Honestly southgates strategy is kinda great for major international tournaments: make games ugly so chances for both teams are incredibly limited, and bank on the overwhelming talent of your squad to produce 1 or 2 moments that make the difference

It's not just Southgate though - Teams set up to not let England have space to attack. One reason why the Holland game was more entertaining is because they had ambitions beyond stiffling England and waiting for a break. France didn't become a bad team overnight and their games suffer from the same things

Zealand, you are too young. :) In the best possible way. You don't and can't have and haven't seen or remember the Germany and Italy teams of old that won tournaments or reached finals and semi-finals the England style of now... In German they invented an actual word for it: Turniermannschaft - tourney team. A team that just does enough to go through early stages. Has the confidence, cohesion, never give up attitude and certain quality playing the game and luck to beat strong teams and win or go far. It is not about how you beat Scotland 5-1 in the first game but that you beat the Netherlands or France in the semi-final, etc. It is the consistency and getting results. Although I am very happy and satisfied with the German team this Euros, but it's not that new what England did.

In your defence, Germany were good to watch in all those tournaments. Italy's cattenaccio was one of the worst things to happen to football. I respect their ability to do it, but it makes it so bad to watch. It's probably giving far too much credit to Southgate and England to suggest this style is intentional. I think it's been a case of making it up as we go along. And they might well peak at the perfect time!

It also neglects that it's easier to set yourself up as a lesser side to stifle the opposition and wait for breaks. I remember watching Barca and Bayern toil in tedious games against Chelsea before getting eliminated, and it makes sense. With players like England have you don't want to give them space to do what they can do well. The big problem for me is the preparation time is too short before tournaments like this, if we want the big teams to play like big teams they could do with much more time before it starts to get the side to some degree of coherence, especially teams with lots of young players emerging.

I think we give too much credit to Spain for their triumphs against France, Croatia, and Italy. France hadn't even scored an open play goal before the Spain game, Croatia was solely relying on an almost 40 year old Modric to do the work in the midfield, and Italy has a lack luster attack not aided by the little cohesion between Spaletti ball and the Italy squad. The Germany win is also shaky seeing that handball that wasn't given. Overall, Spain is being given way too much credit over factors that are out of their control. I understand they can only play what's in front of them, but you must determine the quality with all elements in mind.

Would love reece James to crack his injury issues too, him at his best with saka would be mouthwatering. As it stands I think England's best chance is to make this game slow and ugly, let spain have the ball in the middle third and be absolutely clinical with the probably one chance we'll get. Basically, how any team who manages to beat city play (excluding Villa's demolition job, had to sneak that in lol). Ultimately, and this is unusual for me, I'm calm about the final. We're the underdogs and this spanish team are very likeable and will thoroughly deserve the win if they take it. For England, part of me thinks this is the only way we ever win a major tournament, vibes, luck and peaking when it matters, either the luck stays with us and i spend the next week comatose, or we lose to a great team and the future still looks very bright. If england have a fully fit and better balanced squad at the world cup I'd love to play spain again as I think that could be an incredible match up.

But England on the balance of play deserved the win. England were well on top after going behind to a mistake and a wonderful finish. We were beginning to tighten the metaphorical noose. A goal was coming. If anything the penalty slowed England down again slightly. The only things I worry about for England are that Spain are much better are managing games and not letting the opposition have the ball, and that England are quite profligate when we get to the penalty area, notwithstanding insane individual magic moments

England will win at some point. Might as well be Sunday. The premier league just got too strong and the options available are frankly ridiculous. International football has largely descended into random chaos (even when boring). It just feels like now we make narrative out of chaos. Most teams make themselves hard to beat rather than trying to play good football. More and more games go to extra time and pens. More and more could go either way. Feels merit plays far less role and randomness far more. So Italy can win while in a terrible quality spell for national team. Loads of different teams could have won this one. The next world cup, the winner will almost certainly need to navigate a penalty shoot out or two, and get lucky in a couple of games. A Spain win would really be a boost for decent football. But people will still back the cautious approach for it getting England to another final. I just hope more teams move away from it and we get some decent tournaments again. Is it just me? Everyone else loved it? It just seems the lowest quality, few great games, fewer memorable moments and very little individual flair on display. The last euros really wasn't great either. Switzerland beat France on pens to then lose to Spain on pens who lost to Italy on pens who beat England on pens. Amazing scenes.

They don't NOT deserve it. But do they deserve it more than other teams? I mean Germany were just unlucky getting Spain early. That would have been a great final. France tried but again, tough opposition and negative manager. Holland were hard done by with England's penalty. Portugal were hard done by with the law making Ronaldo play every minute. And honestly Slovakia hard done by with holding out so long only to concede to England at the end.

I thought the penalty was harsh but the truth is, if Dumfries had cleared the ball away and kane caught him like that they'd be crying out for a foul and it would be given 99.9% of the time. There just seemed to be an unwritten rule that if a player takes a shot a defender could get immunity for any kind of challenge and VAR appears to have removed that

The penalty was one thing in the semi, that was a debatable decision but at least there's a debate for both sides, the free kick that should've been a corner and was obviously touched by stones been given as a Goal Kick fucking baffled me. And then vvd told the ref that it was a corner and instantly got a yellow for dissent.

@@danielhale2080 Germany vs Switzerland was a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes after Germany equalised late in the game. Sounds familiar? I thought it was pretty clear Germany were the better team against Denmark. They beat them 2.59-1.11 on xG, so even without the penalty, they would’ve had the better chances. One can argue it changed the game plan for both teams, but it doesn’t matter because the penalty was stone cold and anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves They played well vs Spain, if the ref is lenient you are supposed to exploit it. They also should’ve had a penalty against Spain They mainly beat the teams they were expected to beat, unlike England which got through on 4 straight draws. They are also not bang average, that is pure cope.

If Shaw plays at least 45 minutes then England have a punchers chance. But England score on average 1 goal every 95 minutes. I know people think they'll have the edge on penalties if it goes that far but I'm not too sure I think Spain will prove to be good ay pens. I don't see the occasion getting to Spain too much it will be down to how well England defend and if they get a shooting chance around the box, they will fancy their chances against Pickford. Good keeper on one on ones but vulnerable from a pot shot. When teams play Everton, you know you've got a chance from edge of the box.

I have no problem with Southgate. If anything I'd like him to be a little less adventurous and focus slightly more on balance like Deschamps does (Giroud, Kolo Muani over a myriad of talents because they can head) like maintaining an outlet in the front line at the cost of quality like Foden. I don't know why people cry about teams constantly winning or nearly winning. A good shot went in and then Simons dissappeared. Deschamps, Southgate, Ancelotti will keep winning and Nagelsmann can come up with more excuses as to why he's failed in another job.
