What is IK and FK?

Фильм және анимация

IK and FK are both rig systems. In this video I demonstrate the difference and when to use each. I go over switching from IK to FK. This applies to all major 3D packages like Maya, Blender, Cinema 4D and others. Getting comfortable with the two systems will help you improve your animation.

    Question about switching I haven't found an explanation to yet. If you switch from FK to IK at the point of contact with something, how do you avoid it screwing up the pose, since switching to IK makes the geometry jump back to the IK position.

  • @alexonstory

    @alexonstory

    Жыл бұрын

    Great question! Some new rigs do have IK/FK matching. But you don't need that. I do switch over 1 frame. Then eyeball the position of the hand back to were it was before. If you make the switch on action and over 1 frame no one is going to tell. Hope that helps!

    What would you use for a long tail?

  • @alexonstory

    @alexonstory

    Жыл бұрын

    FK is easier to set up for a long tail. Animating in FK is also easier to build in offset/overlapping action. Depending on the action, however it is nice to have a tail in IK. As posing becomes much faster. I would say if it's a pony tail or a cats tail I would animate it in FK. If it's a creatures attack tail that needs more performance I might go for IK with the Tail Rig system following the body COG. Hope that helps!
