What is IK and FK?
Фильм және анимация
IK and FK are both rig systems. In this video I demonstrate the difference and when to use each. I go over switching from IK to FK. This applies to all major 3D packages like Maya, Blender, Cinema 4D and others. Getting comfortable with the two systems will help you improve your animation.

Question about switching I haven't found an explanation to yet. If you switch from FK to IK at the point of contact with something, how do you avoid it screwing up the pose, since switching to IK makes the geometry jump back to the IK position.
@alexonstory
Жыл бұрын
Great question! Some new rigs do have IK/FK matching. But you don't need that. I do switch over 1 frame. Then eyeball the position of the hand back to were it was before. If you make the switch on action and over 1 frame no one is going to tell. Hope that helps!

Great explanation, but how do you actually set up the switch?
@alexonstory
3 ай бұрын
Thanks! The switch is an attribute on the armature or in the rig options. I would search rigging tutorials IK/FK switch to get a more clear explanation on that.
What would you use for a long tail?
@alexonstory
Жыл бұрын
FK is easier to set up for a long tail. Animating in FK is also easier to build in offset/overlapping action. Depending on the action, however it is nice to have a tail in IK. As posing becomes much faster. I would say if it's a pony tail or a cats tail I would animate it in FK. If it's a creatures attack tail that needs more performance I might go for IK with the Tail Rig system following the body COG. Hope that helps!
Did you 3D scan yourself or that was 2D just wanna know 😂

Hi! Would you be able to make a tutorial on making a cg double?
@alexonstory
7 ай бұрын
I could animate a CG double, but not build one. That's not easy and requires a good modeler and surfacing artist. Or a 3D scanner. I would look in those place to help you find what your looking for.

Ik for legs and FK for everything else. So what about fixing fingers for retargeted animation?
@alexonstory
5 ай бұрын
Yeah pretty much Ik for legs Fk for feet, yup! I don't work with mo-cap so I don't know. But I think mocap is retargeted to all FK bones, then a rig is placed on top of that, that can then have either IK or Fk.
@Sgirlie755
5 ай бұрын
@@alexonstory What about in general not mocap should fingers have ik or fk bones?

@alexonstory
4 ай бұрын
I took a screen grab of me when I came to a rest and stopped the video. I took that screen grab and created an alpha around me. Saved that and in Blender created a plane with my image texture. I added more definition to the plane and added some control bones to affect the different parts of my body. So essentially I made a paper cut out of myself.
