Meet graphene | Catharina Paukner | TEDxDanubia

Everyone is talking about graphene, the new super‐material of the future, which will bring huge changes - proves the pioneer scientist, who dares to re‐think our everyday life and create something completely new. In her highly entertaining speech, Catharina explains that the areas of application of the world’s strongest material are limitless, ranging from power supply, aerospace, automotive and construction to healthcare and the design of everyday electronics, preventing collapses of buildings to a new design in heating our homes.
Catharina is the co‐founder and Chief Scientist of Cambridge Nanosystems Ltd., a company that produces graphene in industrial quantities without compromising on quality. Labelled in the UK media as "The First Lady of Graphene” and one of the eight business leaders to watch in 2015, she is “an amazing scientist with a passion for her work that is infectious”. She received her MSc in Chemistry from the Karl Franzens University in Graz and developed her PhD research in Materials Science at the University of Cambridge. She has been awarded Fellowship of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) in recognition of her role in the design of new nanomaterial manufacturing systems.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    What would happen if they spray Ed it in the sky? As part of the climate control chemical. This is a better reason to wear a mask. Wait you could soak in it and bullets would bounce off? Right!?

    Another comment says this, and I want to ask too - if the very definition of graphene is "a mono-atomic layer of carbon" and its properties derive from that, then the moment you shred it into powder, it would cease to be that (a sheet of carbon atoms), wouldn't it? And all its properties that arise from being a single large sheet should disappear, shouldn't they? Properties such as tensile strength in the plane of the atoms, transparency, conductivity, etc. all of which rely on the orderly arrangement in a single plane. Milled into powder, the single macroscopic plane is no more and tiny shards of it remain, each in themselves microscopically-sized planes haphazardly oriented. How is it special anymore? How is it still graphene? Multiple stacked layers of graphene become graphite. Why isn't graphite as strong or stronger than a single layer? At least the layers of graphene in a block of graphite are arranged parallel to one another, reinforcing the structure, not randomizing it. Some light on this would be highly appreciated. Obviously not understanding something.

    Tread very carefully with Graphene, if there are so many good traits there will also be equally bad traits. I like the idea of structure sensors and one she did not mention enhancing battery technology but again tread carefully.

    I'm not sure about painting graphene ink conducting 240V directly onto your walls, you'd still need a non-conductive layer on top and a safe plug connector at the end! Imagine your kids touching it!

  • @artytomparis
    @artytomparis7 жыл бұрын

    But graphene still doesn't exist in any manner other than in tiny quantities and cannot be 'painted' with a paint brush without ceasing to be graphene. Graphene is a single layer of graphite. Sloppy application methods such as mixing it into concrete result in it no longer being graphene. If you are going to be that excited, then get excited about your pencil.
