Rise And DOWNFALL Of Michael Kors: From Self-Made Billionaire To “Unoriginal And Overexposed”

Ойын-сауық

What happens when a luxury fashion giant, once revered, slips into the ordinary world of mediocrity? Michael Kors, a brand that once reigned supreme in the world of accessible luxury, was admired for its chic designs and celebrity endorsements. Yet, in a stunning reversal of fortune, Michael Kors faced a public backlash so severe that it sparked debates about the very essence of luxury.
Critics disparaged Michael Kors as “the tackiest man alive,” and the brand became a target for ridicule, with its products derided as fit only for "duty-free shops at the airport."

He's very rich but has lost his reputation. Michael Kors is now considered tacky. Something the lower classes buy thinking they're hip. His story reminds me of Pierre Cardin who was highly regarded in the 60's and then cheapened his brand by licensing his name. He became extremely wealthy as a result but his name was forever tarnished.

@YoBoyMarcus I guess it depends on what your priorities are. Not to mention these days people's mindset is being changed regarding luxury and the concept of cheap. Things aren't the same as they used to be. All sorts of people still wear his clothes. The concept of cheap people etc. Is now seen as elitist and negative...not really something to aspire to.

I noted in watching this "downfall" story that the griping was never about the quality or design of the clothing once he branched out to more mainstream retailers. It was about perceived exclusivity and unattainable-ness of his products. In my mind if more people can afford his products and improve their appearance what's wrong with that? It's when the snobs and elitists feel what they wear can be purchased by a greater number of people, they're no longer interested. So that's what we've come to these days? Our values are messed up.

Some of you sound out of touch there was a time when people would avoid cheapness and such but society has changed and people aren't in awe of the rich elite psychopaths anymore...in fact many in the so called upper crust unbeknownst to many are wearing fake hermes and such delights. And poorer people aren't hero worshipping the upper-class like they used to...social media has destroyed the superstar and the royals...it is a new day and michael kors will survive over many and their so called prestige and good name, as that's all some of those have. The brand catching the most heat in the fash8on world right is Chanel with their high pricing and declining quality. MK mainly git hurt due to the copy industry not really because of brand rep.

If you sold Calvin Klein and you had didn't have authorization he would chase you down to the ends of the Earth and sue you to the point that you would be living out of the trunk of your car. If you have the audacity to sell counterfeit goods he also if you have the audacity to sell counterfeit goods he have the federal government come after them as well. He was notorious for going after Costco who was selling some Calvin Klein jeans 1 time. Not only did he sue Costco. It was to find out how they got hold of the denim in the first place!!. They were probably stolen off the back of a truck most likely. In any event he went after & prosecuted every single person involved. Costco was forced to make a public apology. That's how ruthless you have to be in protecting your brand and your merchandise. Unfortunately the fashion world is full of cheap counterfeit knockoff goods..

He should rebrand his luxury line with a new label that's fresh, confident, and distant from his past errors, but also acknowledging of the fact that mistakes were made. He could call it "Of Kors", which not only sounds like "of course," but also "off course" onto a new path where "Of Kors" or OK replaces MK. Because he'll be OK. Food for thought. :)

What is "luxury" anyway these days? $50 to make a Dior purse - a brand which is like all other "luxury" brands these days now ...compromising quality, and customer service and having no issue making people line up like sheep outside of their stores....Why would anyone with any common sense take these brands such seriously anymore anyway? As for MK where he's at now? Well... I love Michael Kors. Excellent quality and customer service from my exposure to in-store and online purchases and services. I like being able to purchase a creative, beautiful and well-made handbag, dress or shoes without having to take out a second mortgage. I appreciate the accessibility. To him, I say thank you! We forget that historically luxury brands catered to the extreme minority groups with massive wealth. Let them continue ...if they want to pay 10G for a $50 bag that's their business. Also I didn't hear Versace cry their eyes out when MK offered them the deal?

Personally don’t believe MK ever had an original idea of his own. Too often he seemed to copy other designers especially with his bags, Gucci, Prada and LV. Just not original and incredibly smitten with himself. I remember one Project Runway episode where the up and coming designers went to MK’s studio. He was showing them pics of a woman that wore African style clothing and told them that was the inspiration for his new line and what it was going to be based on. I bought a friend of mine a $1,200 MK’s bag. One of the two handles broke twice and had to be sent back to NY to be repaired. The store said they would not repair if it happened a third time. This all happened in a matter of 5 weeks including time in NY. Last time I ever bought her a MK’s bag because this one was garbage. Seems MK, this is now your day to be out.

