6:33 Problem with this that everyone overlooks: the original announcement trailer already has the Unreal Egine 5 logo on it at the end. The game was already in Unreal, and after 6 months of silence, they came back with news we already knew. It irked me then, and it irkes me now because that's still the only thing they have said since then.

considering this game has be in development since 2018 or 2019, was originally called Transformers: Rise!, was originally being developed by a completely different Developer with a completely different budget, in a different art/gameplay style, on a different game engine, and is now being developed by a somewhat experienced studio, different art/gameplay direction, different name, AND a different game engine... this game is in what I like to call DEVELOPMENT HELL

Transformers online games will not work, Reactivate is the 3rd game The other two went horribly and Reactive appears out of luck too. Universe, Online and Reactivate. Mind you two of them actually released though one barely lasted and the other never left China and also barely lasted. Reactivate never even got that far

This game may not see the light of day....they better have damn good reason for this. I dread to hear it has been cancelled...but we cant rule it out.

It upsetting the game a future toyline are in limbo cause the shockwave, knockout, and power glide looked nice and figures of those designs would’ve been great

A developer change, an engine change, quiet delays. This is going to be a great episode of "What Happened?"

The engine switch shows just how early into development the game really was. You don't just completely change engines if you've made a good amount of progress. I can't think of a single game that did that that didn't come out borderline unfinished because they either hadn't gotten anything done or did get a ton done they had to throw out, switched engines, and then seitched to a new engine and rushed it out the door because the project just ate up resources.

This is a really good point

Based on what little knowledge I have about game development, I will say this: a change in engine is no small change and in a lot of ways can basically be like starting over from scratch if you're unable to import assets into it. With this being a game that you described as "free to play", part of me wonders if it was meant to be a live service game, only for someone to take notice of some of the major disasters like Avengers, Babylon Fall and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and decided to pivot hard.

I think Reactivate has not only switched developers but also genres to fit the contemporary market trends. The biggest problem with that is the rapid 'transforming' of trends in the last 4 years that they could be desperately trying to keep up with, explaining why we still have no official screenshots and gameplay demos. The preferred hud and camera placement are likely different between genres. Maps are also vastly different per genre to cater to gameplay. I hypothesize that Hasbro wants Reactivate to fit in a relevant 'guaranteed profit' live-service market, one that is quickly dying since Overwatch fumbled the ball and Suicide Squad failed to pick it back up to say the least. Battle Royale? If you ain't Fortnite, you're doomed from the start. Live service Hero Shooter? Over-saturated market that already spit out several promising games before their first year was up. Helldivers-alike? Too easy to mess up if you intend to monetize it any more malicious than Helldivers and even that game is on thin ice between the players and the corporate bean counters, if even relevant still. At the end of the day a cancellation is still preferable to another Duke Nukem Forever, I think.

A licensed game can't stay in development hell Duke Nukem Forever style- eventually the studio's going to lose the license and the game has to be published or canceled at that point.

Undoubtedly it was canceled a long time ago hung up in limbo and they are simply attempting to pivot and scramble for another developer to build something from scratch with just enough gameplay to feed thirsties, then it will be taken down/servers shut down/single low moq and long forgotten after a year.

obviously i want the game to come out and all the devs labors to be recognized. . . but that said i think high quality toys being released for a game that got one trailer before being canceled would be one of the funniest things to happen irl with the franchise imo.

Methinks that the Suicide Squad missed and instead of killing the Justice League, they killed any and all chances of people wanting to play a $70 live service game. Just look at the response that -non-descript sci-fi shooter number 2079- Concord’s getting. People are sick of live service hero shooters, and Reactivate looked to be another one of those games. Shame, though- those designs are SMOKIN’.

@@mikesdoneitagain4306 here’s the problem with that. The games designed around being live service. Mechanics are put in the gameplay to incentivize spending. You take out the live service without adjusting the gameplay you’re stuck with a really bad video game that no longer has an excuse for being super bad and grindy.

Hasbro really just needs to find someone who can make them a solid Splatoon clone because that’d be a PERFECT formula to use as a basis for a new Transformers game. You have two modes to work with, there’s customizable character and weapon potential, there’s online multiplayer AND a story mode that can be enjoyed without going online, and they could sell it to all ages. Sound like a good idea?

I don't care about the game itself, I just want more of those toys.

It’s a travesty that it’s been almost a decade since we last got a good console/pc Transformers game. It’s not compounded by the absolute embarrassment of Hasbro finally green light such a game only for it to be announced way to early then it’s announcements being quietly deleted.

Between the probable cancelation of this game and EarthSpark, as well as the underperformance of ROTB and uncertainty over One, it seems like the Skybound comics are the only aspect of TF media that is actually going strong right now.

Even if they miraculously managed to put something out for next year, don’t expect anything completely good, i expect bugs and errors at launch and people dropping the game almost immediately and dying fast, feel like canceling the game is the only option and just move onto something else, because if it releases and doesn’t meet people’s expectations, we will be stuck a few extra years until they start another game once reactive fails and some more for their development

It's worth bearing in mind that Splash Damage basically had to switch to UE5 from Unity because Unity dropped a bowling ball on their foot with their terrible TOS change IIRC.

