Honestly, I am all here for calling these luxury brands out for their bs! Holding these luxury brands accountable for the lack of quality, but raising prices is very much needed! Exposing the horrible working conditions is also a must! Luxury is supposed to be exceptional craftsmanship, not what they‘ve been trying to sell us post-2020.

Wanting something substantial and exceptionally crafted for a 2000$ bag is not the same as buying something for 1$ cause it has the luxury name tag. You know you cannot expect a lot from a 1$ bag.

@@violakarl6900 it doesn`t mean that the quality is worsening. Slave labour is widely known in Italy for the `high`fashion industry. Chanel , Prada , Bottega Veneta and more were already in 2009 documented in a TV doc. I wrote everything just here in a comment, if you are interested.

I think it is also about a general price increase in every sector that makes some productions considerably more expensive while these margins for production costs are usually very limited. That combined with necessity for growth is a deadly combination which will kill some of these brands, I guess. Nevertheless, an absolutely shameful development, which we honestly could know was going on, and which is probably been a thing for a while ( I think well before this economic crisis).

I have two pre-loved *preluxz* that people left the stickers on, and when you remove them, the hardware looks different than the hardware right next to it that the sticker didn’t touch. It’s not because the other has scratches, the sticky stuff affected the finish.

I'm Italian and honestly if people were expecting with "made in Italy" to have Italian masters and grandmas working on their bags, t shirts, jeans, sneakers and flip flops they delusional. Most of the mass Luxus companies in Tuscany and Milan use Chinese underpaid workers in Italy, and french brands use the same Italian "chinese factories". Real "made in Italy" and high quality materials is only to find in Couture, shoes (depends on brands), and high quite luxury brands. Of course it depends on products and there exceptions for some Mainstream brands putting more efforts in their mass production items like Bottega and few others. Also sunglasses quality which Luxottica dominate the world market makes huge profits on way lower prod. costs.

Not even that… A lot of Italian brands send things to Serbian factories that do almost all the work, except for the final touches that are done in Italy so that the “made in Italy” tag can be stitched to them. I have some really nice Gucci pieces that are not “officially” Gucci because of the tag 😅

Yes, it was known for a long time...just not in America 😅....

The stepfather of a friend I had was was the manager of the dior beauty factory in France. He said it costs 3€ to make dior sauvage perfume that’s sold for over a hundred. Same goes to all the makeup and beauty and face products. The highest production cost was around 8€ for a face moisturizer.

I remember when the Rana Plaza collapsed in Bangladesh, brands like Gucci, Prada and even Versace which is my most favourite brand, were found in the ruins and call me naïve but it shocked me because the products are always labelled as made in Italy. I guess the difference between the luxury brands and the fast fashion brands, the former are just better at hiding their dirty work than the latter. PS RIP the victims of the Rana Plaza collapse.

Yes, Rana Plaza should have created legislative protections and yet, here we are still. But where exactly did this info come from. The RP list only included the following: Benetton Zara The Children's Place El Corte Inglés Joe Fresh Mango Matalan Primark Walmart ... I am not sure if either Prada or Gucci makes items in Bangladesh.

@@monie2193 It’s very easy to claim something without any evidence. They could have been doing fakes for all that we know. For what I know, as someone who worked in the industry, no Kering or LVMH brand does anything in India or Bangladesh; and Kering hardly produce anything in Asia, beside some Balenciaga shoes in China and some denim in Japan.

People (anti-luxury enthusiasts) called us idiots for spending so much money on these items saying that it was the same shit as other little brands. TURNS OUT they were right. Infact even contemporary brands probably have better ethics. I’m so appalled. Definitely stepped back after the Loro Piana situation with them not paying Peruvian farmers and now this. Disgusting really.

Perception is everything, I remember saving up for my first LV and some coworkers automatically thought it was fake because I was a young black girl. At that point I really stopped caring what people's opinions were, people will always have their opinions based on how you look. After this I shopped in *preluxz* . If you drive a Bentley and get out of the car with a fake Hermès, no one will question you.

what better time to support small design brands that still protect craftmanship and artisanal etiquette.

Your closet is simple a dream! Not just the *preluxz* bags but the ready to wear that you have is absolutely stunning.

