What is ESR? How is it done? What does it tell us? | what is esr test in telugu | what is esr blood test | esr test in telugu | esr test procedure | esr test normal range | health video | health tips | Dr GPV Subbaiah | Spine surgeon
Hello everyone! In today's video, we will be discussing ESR, or erythrocyte sedimentation rate. This is a test commonly used in medicine to assess the amount of inflammation present in the body. In this video, we will explore what ESR is, how it is measured, and why it is important. So, let's get started!
[What is ESR?]
ESR is a blood test that measures the rate at which red blood cells settle to the bottom of a test tube. This process is also known as sedimentation. Red blood cells, or erythrocytes, are the most abundant cells in our blood and they carry oxygen to different parts of our body. When there is inflammation in the body, certain proteins called acute phase reactants are released into the bloodstream. These proteins cause the red blood cells to clump together, making them heavier and settle at a faster rate.
[How is ESR Measured?]
The ESR test is simple and involves taking a sample of blood from a vein in your arm. The sample is then placed in a thin, vertical tube and left to settle for one hour. The distance the red blood cells have fallen is then measured in millimeters and this is the ESR result, commonly reported in mm/hour.
[Why is ESR important?]
ESR is not a diagnostic test, but rather an indicator of possible disease or inflammation in the body. Higher ESR levels can indicate the presence of an infection, an autoimmune disorder, or a chronic inflammatory condition. An ESR test is often used as a screening tool to help diagnose conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or certain types of cancer. It can also be used to monitor the progress of a treatment or to check for relapses in chronic conditions.
[Interpreting ESR Results]
It's important to note that ESR levels can also vary depending on age, gender, and certain medications. An elevated ESR does not always mean a person has a medical condition, but it is a sign that further investigation may be needed. A normal ESR result does not rule out the possibility of an underlying condition either. It's important to discuss your results with your doctor and take into consideration your overall health and medical history.
[Conclusion]
So, there you have it - a brief overview of what ESR is and why it is important. This simple blood test can provide valuable information about our health and help guide our doctors in making a proper diagnosis. If you have any concerns or questions about your ESR levels, make sure to consult your healthcare provider. Thank you for watching and I'll see you in my next video. Bye!