Who would've guessed that a Transformers game of all things would face development hell.....guess that's not a shock with triple A games huh?

This reminds of Guns N’ Roses taking 17 years to release Chinese Democracy and considering that long gap the album did not sell well. Hopefully this is not an indication that the game was lacking in key areas and the developer is too ashamed to admit it. As Transformers fans we deserve a game that ranks among the best.

It all makes sense why JTPrime said the Gamer Edition Reactivate Lifeline was canceled. Can’t have a gamer edition if there’s no game 😂😂

I have the feeling that this was going to be a game as a service, which all are crashing into flames with nothing surviving, Hasbro saw that not even Avengers or DC had a chance and they would just crash and burn as one more, so maybe they are trying to see how to salvage it, if something like that could happen wich such a bad foundation.

Summer Game Fest isn't over until Tuesday so there is still time for them to show something. It might show up tomorrow at Microsoft's showcase.

I was surprised to see Power Rangers get more than transformers at this gaming convention from the past couple of days. I kind of thought it would be the other way around. I’ll take what I can get.

I would say Kill the Justice League is the reason why. Take what you know of Transformers and compare it Kill the Justice League. After people said don't go down the Marvel Avengers route, what Rock Steady do?

I think Hasbro is looking at all the over monetized, live service games crashing and burning on launch and realized that Reactivate is doomed to be the same thing. So they’re either trying to put it off as long as they reasonable can, or trying to remove a lot of monetization and re balance the game so it’ll actually have a chance at making money.

If that leads to a better experience for gameplay (whether it's a Helldivers II sort of game pre-Sony interference or not), I'd be more willing to give Benefit of The Doubt, but 6 years or longer is a LOT of time; not to say long dev times can't bring results - Team Fortress 2 famously took NINE and aside from now-notorious gaffe updates like Meet Your Match or the ongoing #FixTF2/#SaveTF2 cheater-bot crisis, it's still one of the greatest FPS games of all time, as well as PC and "Greatest Of All Time" conversation - but even with the series' rollercoaster track record, it shouldn't need to take this long or be this hard for a game based on Transformers to exist AND also be playable if not good

Wish the Skids wasn't just G1 Skids but inexplicably green. And teamed up with another /sk/ one syllable name. I at least split the difference and call them Screech (green) and Scramble (orange). Also why not make new Ice Cream twins? As in, its a new pair of original twins who become a pink ice cream truck that are also EXPLICITLY not Skids and Mudflap.

I started thinking of Duke Nukem Forever too. 🤣 Live Service with micro-transactions sure doesn't sound appealing though.

Best case, they decided to tie it to TF One since the Quintessons are apparently the villains for both of them, and all the existing visual media was memory holed because of the change from bayformers to the hybrid/BB Movie Cybertron scene art style. I choose not to indulge in worst case speculation, beyond just being cancelled entirely.

I was actually looking forward to potential studio series gamer edition reactivate figures.

Rather than Silksong, I think of StarCraft: Ghost. Blizzard announced StarCraft: Ghost to much hype. Over the next four years, the game would see multiple delays, development would change to a different studio, the GameCube port specifically would be cancelled, and the game would officially be put on "hold". Over the next several years, the game seemed to be pure vaporware, and Blizzard itself seemed confused over whether it was simply on hold or outright cancelled, despite openly admitting the game no longer had a development team.

Additional info on Splash Damage's website still has the trailer viewable and listed. Unfortunately, games that have long development hell end up in situations like this. Also, that 7-year time frame is the best to go by because "Transformers Reactivate" as seen in that teaser was probably not in development for 7 years. Games do change in nature and scope over time, especially under a change in developer. Sometimes I feel like you have to forget that the game got announced and just focus on other things until news comes out.

I bet we'll get new alternators before this comes out.

I don’t like video games with Micro-Transactions, I avoid these type of games.

A lot of games have been rushed threw devolopment to the point where the game isn't even finished when the game is released and they have to do updates just to fix problems that should have been fixed prior to release. My hope is that this company is doing everything they can to make sure they actually have a finished game so they don't have to do that. But honestly I've never seen a game back track an announcment like this that wasn't being cancelled. I have however seen games that never officially announced that they were cancelling the project and some people still believe they're going to happen even though we haven't heard any news on the development of those games in nearly 20 years. I want to be wrong because Reactivate looks amazing from the little we've gotten to see of it but if they're back tracking their announcments for the game I'm not getting my hopes up for a game that was most likely quietly cancelled. I'll give them till December of this year because they said they would make an announcment some time in 2024 but never said when in 2024, but if we make it to 2025 and still have no news on this game it's cancelled. They really should not have released a teaser if they didn't have anything new to reveal. Honestly the game should already be in beta testing by the time that first teaser drops. I've beta tested before and I know they have NDAs and can't share anything that hasn't been officially announced already. They're not even suppose to tell anyone they are beta testing the game, until release then we're free from the NDA agreement. But if those Twitter accounts saying the game was cancelled are Beta testers, they wouldn't register as anyone with ties to the company. Like I didn't work for any of the companies I beta tested for. Alpha Testing is done in house by the development team, Beta Testing is like the first wave of the game being released to the public for free with the understanding that you're playing and unfinished game and can be removed from the game if you break your NDA aggreement. But if the game was cancelled then were would be some Beta testers who would aready be aware of that and would have no reason to stick to the NDA agreement if the company already broke their end of the contract. Honestly I've seen some indy developers who are doing a much better job of keeping people up to date than some large companies are doing. There's a game in development where the developer has been posting updates on their progress here on KZread. They've shown off character models, game play, bug fixes, voice acting, mostly musical numbers cause this game is a musical. They showed so much I thought the game was already out till I realized it was still in development. Vast freaking contrast to see how much info we have about Billy Bust Up before release vs. Transformers Reactivate.

