The beauty of this Ted Lecture is that the fellow presenting a very complex idea, does so in very straight forward and simplify's the idea. This man has the gift for presenting new information in a way that many can understand. Many professors speak in way's that information is presented in a complex manner.

Fantastic presentation...

It's as 2D as something can ever be. It has the height of one atom. Since charge is carried by the electron the single atom thickness is only going to allow that charge to move in 2 dimensions But it is a 3D object.

That view of graphene is dependent on the atoms-are-marbles view of physics. In fact, quantum mechanics treats atoms as distributions of excited wave functions above a local ground state. So a more field-theory type viewpoint is that atoms, by virtue of being excitations in an underlying potential field, lose their geometric sense of "length, breadth, height". Thus, you might say atomic particles in some sense are dimensionally indefinite, and the dimensions we experience are macro scale effects of many such atoms coming together, not unlike temperature, wetness, or friction. So if the scientific community finds it fit to view graphene as a 2-dimensional structure, I'll let 'em have it. I understand how trivial concepts like length, breadth, and height can mess with ones sense of how the quantum world behaves. To end, the classical viewpoint would correctly contend that graphene is 3-Dimensional, but then again, classical physics is inadequate for our description of this 21st century wonder material. I only have a limited understanding of quantum field potential theory, so my explanation of dimensions may be a little off, but I mean well and wish you the best as you continue to explore the fascinating world of carbon's graphene. The material Graphene is really fantastic and should be researched in scientific manner. Scientific method is based four principles 1)Observation 2)Measurement 3)Experimentation and 4)Good thinking. The number 4 is most important because the present problems in World are mainly because of ignoring or overlooking impacts on nature and environment but giving importance to Money oney. The excessive mining of sand for construction purpose is burning issue and research in developing suitable material using Graphene will be a great help. Eliminating plastic will be also great achievement.

I think it's because microscopically it is made of millions and millions of individual flakes of graphene all piled on top of each other. The individual flakes are quite strong but the composite structure is weak.

No. This is underlying carbon tech re: higher elements like silver, titanium, silicon or copper. Gateways will need to be developed to interface w/ current tech and materials.

The faster you can discharge a battery, the more usable current you can draw at any time via the fast discharge, so you can run greater loads. In short it makes for a more usable battery.

Seems to me that time is of the essence in getting graphene into markets and commerce asap. Americans are quickly losing the technology advantage they once enjoyed at height of auto-piston engine era. We need those graphene engines, motors, batteries, solar panels, Pre-fabed homes, hospitals ASAP x ASAP Squared! What's the hold up? Capitalist political ideology; that's: "what's the hold up"!
