beautiful and being out on my bike in it is prolly the most satisfying thing I've ever done for myself! I'm an introvert and a people pleaser so being out alone on the road is a special feeling I find quite liberating. I do what I want, when I want, how I want and that has just not been my experience in anything else but solo moto travel. ❤ Love it!

In 2012 I rode from California to Ushuaia and back up to Colombia in nine months. Some lessons: - You don't have to be stinky. Shower and change clothes after each ride before dinner, wear the evening clothes in the morning for the next ride. Hang your gear up to air out, especially when wet. Get a fan if needed, hotels usually provide these on request. Get creative on where and how to hang your stuff. Keep up on laundry, hotels also provide this service for cheap. Camping is a different story -- we didn't do much of that -- but usually have a day in there at a hotel so you can clean up and reset. - Bring a friend, especially who speaks the language. Much better to have someone go in and check the hotel or border crossing while someone watches outside. The bad guys prefer easy targets. Obviously you can go solo regardless of gender, but a buddy system is safer all else being equal. - You will bring too much stuff initially, but you will pare it down. It's normal. - There are no "no-go" countries or even cities, it's neighborhoods and blocks you need to watch for. You have to ask locals or people who just came from the area (at the hostel usually) for advice. Old forum posts don't count. - The hardest part was deciding to go. Once you've committed in your heart, everything after that flows easily.
