Graphene science | Mikael Fogelström | TEDxGöteborg

Graphene. These just one-atom thick carbon structures is without doubt the most buzzed-about material in the world of science today. Kostya Novoselov and André Geim was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize for their work on the matter and right now research teams all over the world are competing to turn knowledge into applications. The possibilities are endless. Mikael Fogelström, Professor at Chalmers, coordinates two large national research projects on graphene science. "We are still in the beginning", he says.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

He's speaking to an audience in another langage than is own. It's enough to feel stress. He didn't say anything dangerous or extraordinary. The conference was in 2014... He's still Head of department in microtechnology and nanoscience, in Chalmers University. So I guess he's fine.

The number of people commenting on this guys nervousness and his accent concerns me. People throw a lot of mental barriers at receiving complex information. I remember in college, our algebra prof was from India. She had a horribly thick accent, all the other students complained about her, even attacked her personally. Funny thing was, this prof had a sister who was a electrical engineering prof. They grew up together and had the same accent, and were teaching equally difficult subjects, but the EE prof was profoundly gorgeous! No one complained about her. I had no problems in algebra, and could understand her fine, because I wanted the info.

We still have too much of an ego-stroke towards human superiority for that to be true imo. However, I think The Matrix is a warning. We are already plugged into the system, voluntarily, through our phones and the internet. Look up Maslow's pyramid. We need to stop trying to spend all our lives at the top. Stop trying to automate and outsource the lower levels, & stop making fun of those who do. It is a rickety structure, that makes us completely dependent on the system/grid/state.

@@nosheeple2751 The Spanish story is not correct. The Spanish university in the study, University of Almería, said results were inconclusive (no graphene) and it was an anonymous vial delivered by a messenger service that could have come from anywhere. The analysis is an official study from the University of Almería. However, the university has “unequivocally” distanced itself from the analysis that claims to have found graphene oxide in a vial of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The university also made it clear it doesn’t endorse the analysis.

When she was little, my sister had repeated waking nightmares about people turning "hateful, zombie-like," all suddenly losing their minds together, crashing their cars and planes into each other on purpose, en masse. That was in the late 90s. To put it bluntly, this is why I disagree with Elon Musk's idea that we should all chip ourselves in and become the mass-organism, to counter the likely possibility of AI taking us over. "Becoming the AI to stop the AI," as Elon puts it, will end in only one of two possibilities: a mass democide of any who refuse to participate, and slavery for the rest... Or an accident in deployment that results in mass formation and violence.

He or she must be taught that it is simple to understand and so very important to master. Graphene holds the ability to make perfect artificial humanoids. Even to the point of allowing someone with a terrible disease or injury to inhabit a new perfect body. Include the ability to travel to distant planets and be instantly able to cultivate an Eden or Elysium on any extreme environment. Beyond that the ability to create a planet in empty space. In short it is the human mind that must be prioritized for cultivation.

It was truly a momentous occasion for those who realise the full importance of what Shou-En Zhu did. He is to be credited with this break through. However, it remains to be seen whether graphene (specifically single-layer, although I’m annoyed that I have to specify single layer now) can achieve the incredible things that have been claimed. I also have concerns about the safety aspects of working with graphene. What happens at the ends- benzene rings? Invisible flakes floating around - it can cut into your skin and into your blood. I'm still young, I wish they could make this a reality in my time still.. I love this type of things, unfortunately I'm studying design so I can't really go as close to the manufacturing of that particular material as I want now because I lack the knowledge in chemistry, but it's part of my projects to come up with innovative products (which is how I found this). I kinda want to stop what I'm doing and get in there with these guys to try and mass produce it. There's so much potential.

The last thing that I saw in mass production of graphene, was made by accident in an explosion (don't remember what gasses were) and all the carbon “dust” around the cylinder used to contain the explosion was graphene, but, I'm pretty sure it is really contaminated, maybe can be used as a precursor. If you are an industrial designer maybe you could help in the making of mass production. See the best technique of production, and take it to an industrial level.

Yes, I'm in my last year of university studying industrial design. I know about that experiment. They just used oxygen and ethylene(?) I believe. They didn't want to make graphene, that just sort of happened by accident, but unfortunately it's nowhere near as good as it's meant to be and it's all in big chunks, but it's a way of doing it and I know they continued to research it (though I haven't heard anything more about that). Right now I'm working on all sorts of things, but I'm mostly dedicated to 3D printing and tbf since the first year of school (when we learned to use 3D software) I've been more inclined to modeling and working digitally and ultimately I'm thinking of working on videogames and making models for games or animations or movies etc.. which is a little off track from what I'm learning but it's what I ended up liking the most. I still have this in mind though and I remember reading about it in like 2008. I never forgot about this material, but I never saw anything about it online after that either... unless you actually search for it there just seems to be no progress or maybe it's harder to produce than we think. Maybe we just lack the tecknology...

This is a wicked talk, even though he seemed quite nervous, all the points he made are very clear and so interesting and made my imagination go nuts. If graphene needs to be made 1 atom thick and it can be any width or length, I'm just thinking, why not try making a sort of fibre optic cable out of it with strands of graphene like they do with fibre optic internet and phone cables, would that sort of thing work, or is it too brittle to be woven? And if it's completely transparent, and they can make a sheet of it big enough for windows, you could have it go across the inside of the windscreen of a car, lorry or aeroplane etc, or any windows to have it power the electrics / auxilaries inside. It could be used for holograms or HUD(Head Up Displays) in anything, helmets of motorbike riders, in windows to show the time and weather or anything like that. The desalination thing is brilliant, about half the Planet's oceans is salt water so Countries near salt water could use it for drinking or veggie and wholegrain agriculture, it would completely abolish the thirst issue in many Countries in Africa where they have huge drought problems. Amazing.

By making many nano-sized electronic "particles" from graphene that can interlock and unlock at will, you get the liquid robot in the movie TERMINATOR 2. Each would have its own capacitor power supply and sensors and control circuits. It would also be as invulnerable. Kind of mind-boggling. Alternatively, you have the Martian spaceship from the 1970 movie 5 MILLION YEARS TO EARTH, by mixing graphene with ultra-hard diamond-like carbon materials.
