What is it like on SLT? How do I get to SLT? Primary school Leadership

This video touches on my journey to leadership in a primary school from an NQT. I talk about what leadership is like some of the difficulties and some of the things to consider if leadership is your next step or a step you're looking at in future. I hope you find it helpful.

Absolutely love your honesty about your feelings around teaching along your career. I’m currently studying primary teaching at university and definitely go through waves of love for the job but sometimes feel guilty when I’m not loving it!

Yes I think this is normal to be honest. And yes I feel like guilt is very real in teaching in lots of ways! Don’t forget you take care of you first 💜

Hi, thanks for this video. I’m in my 10th year of teaching and been on SLT for the last 3. I was the opposite when I was an NQT- I only ever wanted to be a class teacher. I wasn’t very confident for my first 5 years of teaching and even remember working with 2 fantastic teachers in my third year and I felt really rubbish. I agree it takes time to gain experience. If you had told me back then I would be in SLT I would have laughed and said I could never do that! The thing I find the most difficult is balancing my class teaching with leading English. I always seem to have leadership tasks to do and don’t get any release time for it. Nice to hear about your experiences too :)

Yes I defiantly can relate to your feeling of balancing the full time teaching with the SLT responsibilities and the lack of time to do so. Thank you for your comment :) it’s lovely to hear about other’s experiences!

Do you think teachers on the austism spectrum (aspergers) could handle teaching and all the other team related things?

Do you find your leadership role and responsibilities impact the quality of your classroom practice?

A good question. I would say not I would say it mostly effects my marking! Haha but I still manage to keep somewhat on top of it but I find it hard to do as I always put it down the list! Haha

@@DisplayLady Thanks for the reply. Yeah I can imagine. I'm some what put off the idea of moving into leadership as I worry it will add a lot to an already pretty large workload! I wouldn't want my day-to-day teaching to be negatively impacted by leadership responsibilities. And that extra meeting a week...

Also do you have to be a teacher to become an Assistant or Deputy Headteacher😊

You do indeed, interestingly you do not need QTS to be a head teacher though.

Why don’t you have time out for SLT that you’re entitled to?

  • @DisplayLady

It’s not that I don’t ever get time out of class it’s just not on my timetable so I take it if or when I need it. However, if you are a teacher I’m sure you’re aware that sometimes leaving your class is more work! Haha so it’s not taken unless I really need it.
