"i got a little less dumb" :p YES! the diasporic experience is so much more nuanced and subtle than how the wider society views as the explicit cultural practices

Absolutely! We're so much more than what we're perceived to be, or even what we perceive ourselves to be at times.

Thank you for these wonderful recommendations. I'm from Suriname, living in the Netherlands. I've always desired to read more Caribean books written by Indo-Caribean writers.

I think I remember knowing some Indo-Caribbean people when I was living in Calgary, so this comes as no surprise to me. But yeah. What most people don't know is Hinduism is pretty large in Guyana and Suriname.

Love book recs! My first Trinidadian friend was Indo Caribbean and Muslim. Thank you for sharing your story and I'm sorry we live in a world where all people of color need to explain their racial background to us white people.

This happened in the French colonies too but since they only had pondichery and a few other cities, we have less Indians but they still are the second biggest demographic in Guadeloupe for example where I’m from

My mom's family is from India (Pakistan now, but they emigrated before the partition) and she grew up in Grenada. I'm really excited to pick up a few of the books you recommended-Cereus Blooms at Night was already on my TBR, so maybe I'll take this as a sign to hurry up and read it. 😅

Oh, thank you for putting The Beast of Kukuyo back on my radar! and of course for sharing this video. Caribbean history in general is not really a focus in American schools, unsurprisingly, so I knew only the most basic overview. And I love what you said about culture / identity being so much more than the obvious markers, or what people assume are the obvious markers!

I just discovered your channel and I love that you did this I’m Jamaican and I’m always looking for books by Caribbean authors. I think that Americans don’t really understand races and ethnicities of Caribbean people because they view things very black or white but this was sweet of you to try and educate your audience because I’m tired of being an educator to the ignorant on subjects like race, ethnicity, and culture. Loved your video 🥰💕🥰💕 new subscriber 😁

I have read David Chariandry's memoir (esque) book I've Been Meaning To Tell You: A Letter To My Daughter and really loved it. I've been meaning to get to Brother ever since A book that touches on being Guyanese is Shame on Me: An Anatomy of Race and Belonging by Tessa McWatt. She talks about her different features and how people have treated her based on what race they perceive her to be. She has one grandparent that is Indo-Carribean and a great grandmother that was Chinese and then also has Black, Indigenous, Latinx and white ancestry and immigrates to Canada as a kid and to the UK as an adult.

Very fair explanation about your ethnicity. Think you are doing well in your thinking. However racism from Indians is very strong especially when it comes to intermarriage. I understand some of it is religious but integration among the many races in the Caribbean has to be faced as many suicides among young Indians can be traced to falling in love with the wrong race or the wrong Indian.

I definitely learned something-ty! It struck me how fortunate you are to be able to not think about your “Indianness” like you said you did for awhile. As a Black American I feel like we never are able to just be. Being Black is always front and center, for good or for bad. Do the majority communities get along? Do they compete for resources, political advantage and the like?

  • @booksaremysociallife

Theres definitely political tension rooted in our history, but for the most part everyone gets along. It might depend on who you ask though.

In the UK forms when you put ethnicity the only option you have is Afro - Caribbean. Indo - Carribbeans here have to settle for being identified as Asian.