This is the prime reason why fakes have become so good. There isn't any artisans doing the work, jist random temporary workers. This won't stop them, they'll just move it. It's about greed, thats why the prices going up and quality is down

People should read "Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster" by Dana Thomas. It describes how Bernard Arnault bought brands that were once small, local family businesses, run by artisans with a devotion to craft, and made them into global marketing machines. E.g, Louis Vuitton; Dior; Loewe. Of course, the same is true of the brands owned by other conglomerates. The prices are commensurate with the size of the marketing machine; not any improvements in quality. And her book was published way back in 2007!

Totally agree with you Cassie, luxury fashion is supposed to be produced by craftsmen and craftswomen who are valued for their skills by being paid and treated fairly. I hope all luxury consumers care how their purchases are being made, and for the safety and livelihood of the workers!

I think luxury brands have been cutting corners all along but managed to avoid scrutiny based solely on their "good name." Exactly like you said, with their prices, you expect them to be above fast fashion cost cutting and they played us as fools. But they are clearly EXACTLY like fast fashion. They've just have century longevity of their brand name to hide behind. With the consumer complaints in the last few years over reduction of quality, you'd think they'd have taken it as a warning to clean up their act but alas, greed and accountability to shareholders (growth) reign supreme. And if we, as luxury consumers knowing it's fast fashion quality at perpetually increased prices, keep handing out money to them, then we ARE the fools they treat us as.

Paying premium for thoughtfully, ethically, meticulously made products is one thing, paying premium for items churned out in the way described in this report is foolish. I know we pay for the marketing/packaging etc, but also the idea that skilled artisans are making these products. I have no doubt that this is the tip of the iceberg, and many more brands will be exposed. It’s easy to understand the quality issues of other top brands if you assume they are making bags in these types of conditions. Great video!

My lecturers at fashion school had an opportunity to meet with the leather suppliers of Hermès, specifically crocodile leather. They shared that for one crocodile hide, it costs USD300-500. Say it takes 2 crocodiles to make one Birkin/Kelly, depending on size, the material cost alone is far less than what the product is actually selling for. One would think it is the pay of Hermès artisans that makes up the bulk of the price, considering how much the brand highlights the human and craft aspect. But it turns out that they make far less, but I do not have the actual numbers for this. Point being that luxury houses have long created this impression of luxury being more ethical and sustainable, when in fact, the production scale of popular commercial products like jumpers, t-shirts, shoes and bags are no different from those of fast fashion brands.

In addition, the methods in which these crocodiles are farmed are causing much concern. Factories in Australia keep the animals in tiny cages to protect the precious skin. Luxury has long ceased to be luxury as we think it is.

Meanwhile, the ones that are truly paying the price for “ luxury” are the animals. There is no sense of luxury about wearing animal skin when we all know that these poor creatures live in horrible conditions, and in most cases are being skinned alive. I never equated carrying a crocodile, lizard or ostrich skin bag as luxury. It is actually nauseating. In reality, the luxury industry is gruesome.

The fact they are born and have that short life in a cage alone, just for their skin. It made me cry! I know we are not treating cows well either, right now I am using this recession to rethink my shopping and buy less!

When the Pandemic started, there was a mysterious hotspot of infections and it was pinpointed to Chinese workers that have literally been shipped in every few months to work at luxury fashion sweatshops in Italy. These workers lived inside the sweatshops and were replaced once their time was done and the next load of fresh and fast workers got shipped in again.

That we are being "ripped off" with high margins is a known fact, we justify it with quality, the prestige and how the bags are made, trained artisans, the fantasy that all the bags we buy are made by happy italians or french under fair conditions. It's a disgrace.

i don’t think anybody is surprised lol- disappointed yes, surprised no. Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the houses under lvmh operate under similar conditions. They also love to go on about how their products are handmade to explain away any faults and defects, but we all know by now that most of the process is by machine and at most, just hand assembled. These houses just love to gaslight and lie lie lieeeeee, always blaming regular folks for fast-fashion pollution, but they’re all hypocrites

The point of luxury- the point of paying a high price- is to compensate the little old Italian man who's been making leather bags for 80 years a fair wage for his knowledge and skills.. not to compensate a machine. I think a lot of people have just assumed luxury items were made the way you described. By little Italian men or whatever. Luxury brands are notoriously hush hush of course. But really, if they ARE ethically made and made by Italians (or French, or whoever) it would be I incredibly easy to find out. People know where their friends and family work. Everyone is on social media. Most companies have an anonymous Reddit page where the employees bitch about their bosses. Is there a subreddit of luxury factory employees complaining that someone stole their brei out of the break room fridge? No, because the products are actually made by immigrants brought over from southeast Asian who have their passports taken from them and are forced to live in bunkhouses. Allegedly.