I’ve read a few comments about the quality of the brand. But, I have seen the quality of quite a few “luxury “ brands go down over the last 20 years. The only difference is that they don’t sell their goods in outlets, so they get to keep their reputations and claims of exclusivity.

The leather is trash. I remember years ago I saved for a MK saffiano leather tote bag. I finally got it and treated it like gold- the bottom corners wore off and the straps fell apart so fast!! It had never been set on a floor! I had been using it for maybe a year? That’s when I realized it was probably made in China with very cheap quality and a brand slapped on it but sold for top dollar at Macy’s. I was done. Never again. Quality leather goods if cared for should last a lifetime!

I exclusively use and purchase MK handbags, as I now have 10, and also own accessories and a few clothing pieces, so this retired school teacher loves his brand. With that being said, reducing his footprint in outlet stores and moving back to the "luxury market only" will still have the average person shopping to locate and purchase a MK item regardless.

I love Michael Kors and I love Versace both. I think they are both very good at designing clothes that do exactly what this video explained - they create usable clothing that is a very good value in terms of wearability that is also superior in the area of aesthetically pleasing. I love that Michael Kors provides an entire lifestyle for his customers, that includes a wide range of related products. I think Michael Kors is very innovative and I am especially happy with his shoe designs, and I really hope he doesn't cancel some of them. He is definitely a leader. I really love Michael Kors' more luxury clothing as well. I really don't think that the luxury clothing line should suffer because he also offers a line that isn't exclusively for celebrities or extremely wealthy people. There's a clear difference between the clothing in each line, and it is obvious that the luxury clothing should definitely be much more expensive than the clothing available in department stores. I honestly can not afford most of the things Versace has for sale, but I feel like this clothing line is especially beautiful. I love the fabrics, the artwork, and the interesting styles. Almost every item created for the Versace brand, no matter what it happens to be, is an elaborate and heart-grabbing work of art, and is made incredibly beautiful by the extremely talented designer. There really are a lot of similarities between the two brands, and I think it's ridiculous for people to assume that Michael Kors would ruin the Versace brand. Michael Kors would sell that brand like nobody's business. However, I personally do feel that Donatella, or whoever she employs, happens to be an elite and especially talented person who is really and truly far better than the vast majority of people in the world when it comes to designing clothing for that brand. Michael Kors could sell it, I'm sure, and probably suggest some very good ideas that Donatella could turn into masterpieces like she already does, but I do feel that it would be a shame for her to go into retirement. Of course, whether she wants to do that is her business, LOL, and Michael Kors really could do a good job I'm sure, but I'm just saying, she's just SO GOOD.

I still like Kors and have pieces i bought years ago that have come back into style and look new. And accusing him of copying other brands is ridiculous, even the top luxe brands end up copying each other. I call it fashion espionage😅 But to reclaim more of prestige, MK needs to find better faces for ths brand. He always picks fashion models that are not too known. Look at Coach, when they switched from Selena Gomez to JLo a few years ago, more people wanted to buy it because she's known as a very luxe lover of high fashion (hermes, Dior etc) but literally the woman started wearing less birkins and dior totes and till this day is always sneaking in a coach bag in her daily life or events, then switches back to her birkins and dior faves and other luxe brands and then sneaks a good amount of coach bags in her outings. But MK needs to work on more quality design and good faces for the brand, meaning celebs that will commit to wearing his merch, amongst their outings and promotional tours.

I never knew who Michael Kors was until I watched Project Runway, and with each new season, his popularity as a designer continued to grow and expand. He has his collections, lifestyle and outlet designs. I have also seen his line in Macy's, which I have purchased a few things, and I recently bought a liquid cotton shirt from his line which retailed at $50 for which it's now just $28, which suits me fine. His line is also sold at Marshall's and TJ Max, and I have seen it available at Ross. I know as a designer you want to be a worldwide phenomenon, globally. I think he's definitely oversaturated the market, which is now accessible to so many people. He's lost that unique exclusivity, the mystique. I have seen a lot of very unfashionable people carry his handbags. Most people who love and are fans of fashion like there boundaries between them and those.

He never had to do "clothes for the masses" - there are many brands before his that took this same path - DVF, Halston, Calvin Klein. So all the data was there. If I had to guess, I would say he choose it because it makes so much more money! There are plenty of consumer reports that show 75% of all luxury brand sales DO NOT come from the rich & famous, but from the middle class who is willing to go into massive credit card debt to look rich. The truly rich don't wear clothes w/ logos all over them in real life. They only ever wear them because they get the clothes for free & are then paid to wear them out to have their photo taken so regular folks will see it & run to buy the item like little sheep - so gross. An "MK" on your handbag today says "Marshall's Klearance"
