ER tech here, even if you're not doing medical interpretation (which requires a WHOLE other set of skills and language), thank you so much for what you guys do. I hope someday to learn ASL and/or Spanish for medical interpretation to make our jobs a bit easier, but it is a LONG road.

I'm currently in college for Media production, and I have the same reasons for ASL being my minor! I am also using my ASL professors (the CODA or Deaf ones) as proofreaders for a script I'm writing about a Deaf main character! It's a bit of the cliche of proving society wrong but I feel like it's a nice one, especially since it's meant to be an action movie

I'm a professional interpreter. I'm curious as to why all black is the norm? I've had multiple clients tell me they hate interpreters wearing all black, so I try to jazz it up by wearing other contrasting colors like grey, blue, or even maroon

I’m neither deaf nor an interpreter, but since it’s been a month and no answer, I’ll throw out a “guess” Based on Some performance experience, where “stage techs” wear all black to literally camouflage themselves to the stage/shadows/darkness for set changes As well as, Hairstylists have traditionally often worn all black, partly to do with using our clothing to create “a backdrop” to view the client in the mirror - but also largely “psychologically” to diminish our own aesthetics - to allow the client to “be the star” I imagine for an interpreter, “fading into the background” can be an important part of many work experiences. You may sometimes notice on TV, someone speaking directly TO the interpreter, rather than TO the deaf person (“tell him I said xyz…”) - this is incorrect, and I imagine by the interpreter making themself as “invisible” as possible, they are aiming in part to keep the focus on the client/situation, rather than their own self. He also mentioned he wears black to contrast his skin tone, which is light - so I imagine someone with darker skin might wear gray or white, to contrast their own, presumably so that their hands are more visible when held in front of their own torso, while still remaining “neutral” in their clothing color.

Yes, as long as your clothing contrasts your skin it’s fine. Also as long as it’s plain it’s fine. I haven’t had a problem wearing colors outside black to assignments

The tradition in theater is to wear all black so you aren't seen actually doing any of the behind the scenes magic. This may be a vestige of that time honored tradition

When I would use ASL in my college choir concerts, I would also wear white gloves so that my hands were highly visible, since we were all wearing black.

I have a story. I was learning asl, my teacher wanted me to become an interpreter (I wish I had). So she'd tell me stories. Good and bad situations. The interpreter was doing a volunteer gig for a religious convention (JW, iykyk). The speaker was emphasizing how thirsty the desert wanderers were. Instead of slowing down the sign for thirst, for emphasis. The interpreter sped the sign up.... (which means something sexual) 😉🤣

We had basically a laptop on wheels that we could bring into a room and video call an interpreter. It would take a while to get someone on the line though, and of course if you need to be urgently stabilized we will NOT wait for that to happen, sorry guys but it's less important to get an accurate history than treat your blood pressure of 70/30 or your gaping chest wound. And ASL interpreters in the ER are "on call" or at the hospital for a certain number of hours, so before your shift starts yes you do shower and get into appropriate clothes. Interpreters are not on call 24/7, they work on shifts just like the rest of us.