Next generation? This is literally happening right now. Every brand pumps out a huge amount of product. I worked with a man who worked in luxury fashion supply chain and he said the amount of product waste was incomprehensible as they had to move on to the new seasons so quickly it all just got chucked out what hadn’t been sold

it's well-known and true for ALL labels: 10 years ago they filmed swatshops in italy for Bottega Veneta, then it was Dolce and Gabbana only making the last stiches in Italy to claim Made in Italy for clothes manufactured in Asia. The Armani, now Dior. We know it's a scam. that's offensive but What shocks me even more is that, with all that, leather and hardware keeps going down to ridiculous levels. I'm only buying vintage. p.s. I'm italian, ciao from Venice

Luxury now (and for quite some time- especially under Arnault) is an idea being marketed to consumers - as long as customers are willing to buy into the idea of the luxury/history/feeling they will continue to cut costs and increase their margins. Period. They will continue to exploit people for profit because the bottom line is all that matters to a corporation.

This is why I feel no guilt in going to the Shanghai street markets for these bags.

There are a lot of changes going on right now here in Italy and the use of the term “made in Italy” is being changed and regulated since we’ve seen the birth of the “ministry of made in Italy”, I don’t know if the parameters will be changed, but I hope so. There’s art in the made in Italy, as there is in made in France, or any label that celebrates the creation of people who put their talents and time and care to make those pieces; by wandering around Italian cities, you may find little shops and “botteghe”, where you can see THE made in Italy. So, no. I cannot accept the insult to different cultures and traditions and workers’ effort, as much as it is unacceptable to exploit workers.

Honestly, I think people who love luxury and buy it (I include myself in this group!) need to stop saying that we buy luxury bc of the "quality," bc obviously it's just as a mass produced as Shein. Let's all just be honest and admit we buy it for the design and the brand name. This isn't to say that the designs aren't stunning, because they are; we like them because they're beautiful, and they are finished a lot more nicely than some other brands, but that's where the differences end. In all other respects, these are mass produced items being made under harsh, exploitative conditions, and we need to stop pretending they aren't.

Chanel is no better. 10k for a bag? Come on. And then the bag has defects? I just stick to buying vintage chanel at a price I'm comfortable with and other brands I love.

And all of that weeks before my planned birthday luxury shopping spree... Goodbye Chanel, goodbye Dior, goodbye... all of them? Since I am in love with Dior since forever, this makes me really sick to my stomach.

Maybe preloved if you can stomach it? Dior's resale value has never been the tops. The few items I have I got in 2020, but I don't see myself letting them go (none are in the oblique or toile). I don't know if I should even buy perfume from the brand if this is how they treat their manufacturing employees

But I love the iconic designs from Dior and will definitely look out for good offers.

Dior caught red handed.... Is there a possibility the other top fashion house with same or similar conditions? they just yet been "expose". This is horrifying. To think that these poor people were living’s under these conditions while we are paying thousands of euros for a bag, it’s nauseating. All businesses nowadays have departments for auditing suppliers, so no explanation is acceptable, either they knew and didn’t care or… tbh I don’t believe any other explanation, when you are billed a 50€ for an item.

