What is God?

There are many people in the world that believe in "God." And yet, there are more than a few definitions. As Christians, what do we mean when we say this?

I think whenever we make affirmative statements about God, we run into problems. God transcends our definitions and understandings and we can only approach the topic by saying what God is not. For example- God is definitely not a bearded man in the Sky!

So wise and so young! As a 65 year youngster who accepted Christ as my Savior at 35 and bowed down to Him as my Lord at 50, my return to Mother Church 11 years ago was a long and painful journey, however like the woman at the feet of Jesus, I have finally broken open my alabaster jar and daily attend Mass to thank Him for His grace and mercy in my life. I attend because I love Him not because someone says I should go. I celebrate the Eucharist eagerly because I am thankful He loved me so much He stretched out His arms on a cross at Calvary to die for me, a worthless sinner and embrace me as His precious child. Daily I struggle to see others as He sees them, precious and loved and this has changed my life. He loved me first and I am so grateful. May God continue to shower His blessings on your lifesaving ministry. Father Casey you are a beacon of hope to many. Continue to allow the Holy Spirit to direct you!

When asked 'Why did God create everything?' one child answered 'Because God was lonely'. God is Love, unmeasurable Love revealed perfectly in Jesus Christ. His Holy Spirit has been stirring that Love in the hearts of believers who came before us and those believers amongst us today, and will stir that same Love in the hearts of those believers who have yet to come into this world. God is Love who pours His grace on all humans and His creation. God is Love, our Home.

Wonderful again Father Casey. Your closing was the recommendation I have been wanting to express. Know your faith so you can share the real faith. I read so many comments online from so many people professing to be Catholics and their expressions reveal such a rudimentary knowledge of our faith. It is as if a great majority received instruction enough to receive First Communion and that is where it stopped. Even so many well meaning Catechists transmit a very limited and sometimes very personal interpretation of Catholic teaching. My humble opinion is that this approach is doing more harm than good. A transformation is needed.

Usually when an educator provides an explanation or definition, you come away with the feeling you understand the topic better than you did previously. Casey Cole, however, explains God by adding in extra confusion. He provides no definition of God, just adds in the completely nonsensical notion of the Trinity and provides a few supposed characteristics of the components of this three-yet-one entity. At the same time, he decries illogical views on God without even a hint of irony.

In physics, energy is defined by relationships. Kinetic energy comes from movement, but movement relative to the observer (or some other object). Heat energy comes from the movement of atoms around one another, nuclear energy from the changing of quarks in close relation to one another. It's possible to convert energy into things, but also into information, other forms of relationships. All the universe is relationships. The whole universe is created in God's image.

The Trinity is Hinted at in the old testament. Gensis 1:2 "the Spirit of God hovered over the water.." or When God says in Genesis 1:26, "Let US make man in OUR image and likeness..." many have interpreted the plural to be a "royal" way of speaking about oneself, others have interpreted the plural to mean that God was speaking to the angels when he was creating man, those interpretations are possibly true, but I believe that when God sent His Son Jesus, that we discover their ultimate meaning in the Trinity. So God didn't change, rather he gradually revealed Himself until Jesus came.

God is Love. God made man so that “Man” could show his Love of God and love Man has for others. Man is flaw but God is perfect. In that perfection God nourishes Man and sustains to live in this world. Today the hardest thing is to remember that this world is not everything. St Paul is correct. Life is a contest. Life is a race. The prize is to unite for eternity, in love, with Jesus, in heaven where we will be joined again with our loved ones from our life on earth. You can talk in gentle tones, and use big words, but let me clearly spell out what you actually believe. A perfect all powerful all loving thing created a universe with billions of galaxies, each with billions of stars, each with tens of planets, just so it could care if Mary masterbates on this one small planet around an average sized star in an average galaxy? That's not all, we're not done yet. This god then creates 2 (well possibly 3 humans, it appears Lilith was Adams first wife, not Eve). Then puts the one thing that would ruin all of creation right next to them. Tells them not to touch it, but seeing as they don't know right from wrong, they have know way to discern this. Then it creates a creature that it knows will trick them into touching this forbidden thing. Then it blames them for doing what it knew they were going to do, and thus punishes his own creation for all time. These first two people populate the Earth (even though there are somehow cities already), but the only way to populate the Earth is, well we leave that to your imagination. This thing then hates it's own creation so much it decides to kill everything in it except one small family. (This family then has to repopulated the Earth again, and again I'll let you figure out how that's done (ask Lot's daughters, if you're not sure)). After the Earth is repopulated, it still hated it's own creation, so the only way this god thing can quell it's rage is to sacrifice itself to itself (as all the animal sacrifices that it enjoyed over the millennium were simply not enough). This sacrifice (which really isn't any kind of a sacrifice) would then offer a handful of people the chance to have an eternity of blissfully worshipping it. But thus condemning any sensible person, or any person that never heard of it, or heard a different version of it to an eternity of torture. Now mind you not only do you have to be convinced of it, but you have to be convinced of the exact right version of it, or your whole life is a failure, and you're going to have your flesh melted off repeatedly for all of time and beyond. And seeing how there are more sects of christianity than there are sentences in the bible, and that the Abrahamic god created 3 religions all with multiple sects good luck finding the right one, and that's even if the Abrahamic god is even the right god of all the gods humans have imagined. This is what YOU believe. This is what you have devoted your life to. You get one life, use it for good. Use it for love, and compassion. Fall in love with a person. Rescue stray dogs and cats. Make the world a better place. You're a young man, don't seclude yourself from the world. The world is a complicated and scary place, but it needs good people doing good things, not good people hiding away.