I really hope it's not canned. I think the IP needs a new AAA game or a remaster/re-release of the cybertron games.

The TF: R trailer by Hasbro Pulse is now unlisted too. ☹😨

I’ve been saying for a while that this is riddled with red flags for anyone familiar with the modern gaming landscape. The decision to move to a new engine was a huge red alert in my mind because engines games are ran on are pretty essential pieces to the games playability. So then we are told about even more delays on when we would hear news about it, I think they said 2025 was when we’d hear news if I’m not mistaken. So with all of these things in mind, I’m kind of just accepting that it’s not happening lmao

Part of me wants to believe that the game will release but another part is saying better hurry up and grab those figures before an announcement and the eBay prices skyrocket.

The fact that this game is going to be a live service already makes me want it to get canceled. The gaming community is sick and tired of these kinds of games. And considering the troubled development it’s been getting it tells me we aren’t getting a Helldivers 2 kind of game. We’re getting a Suicide Squad kind of game.

Ive watched enough, What happened? To know a mid production engine change is never a good thing. Usually mandated from above and sets the whole project back. All the previous work is now wasted money and hours as the team scrambles to save what assets it can with a new and unfamiliar system.

My best guess is it's a combination of Covid and Hasbro not wanting Reactivate to compete with One. I'd be willing to bet we'll see something (trailer or otherwise) late this year/early next year once One has run its course and a release middle of next year.

Annoyingly, Splash Damage have prior precedent for doing this kind of thing. Anyone remember the screw-up that was Brink? If you don't, I don't blame you. Well, I was caught up in one of their marketing stunts for that game, and I can confirm they went weirdly quiet for a very, VERY long time after amping up the hype for that game something fierce. Not only that, but they are also one of the studios that habitually makes claims about their games that... never actually winds up in the game. It's never quite as bad as Peter Molyneux's ridiculous claims, but it's always pretty bad.

Are those Transformers fans that aren't also gamers, this actually happens in the gaming industry all the time. Especially with the smaller companies. They'll have a hype man, usually an executive, that'll promise the world. The developers, the actual people who make the game, were then saved we don't have the time or resources to deliver all of that. So then the game is delayed to have it scaled back and refocus. This game should have been a free-to-play mobile game. But the hype man got to somebody at Hasbro and they were convinced to sink time and money into a toy line, full scale video game and who knows what other projects they had in the works

they may have run into serious issues and may need to start over from scratch or hasbro didn't like they saw and told them to restart

My hope is that it’s just delayed, severely granted, and are preparing to re-launch and re-announce. Summer game fest was probably too close for them to show anything if the game’s still going

It all starts and ends with the fact that Hasbro is cheap. My guess is it has to do with frame rates and crashes and glitches and net code. I would give alot for devastation 2 or a forged to fight console remaster. Looks like Hasbro is doubting the product in some way or another. Perhaps doubting the budget and expense. Look at how Hasbro has treated other IP like power rangers and. Ninja turtles and he man. They are super quick to pull the plug

Some looked great while others like Optimus energon weapons looked like PS3 graphics. Yes I am aware that ilm was busy with other projects but money talks.

With how delayed the toyline is from the game they might reissue the current 4 figures if/when the game comes out. Thinking about it if it comes out late 2025 the 4 figures who are big name characters like Optimus and bumblebee that came out over a year ago it’s gonna be hard for fans to get those figures so a reissue with new figures added on could make sense. Now that depends if the game ever does come out cause it’s development patterns don’t look good, what’s worse is if the game is a 5-6/10 people are gonna be annoyed that we waited years for this game only for it to be a dud

Honestly if I can't make my own Transformer it's not worth playing. We should be past the point of playing with characters that already exist. There's only so much fun you can have playing Optimus Prime. They need a MMO transformers game.

It's a ligma live service game with no content, I would rather have it be delayed so its filled with high quality good content.

If I remember registering for transformers online and I still get email updates from that earlier registration. Honestly I have no interest in it anymore at this point and expect a Duke Nukem forever situation at this point

Exactly! This smells like creative interference. They must have forced Splash Damage to announce it way too prematurely. Seriously, if Hasbro butts out of the development process & let Splash Damage do what they think is best for Reactivate before fully making an announcement, none of this would have happened.