This is a very important discussion for many reasons, one of them being the fact that, in these last few years, we are seeing luxury brands (other segments as well) emphasize that their product is now being made in an European country or in the USA, as if that would not only equal "more quality", but also a more sustainable and fair approach to manufacture (compared to a product made in China or in other Asian countries). As Western consumers, I suppose we are meant to believe that labor exploitation is a "third world reality", which is not only absurd, but dangerously naif. Also, people have been more receptive to price increases due to these (often subtle) marketing techniques that totally "greenlight" us. We should be aware that Dior and Armani are not alone, most of the luxury brands have questionable practices. More often than not, we are paying for branding, not quality... let alone ethics. Dior is owned LVMH . If they have these sweatshops made their bags I think they would also did it for other brands that they owned as welll such as Fendi and LV. Also it is very suspicious that there are now more Chanel bags made in Italy than France in the boutiques now. We should also investigate Chanel practices as well because 5-10 thousands bags for something that cost a couple of hundred dollars need to be stopped.

It’s basically expensive FAST FASHION

Something had always told me that the Dior Tote Bag seemed cheaply constructed or made. I might just be me, but I am not a fan of something that is considered "luxury " but looks very cheap. It might look nice, but I'd rather get something made sustainable rather than fast. " luxury" fashion( if this is alleged)

Would love to hear you get more into the ethics of fashion and various brands in the future. I know that it's become one of the things I focus on most when looking to purchase from a new brand, and I think lots of people are starting to do the same (provided they are financially able to) ❤

It is probably happening with the majority of the brands. Most of them will clean up knowing what Dior is going through. None us know what company is clean.

They can’t clean up. For decades their business model, profit margin and shareholder bonuses have been based on these extreme margins. And just like with billionaires, you don’t get that sort of money playing by the rules. It should be impossible for these companies to be making these margins and grow these profits if they’re playing by the rules.

If you use slave labor on an item where the margin is pretty small, that’s bad. But if you use it on an item where the margin is enormous, that’s disgusting. The expectation when you buy costly things is that they use the best materials and trained craftsmen who are paid for their ability to do the job. There is no luxury in owning something from a company that considers its employees nothing more than a cheap commodity. We hold our nose when we buy fast fashion but if we have to do the same when buying QUALITY, that means we need to face the fact that the system is broken. It is nothing more than b.s. and begs the question: How is a Dior bag different from a dupe if the conditions are the same? My motto is “don’t be greedy.” How much profit is enough?

After spending a month researching for a new work tote bag I had settled on getting a medium book tote. But when I finally went to Dior and saw it in person I was so disappointed in the quality. It was just a canvas bag with no lining or pockets and doesn't even hold its shape very well. It looks like if I bought something really expensive from Dior this is the bag it would come in. 53 Euros sounds about right. It really does look and feel like just a cheap bag. I'm still hoping to get a leather Dior bag some day but never the book tote.

The book tote is just even more greed move - it is super fast and super super cheap to produce...no zippers no lining... super fast to put together... I would expect the production cost is not more than 10 dollars for this one...

Hello Cassie! Thanks for another top notch video! ❤I’m not surprised to hear this. I suspect this has been going on for years by all of the design houses. They are grabbing at greed left and right! I really hate to see it.

Someone also said it’s the saddle belt bag from the men’s section; not sure. My mind went to “yeah LVMH and their shareholder values”. But then Chanel, whilst private and not beholden to forever ending growth, seems beleaguered the same way just not to the degree Dior seems to be. So exactly what brand can we trust won’t simply chase the bottom line to the end? Also, I hope as consumers we hound them if they come out with plausible deniability because at this point they are 5% product and 95% logistics with their crazy release schedules. Did they really not know or did they just not want to find out? It really bothers me.

It should not come as a surprise to anyone, the leather goods industry is a tricky thing. We had an Italian leather goods business here in our town almost 30 years, thier products were sold to Nordstroms,Macys,and many more upscale stores they all said made in Italy when they were made right here in Ohio. If an item has 2 types of work done on it you can say made in . .......... I do know they sent the crok to be done in Italy and back here and lizard. Dior has excellent quality, no excuse for had how they are made,but I 've seen a few of these and it's not nice. You would be shocked by the brands involved, I think you will start hearing of the other brands. So far this is alleged practice. I think you know it doesn't take thousands of dollars to make a bag or shoes.❤❤❤ Thanks for sharing! ,

I recently saw a video by Tanner Leatherstein where he went to a city in Italy, that the main economy is making leather goods. These people are artisans and train for years to perfect their craft. It's crazy that this city is struggling but you have a major luxury brand charging outrageous prices for sweatshop products. It also leads me to believe that these so called super fakes are probably not so fake but just sold behind the luxury brands back.