It is good to have these discussions but oh man, what confusion is out there ! The more I delve into it, the more I am convinced that nobody has an earthly clue what is going on. On the face of it, it looks like everything happened by accident, that it's just a mere chance that we somehow evolved into the walking, talking creatures we are today, with all of the intricate, internal wiring necessary to our current state. Then I look at the animals and the birds, and their incredible natural instincts. This time of year the swallows gather, preparing for their long migration back to Africa from their summer homes here in Ireland. Evolution, they say ... It's pretty amazing. Did it really all start off with an explosion in an outdoor science laboratory ? Anyhow, to get back to the main theme, even if we haven't a clue, I have always liked the idea that God is Love, and where there is love, there is God.

"There is the son - the one spoken, who is and fulfills the law" The son IS the law. Seriously, what can that even mean? If the law can be a person, should I introduce him to my brother, the novel and my uncle, the geometry proof? How can the son fulfill the law? By obeying it? Isn't that for us to do? We were just told that the father enforces the law, so the fulfilling is not enforcement. Maybe it has no meaning, but I admit it sounds good. Fulfil combines full and fill, two words with strong positive vibes. The value of these statements is mystical poetry if you like that sort of thing.

With all of are knowledge of Good and Evil Humans still can't explain God but we know that this Being exciest. That's called Faith , You can't prove it but cant disprove it. If we say God is just a Creator and rip his qualities like loving, enforcing the law, providing wisdom etc., then he is no better than a flying sphagetti monster. Everyone has their own opinion about God like he is eager to punish, he doesn't care, I am god, he is useful delusion to he cares only about my group, he is a genie, he is my source of income to he is Love, he is the hope for mankind etc., That's why defining God properly is needed. Whatever opinion we have it doesn't change God's nature but it tremendously changes our nature. He is eager to forgive the repentant sinners and have a relationship with him. Believing in God isn't enough we should be perfect like Him.

I appreciate the attempt, but I'm afraid that you describe the three Persons not only in relation to each other, but in their relation to creation: Father/Creator, Son/Redeemer, Spirit/Sanctifier. That is modalism. See CCC 258: 'The whole divine economy is the common work of the three divine persons. For as the Trinity has only one and the same natures so too does it have only one and the same operation: "The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are not three principles of creation but one principle." However, each divine person performs the common work according to his unique personal property. Thus the Church confesses, following the New Testament, "one God and Father from whom all things are, and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom all things are, and one Holy Spirit in whom all things are".' I think just about every homily I've heard on Trinity Sunday expresses modalism, so it's not uncommon.

A person's god is what they think can benefit them or what they spend most of their energy on. My ego can be my god. My child or wife can be my god. My boss may be my god. Atheists have a god, they are worshipping their opinion, or their ego. People have many gods at the same time despite what they proclaim with their mouth. This is technically what paganism is. Christians have deified Jesus and their god has become Paul and the church fathers. The Jews have made the opinion of the rabbis in the Talmud their god. The muslims have made Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali their god. Or the Shia have made Ali and the Imams their god. Or muslims have made Bukhari and the like their god. Monotheism rejects all of these inventions. There is a Creator who creates, maintains and controls reality. Monotheism is a radical concept to the minds of most people. For a true monotheist, God is doing everything. Only God can affect your life. He controls the hearts and minds of everyone. He controls every atom. He controls the brain synapses of Satan, Jesus, the angels the disbeliever and the believer according to their deepest inclination, their "heart". "God" is the word for this monotheistic god in english, even though the monotheistic concept is violated by most who use it. Allah is the word for this monotheistic god in Arabic, even though the concept is violated by most who use it. Elah is the word for this monotheistic god in Aramaic, and Allah is simply a dialect of this borrowed word from the more ancient version, "Elah". There are a lot of Aramaic expressions that influence the other Semitic languages, as it is a more ancient language. Hashem is a word that refers to this God that doesn't actually mean god, but God Almighty is who they are referring to, but most who use this are violating the monotheist concept unknowingly. It is the concept in the minds of the person that matters, and not the name so much. God sends scripture and following it alone is how to be a monotheist. There are several real scriptures, but the oldest ones have more human injected doctrines. Here is what God says in his latest and last scripture, the Quran,{Say, "Call Him God, or call Him Most Gracious; whichever name you use, to Him belongs the best names."} [17:110]. This is not my opinion. This is the opinion given to us by one of God's messengers. God sends information to us through men who show proof of authorization by showing us a miracle or something miraculous, like Moses, Jesus or Muhammad. We received a messenger from God for our time in the 1980's to correct many of the distorted concepts about God and religion out there. His name was Dr. Rashad Khalifa. He was God's Messenger of the Covenant, prophesied in Malachi 3 and Quran 3:81. He provided miraculous proof, mathematical proof, of his messengership. All of the information inspired through him from God is available online through keywords such as "submitter" or "God alone" or simply reading his translation of the Quran: Quran, The Final Testament by Dr. Rashad Khalifa. Peace.
