The purpose originally was to protect parties that believed they were unlikely to get a fair trial in another state. For example, plaintiffs from State A would be concerned that there would be too much bias against them if they filed a case in State B against someone from State B. A federal court, with a judge appointed by the federal government, seemed more likely to be fair to parties from out of state. There is some dispute now about whether diversity jurisdiction is still necessary.