These brands aren’t going to pay a premium for skilled artisans to make their products. If anything the bags they would produce would likely be better quality.

Not even behind their backs. They’ll be from the same factory. They’ll know. They just won’t care. The cost of fakes is factored into the cost of the named brands specifically so they know they aren’t losing money to them. That’s just a basic business requirement.

Disappointing and infuriating!! My mom mostly worked as a garment worker in LA. She made lot of swimsuits. I grew up wearing Calvin Klein, J Crew swimwear etc, 3+ pieces every summer. Then in college I walked into my first JCrew store and was livid when I found out what they sell for vs what my mom got paid. She once worked at a factory for 2 months and never got paid. Her best employer was American Apparel who had their own controversy with the execs and treatment of models but her pay was the best relatively speaking, they took stretching breaks and even had massage therapist to come and work on. Neck, shoulders and hands every once in a while. I was planning on picking up my first Dior this year and simply can’t now. This is just too in your face for me. I can’t knowingly spend my money here now. guessing this was asubcontractor in an effort to wall themselves off inhumane conditions and I’m sure other companies just haven’t been caught yet. 💔

I love the honesty you put forth in your videos. The truth is that most brands are shady in ways we never hear about. A few years ago there was a building in Bangladesh that completely collapsed and they found that it was a sweat shop for a big brand. Not sure what brand but they investigated it and said exactly what the Italian government is allegedly saying about Dior. Not a good look for brands and it make consumers feel bad for being blind to it.

Very important topic. Some luxury buyers have awareness, knowledge is power, knowledge and wisdom makes us the most savvy consumers. We should not be exploited by luxury brands and be discerning in our purchases. I agree with everything you said.

Those Dior Book Totes were having glue issues and discoloration at one point. Forgot which influencer was talking about it.😊 Honestly who is managing the Dior, Bernard's oldest daughter. 🙄 Who knows what decision-making up her sleeves.

Sorry to disappoint you but Vivienne Westwood is not ethical at all. I used to work for a company making costume jewellery for her. All workers were underpaid immigrants and this was more than 20 years ago. This has been going on for ages but somehow ignored. Glad that finally someone is exposing all these brands.

Hi Cassie! I definitely am disappointed with the Dior news as the point of Luxury is quality of the product for the price that you pay. It will be interesting to see if they will have another price increase with the labor practices allegations.

Doing my medical clerkship this year and just finished a 38 hour day. Have no idea what’s going on, but your videos are always a treat and nice reprieve from medicine! Although, it is terrible that luxury brands are exploiting their workers

Thanks for this informative video. I watched a pre pandemic video produced by LV where they went through the manufacturing process of the canvas never-full. They admitted in their own video that it is only costs 115euros to make. Not sure if they have removed that video from circulation. Such a huge disappointment!

lol, I just assumed that this is always the case. All luxury brands charge absurd prices and target middle & upper middle class people who want to feel fabulously rich. Unless the material is from some exotic rare species that can only be found halfway up the Himalayas or something....the prices don't make sense. I don't own a SINGLE luxury item and my purse is an 8-year-old Costco find. I'm just here for Cassie's fabulous personality.

Girl that’s why I only buy leather bags. I would never ever pay thousands for non leather. For example when I see people buy those nylon Prada bags for $2000+ all I want to say is, you do realize that’s plastic right? Same with those Dior totes. They’re literally CLOTH bags and people are paying $3000 bc it says Dior. I find it stupid personally. It doesn’t matter what brands it is, if a bag is cloth or plastic it literally costs them pennies on the dollar to make.

This kind of similar situation was documented in the mirror of high-end fashion by DW Documentary. it was available in youtube couple years ago and i cant find it anymore, basically gucci, maxmara was mentioned there too.

I remember watching a documentary here on KZread, years ago, about migrant workers who got injured at tanneries in Italy. Allegedly the leather was for high end luxery brands who have runway shows. The conditions were disgusting, the safety standards were in the bin, and they got away with it because reporting their bosses would get them deported. It's all giving shein right now honestly.

I loved this video of yours. I love that as a "luxury fashion addict" as you call yourself you are also appalled at these practices.
